The Maryland Republicans had a mixed year in 2002. While they lost 2 congressional districts, they gained the governership. You might have figured the Republicans would have used the governor office to try to regain the lost congressional ground. Instead, so far, the highest profile Republicans in the running are competitors against the 2 remaining Republican incumbents. (I say, so far, because the Maryland filing deadline is still almost a month away).
In Maryland 1st a conservative state senator, Richard Colburn is challenging moderate Republican Wayne Gilchrest.
In Maryland 6th, Scott Rolle, the Frederick County State's Attorney (aka County Prosecutor or Prosecuting Attorney) is challenging Roscoe Bartlett. His main issue so far seems to be Bartlett's opposition to the death penalty.
If either incumbent were to lose, which is probably unlikely, Democrats may have quality candidates to compete in the general, although the Republican upstarts would still be the favorites in both. In the first district, Jim Mathias, the Ocean City mayor may run. And in Maryland 6, Jennifer Dougherty, the mayor of the city of Frederick might run.
