Democrat Glen Brower is running strong and spirited campaign for State Assembly in the 21st district, representing South Milwaukee and Oak Creek.
He understands the problems we all face, from rising property taxes, rising gas prices, and ever more expensive health insurance, Glen knows that more of the same just won't do. We need honest and responsible leadership to address the problems that can no longer be ignored.
The Wisconsin Assembly Democratic Campaign Committee has noted that there are only 8 seats (out of 99) without a Democratic incumbent or challenger. Republicans control the house 52-47 right now. However, this point could use some more analysis. Some of these seats are very strongly Republican statewide, but some are quite even between the parties or even slightly Democratic, and there is no excuse for not having a candidate.
The eight districts, and the biggest city located in them, are the 6th (Shawano), 23rd (Mequon), 27th (Sheboygan Falls), 33rd (Hartland), 58th (West Bend), 59th (Cedar Grove), 67th (Chippewa Falls), and 99th (Hartford). In particular, Russ Feingold and Jim Doyle did well in the 23rd and 67th.
Below, a couple lines of analysis for each district (mostly statewide election results broken down by district.) I will be using the 2004 Senate and Presidential races and the 2006 Governor race to provide more information on the partisan breakdown.
Disclosure: I've been a volunteer with the Perez campaign since April 2007.
We won. Manuel Perez won the Democratic nomination for the 80th Assembly District in California. He won thanks to grassroots organizing, an insightful and professional grasp of core issues, and the powerful support of his brothers and sisters across the broad spectrum of the labor movement. But essentially because he's a mensch, and he's in this for us. His rally speech at 2pm:
Video shot by Rafael Aguilera, director at The Verde Group, who has worked with Manuel, and came down to be here for the campaign. Crossposted from Calitics. Updated on Sun., June 8th to trim a bit, title was From Rally to Victory Speech - Election Day.
The political balance of the Anchorage Assembly swung from right to left Tuesday night as voters looked poised to elect four new members, according to early results.
Over 40,000 Californians die every year from tobacco smoking, nearly one-fifth of all of the deaths that occur in the state. That's 17 times the California's 2,500 annual homicides and ten times the 4,100 Californians who will die of breast cancer this year. Despite decreases in smoking rates, tobacco use remains the state's leading public health emergency.
What, therefore, can you say about an elected official who takes campaign contributions from the industry that needs, for its survival, that that public health emergency continue unabated and thus needs a favorable regulatory climate in Sacramento?
A new report from the American Lung Association of California details the bribes donations that Big Tobacco gave to legislators and candidates during 2005-6.
In August 2006 California Supreme Court decision in Copley Press v. Superior Court, issued a ruling that has effectively shutdown public proceedings for civilian review of police oversight. This ruling has effectively prevented the public from learning about police officers who have been disciplined because of misconduct. Hearings and records that previously were public are now closed. We are not talking about allegations of police misconduct, we are talking about sustained findings that have found officers guilty of actual misconduct.
This is the third part of my interview with Rob Haswell, CA Assembly candidate from the 4th district which stretches from the Sacramento suburbs to Lake Tahoe, for my local blog Turn Tahoe Blue.
Here is the second part of the interview Rob Haswell, Democratic candidate for Assembly District 4, has granted my local blog Turn Tahoe Blue. (You can read part I at Turn Tahoe Blue or my diary here at Daily Kos.)
In this part he talks about Charlie Brown, the Doolittle political machine and the importance of national issues and the disillusionment with Bush for this election.
In the coming days I would like to focus on a great campaign which has so far mostly been ignored by the mainstream media, like so many other worthy "down-ticket" campaigns.
Rob Haswell is running for a traditionally Republican seat. Though, like so many seats this year no seat held by Republicans seems all that save, especially since this California Assembly district's current representative is retiring making this an open seat.
California's 4th Assemlby District stretches from the suburbs of Sacramento up to Lake Tahoe. It encompasses most of Placer and El Dorado counties, Alpine County, and a small part of Sacramento County.
Rob has been so kind to grant Turn Tahoe Blue an interview and it will be published in four parts in the coming days. Here's the first part:
Many people, especially in the media, think that modern campaigns means modern technology. And nothing more. I believe that is not the case and there are two campaigns in the Tahoe area that prove my point.
Whenever I go to knock on someone's door, I walk up to it realizing that most likely the voter will tell me that they are concerned about the lack of affordable health care. Health care is, by far, the number one issue that voters want to talk about in my district. One hardcore Republican told me that "our healthcare system is fine - everybody gets taken care of in the end." Apparently he hasn't been watching the news or reading the papers for a few decades. According to the National Coalition on Health Care:
I am writing to ask for your help. I know you are a very busy man and flooded with E-mail from every type of person imaginable. I try not take up much of your time. I am afraid though you are the only one left I can contact who will listen and give me direction that I so desperately need. I will outline what I have come up with, what has been created, what the goal is, and what I need your help with.
Calling all Americans! Calling all Americans! George W. Bush STOP SPYING ON ME!
Nationwide July 4th we need to assemble on the state capitals and show our grievances of this illegal activity that this Bush regime continues to order against the American citizens. We must not let them intimidate us any longer! It is time that we fight back as a unifying force under a unifying cause. THE CONSTITUTION!
In California and all around the country, Tuesday June 6 is primary day, where progressive candidates need your vote to continue the important process of reforming our party and our nation.
Damon Connolly is running for the open California State Assembly 6th District seat (Marin and south Sonoma counties). Damon is a strong advocate for progressive values, and asks for your vote in Tuesday's primary.

I wrote just a little bit last night about the B.R.E.A.D. action assembly I attended the other day at Congregation Tifereth Israel. Mainly, I shared my overall impressions--the size of the crowd, and the "packed like sardines" aspect of the experience. If you aren't familiar with the B.R.E.A.D. organization or the purpose of our assembly on Monday night, you can read about it here. In this entry I'd like to share with you the opening reflections of Rabbi Howard Apothaker of Temple Beth Shalom, which shed some light on why the "Nehemiah Assembly" was a fitting name for that action meeting. I suppose you may be skeptical about there being any connection between this particular Hebrew scripture and the times we live in. What experience do people today have with such sentiments as... We must pawn our fields and our vineyards and our homes to get grain to stave off hunger or We have to borrow money against our fields and vineyards... ?
With all of the emphasis on helping progressive Democrats win at the Federal level, its also very important to remember to support candidates in local and state races as well.
Local candidates are the progressive movement's seed corn. By supporting progressives early on in their political careers, we help ensure a steady stream of talent that will eventually reach into the highest levels of government. Also, when you help local candidates, your support goes so much farther, so that even a little bit of time or money can have a big impact on a race.
A local, progressive candidate I strongly support is Damon Connolly, who is running for the open California State Assembly 6th District seat (Marin and south Sonoma counties). Damon is a strong advocate for progressive values, and deserves all of our help:
Primaries are coming up on June 6th in California and, having read this diary by Nathaniel Ament Stone, I thought I'd collect some information on the State Senate Races. If you have any information on these races, please post it in the comments.
