During the Vietnam War, Connecticut senatorial candidate Richard Blumenthal never got any further east than Washington D.C. while serving in the Marine Reserves, so yesterday's report on a 2008 speech where he said:
We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam ...
... quite naturally created a media firestorm.
Today Blumenthal fought back, holding a press conference to say that it was simply a case of "a few misplaced words," said during the hundreds of times he talked about his service. But will it fly?
At this point Blumenthal still has the support of the DSCC:
DSCC Chairman Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) said Tuesday Democrats “will continue to support” embattled candidate Richard Blumenthal in his bid to become the next senator from Connecticut.
... and the man he hopes to replace:
Retiring Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT), who Blumenthal hopes to succeed, strongly reiterated his support for Blumenthal, telling me the new allegations change nothing.
Presumably that steadfast support has a lot to do with Blumenthal's strong poll numbers, but will they hold up? And are there other "misplaced words" in Blumenthal's past that will come back to haunt him?
