So tomorrow is the big day -- the day GOP is finally unveiling it's "Pledge to America," a 20-page document explaining how Republicans would govern...and they're doing it in front of a hardware store, no less. Among their top pledges according to a draft released Wednesday afternoon:
Read The Bill: We will insure that bills are debated and discussed int he public square by publishing the text online for at least three days before coming up for a vote in the House of Representatives.
Sounds like an easy enough pledge for Republicans to keep, right? It's basically a 72-hour waiting period. Not rocket science. But there's a problem. Less than 24 hours before officially pledging to institute that 72-hour waiting period, House GOP leadership still hadn't given a final version to their membership to read.
Republicans plan to unveil the Pledge to America — a much more comprehensive agenda than the 1994 Contract with America — at a hardware store in Sterling, Va. on Thursday. POLITICO reporters viewed a draft of the 20-plus page manifesto Wednesday afternoon.
Republicans are holding a conference meeting late Wednesday to discuss and approve a final version of the agenda.
So even before formally offering their pledge, Republicans had already broken the spirit of a pledge that they are placing at the center of their campaign. Which I suppose makes it appropriate that GOPers are holding their event at a hardware store -- they're going to need some heavy duty machinery to put their credibility back together again.
