Almost immediately after it was announced that Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens was retiring, speculation about his replacement began. Names were floated, the balance of the court was debated, and the question was asked, should Obama go left, go right, or aim for the center? But amid all of this speculation, one important aspect of a potential nominee's qualifications has been ignored. Until now:
An openly gay nominee to the vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court might be acceptable, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said Monday. [...]
"I'd have to think about that," he said. "As long as it doesn't interfere with their job, it's not a particular issue."
Cornyn nails it. Just imagine ... if it can be determined that being gay doesn't interfere with a person's listening and reasoning skills, then the last discrimination barrier on our nation's highest court will fall. And think of the domino effect that could have throughout our entire society. No longer would heterosexuals have to question their ability to do their job based on who they choose to love.
What a relief.
