First, let me say thank you to Markos, and the entire Daily Kos community, for welcoming me earlier today. It is more than an honor to be working with Daily Kos--it is a dream come true.
For those of you who do not know me, I spent the last three years running OpenLeft.com, which will continue on in my absence. Before then, I spent three years writing at MyDD.com. But, I do have deep roots in the Daily Kos community. I have been lurking here since August of 2002, when I found Daily Kos in a Google search for information about the midterm elections. I am proud to say that my user ID is a very low 123, and that I had the first diary promoted to the front page (although I am embarrassed by that article now). A few weeks later, I invented the tip jar, sort of, as a mean to get myself trusted user status. (click here to read ElistJohn’s comment where he figured out what I was doing).
I am not here to tell you what to do. This action email list will be informed by your creativity and insight. I hope to supplement your existing ideas and efforts, and allow them to make a much bigger impact on the national political environment. Also, now that I live in D.C., I will do my best to represent you and your interests on the ground here. Bluntly, I am here to work for you.
Now, to answer some of your questions from the announcement thread earlier today:
- Yes, you can unsubscribe from the list. Click here to do so. You will also be given the option to unsubscribe at the bottom of every email, and at the top of the first email.
- Our privacy policy is here. It has also been added to our sign-up page, and will be included on all action pages We have been assured both by our email service provider, Salsa, and by the essential fundraising service Act Blue, that none of the emails we are using run afoul of anti-spam laws. We would not have included any emails that violated such laws.
- We did not purchase any of the emails on the list. If you receive email, it will be either because you registered a user account, or because you donated to a Daily Kos operated Act Blue page.
- Signing up to the list will not result in your signing up to any other email lists, unless the sign-up form explicitly states otherwise. None of our current signup forms explicitly state otherwise.
- There will be a pop-up box on Daily Kos now, asking you to sign up for our campaigns. Right now, it is set to appear only once per cookie, every 999 days. So, unless you have cookies disabled, or unless you reset your cookies, it will only appear once on every device that you use to access Daily Kos.
- Only first names are required on the sign up so that people can have the option of receiving email addressed to their Daily Kos user name. Seemed only appropriate for the Daily Kos email list.
- If you are overseas, just type in whatever postal code you have in the "zip code" box.
- When you sign up, use your email address, not someone else’s.
- While I have done a lot of political consulting in the past, during my time at Daily Kos I will only be working for Daily Kos.
- If you are following me on twitter, I am no longer @openleft. I am now @thisbowers. But please keep following @openleft
If you have any more comments, I will jump into the comments and do my best to answer them. Also, keep in mind that there will be bugs as we get off the ground, so please be both forgiving and willing to point them out as you see them. This email list is only going to work with your feedback, suggestions and participation. So please, sign up for the list, and fire away in the comments. I am here to listen.
