Florida Governor Charlie Crist and former House Speaker Marco Rubio faced off in their first national debate Sunday in their battle for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate.
Crist harshly criticized Rubio for having earned over $300,000 as a lobbyist while serving in the state legislature. Crist also slammed Rubio’s ethical lapses concerning a $600,000 political fund and for having double-billed airline travel for the state and the Republican Party.
For his part, Rubio slammed Crist for working with the Obama administration and said Crist had failed to offer any major policy proposals. Rubio offered a controversial plan of his own, proposing to simultaneously raise the retirement age and cut Social Security benefits.
Crist flatly rejected Rubio’s proposal to slash Social Security and raise the retirement age.
