Over the years The White House has released a video series titled, "Inside the White House:.." It is an educational and fun look at things that most people don't get to see. Each video is only 4 or 5 minutes long and worth taking some time to watch.
The Situation Room The Situation Room was created by President Kennedy after the Bay of Pigs, he felt that the information that he had been getting wasn't reliable. All Department of Defense agencies were required by Presidential order to feed live information to the Situation Room.
Over the years Hollywood has portrayed the Situation Room as being a high tech operation but reality is until it was renovated in 2007 it was very low tech. They used CRT monitors and communications would break down regularly. Also over the years Hollywood has given people the impression that the Situation Room is under ground. It is not, it's on the first floor and some offices have windows.
During renovation they gutted the first floor down to the dirt and expanded the Situation Room to 5000 square feet.
The Marine Sentries There are only 4 Marine's who work as sentries for the White House, they rotate every 30 minutes.
Letters to the White House President Obama reads 10 letters from the public a day.
Bees! Did you know there are about 70,000 bees living on the South Lawn? Neither did I.
The Cabinet Did you know that cabinet meetings are the only time the Secret Service allows all of the heads of government to be in the same place at the same time?
The Kitchen Garden
The White House has an email newsletter called "Daily Snapshot" that I'd encourage everyone to subscribe to if you haven't already. Each day you get a photo or video along with a summary of the days events. It was through this email that I discovered the Inside the White House series. You can subscribe here.
