Apparently, Sue Lowden won't even do her own television interviews anymore (which is perhaps a good idea given her last encounter with the TV camera). Greg Sargent:
Sue Lowden’s campaign manager has now said that all Americans already have access to health care — because if you get shot in the chest, you can simply head over to the emergency room.
This will make it easier for Dems to argue that there’s a serious ideological reality underlying all the joking about Lowden’s proposal, since disavowed, to bring down health care costs with barter: Lowden doesn’t have any real plan to fix our health care mess.
Robert Uithoven, Lowden’s campaign chief, made the claim on Nevada columnist Jon Ralston’s TV show:
Unfortunately for Lowden, chickening out on the TV interview doesn't seem to have done her any good. Her campaign manager's health care plan (just go to the ER if you get shot in the chest) doesn't seem any more realistic than Lowden's Chickens-for-Checkups idea.
Setting aside the silliness of Uithoven's argument, the optics of him doing the interview instead of his boss are just awful. It's extremely unusual for the Senate campaign managers to do interviews like this, especially in small states like Nevada, and it virtually never happens with challengers. It's a fairly strong signal that the Lowden campaign has a fundamental problem: a very bad candidate.
