Hillary Clinton Has Already Had a 4 Week Grace Period

Mon Jun 02, 2008 at 10:31:15 AM PDT

Weak kneed Senators, including my own Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), want to give Hillary Clinton a grace period before endorsing Obama and putting him over the top later this week. These Senators do not understand the damage that a Super Delegate being the magic delegate would do to the party. And they do not understand that Hillary Clinton will take the opening they seem so desperate to give her and fight on to the Convention, thereby ensuring defeat in November. The time for Senatorial kindness is over; Barack Obama's legitimacy as the nominee is dependent upon a pledged delegate clinching it for him tomorrow night. Senator's can either act to ensure that's the case; or they can be complicit in allowing Hillary Clinton to drag this out to the Convention. As a constituent of Senator Cardin, I'm watching what unfolds very carefully.

Obama Campaign Pictorial (2006)

Thu May 01, 2008 at 06:16:46 PM PDT

Washington Post, 11/7/06:

The popular senator from Illinois, who has barnstormed the country on behalf of Democratic gubernatorial and congressional candidates, is one of the A-list political celebrities of the 2006 campaign season...  Obama may be the biggest attraction [of them all]. Despite his brief two years on the national stage, Obama has generated rapturous enthusiasm among Democrats, and he has said he is considering a presidential run. His success on the campaign trail in recent weeks has added to his cachet.

Obama's Race: Maryland's Experience Indicates It's Irrelevant

Thu Dec 13, 2007 at 02:44:20 PM PDT

Last year there were two statewide elections--one for Governor, where both the candidates were white; and one for Senate where the Republican nominee was black. The difference in vote totals is statistically insignificant, and can be explained by fmr. Lt. Gov. Michael Steele's gaffes (like calling stem cell researchers Nazis). This indicates that the so-called Bradley-Wilder effect is not longer valid. Cross-posted on my Blog

We must act quickly on torture or all is lost

Fri Nov 09, 2007 at 01:58:50 PM PDT

This will be a short but incredibly important diary (or at least statement).

People, as dismaying, disgusting, and unbelievable as it is that the senate actually confirmed Mukasey as AG without a single Republican standing up against torture and not a single Dem producing so much as a peep to stop or delay the confirmation, it does get worse.  Please follow me below the fold for why...

YOU Can Take Mukasey Down: Action

Thu Nov 01, 2007 at 02:43:45 PM PDT

Do you live in California, New York, Wisconsin, Maryland, or Vermont?

We need you now to put a stop to Mukasey.  Politico reports that Harry Reid will abide by the Judiciary Committee's vote.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said that the Senate would not hold a floor vote on the nomination of former judge Michael Mukasey to be attorney general if the nomination is rejected by the Judiciary Committee.

Democratic Judiciary Committee members Biden, Durbin, Kennedy and Whitehouse are on record with "NO" votes in committee.

A few thanks for Senate Democrats

Thu Sep 20, 2007 at 12:53:41 PM PDT

It's a nice day here in Philadelphia - a city that knows a thing or two about liberty and free speech - but my day was ruined when I got back to my dorm to find out that the Senate had voted to condemn MoveOn.org for its ad about General David Petraeus. Nevermind that it's a fair assessment of the general, who's seen as a political tool by his superiors in the armed forces. Instead, the Senate decides to pass a worthless bill condemning a grassroots organization for telling the truth in a manner that's a little too blunt for their gentle sensibilities to handle.

Fuck them.

Action Alert: Restore Habeas Corpus!

Tue Jun 05, 2007 at 09:54:25 AM PDT

The Leahy-Specter "Restoring Habeas Corpus Act of 2007" is coming up for a vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee in a few days. We all know how important this is.

I challenge each of you to make 1 - 2 phone calls, depending on whether your Senator is on that committee. Follow me in.

Senate Hearings on Deceptive Election Practices

Mon Jun 04, 2007 at 01:19:57 PM PDT

At 2:00 p.m. this Thursday, June 7, the Senate Judiciary Committee will be holding hearings on "Prevention of Deceptive Practices and Voter Intimidation in Federal Elections: S. 453." Senator Obama is sponsor of this bill and my Senator Ben Cardin is a co-sponsor. For the many Kossacks who have long been concerned about voter intimidation and suppression, you may wish to tune in.

Witnesses at the hearing will include Senators Schumer and Obama, MD Attny. Gen. Doug Gansler, PG County Exec. Jack Johnson, Hilary Shelton from the NAACP, John Trasviña of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, and Richard Briffault, Columbia Law School.

In Order to Have A 2 Party System, You Need 2 Parties...

Wed May 30, 2007 at 11:32:47 AM PDT

Here I am in Maryland where we have become a center of "Blue Dog" Democrats - in other words, Democrats who are really Republicans.

My Senators, Ben Cardin and Barbara Mikulski, and my Representative, Steny Hoyer, all recently joined the Republicans to vote in the Supplemental Bill with no timetable for ending the war in Iraq. This was difficult for me to accept, since I campaigned heavily for Cardin and Hoyer, all the while thinking that, as Democrats, they would work to bring our troops home. As I look across the country, I see there are other elected folks in other states who screwed their supporters as well.

An Open Letter to Ben Cardin, Barbara Mikulski and Steny Hoyer

Fri May 25, 2007 at 12:19:52 AM PDT

You three represent me in the Senate and the House of Representatives. I have supported each of you and was once proud to say you represented me and my neighbors in the face of the Republican mismanagement of Iraq.

Today I am ashamed of all of you.

WTF Ben Cardin, a Secret Hold?

Fri May 11, 2007 at 09:35:02 AM PDT

I live in the district.  Everywhere I go, everyone I meet, I talk about our lack of ability to do anything.  From Police having to go through the US attorney's office for arrests to having NO LEGISLATORS TO SPEAK TO about anything.  But today, I find out that Ben Cardin has a SECRET F*&#ing HOLD on legislation affecting DC schools. (apparently, I should point out that the Senator was confronted about the hold and he then gave up that he had placed the hold on it.  It's no longe a secret, once he was confronted.)

Here, let me explain....

Our New Senators (Pictorial w/poll)

Wed Jan 10, 2007 at 07:45:11 AM PDT

For some reason, I was beat Monday evening.  Fell asleep really early, then woke up in the middle of the night c. 3am for awhile.  Flipped on the tube, and caught a C-SPAN press conference with the freshman Democratic Senators.  (Click on News Conference on Ethics and Lobbying Reform Legislation to see the clip.)  They were all there (but for Webb).  So were Reid, Feingold & Obama.  They came across A-OK, definitely worth watching the video.

MD-Sen: Calculated effort to lie to voters

Mon Nov 13, 2006 at 02:20:31 PM PDT

They can't win playing fair, so they lie and cheat.

On board, 300 mostly poor African Americans from Philadelphia ate doughnuts, sipped coffee and prepared to spend the day at the Maryland polls. After an early morning greeting from Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.'s wife, Kendel, they would fan out in white vans across Prince George's County and inner-city Baltimore, armed with thousands of fliers that appeared to be designed to trick black Democrats into voting for the two Republican candidates.

The glossy fliers bore photos of black Democratic leaders on the front. Under the headline "Democratic Sample Ballot" were boxes checked in red for Ehrlich and Senate candidate Michael S. Steele, who were not identified as Republicans. Their names were followed by a long list of local Democratic candidates.

Nearly a week later, a fuller picture has emerged about how the plan to capture blacks' votes unfolded -- details that suggest the fliers, and the people paid to distribute them, were not part of a hurry-up effort but a calculated strategy.

And why do they do this? Because it's how they've won past elections.

It also was not the first time Ehrlich and Steele had used fliers that some considered deceptive. U.S. Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D) still recalls arriving at a polling place in his Baltimore district during the 2002 governor's race and being handed a glossy flier.

"They handed me this big, beautiful piece of literature. It was better than any of the literature I have ever produced," Cummings recalled. "I said, 'Boy this is a wonderful photo.' There's my pastor, and [then-Housing and Urban Development Secretary] Mel Martinez, and [former Baltimore delegate] Tony Fulton and myself. Then I saw Ehrlich in the picture, and I saw the words and I said, 'Uh oh.' "

The words read, "Democrats for Ehrlich." Cummings was livid. He had been one of the most vocal supporters of Ehrlich's opponent, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend (D). He immediately went on talk radio to denounce it, recorded a message to voters and went on television.

But the incident was largely ignored, washed away by the bigger news that day: Ehrlich had won the election.

These sorts of deceptions need to be criminal offenses, with criminal penalties. Not fines -- those are simply added on to the cost of doing politics. But prison terms. Make these people pay for their lies and deceptions.

Update: More:

YUSUF EL-BEDAWI is no fool. He knows politicians can play dirty.

He's just livid at being tricked into playing dirty with them on Election Day. All because he's homeless - and therefore, apparently, considered too unprincipled to give a damn about the integrity of the voting process [...]

At first, the time passed pleasantly until some of the voters took a closer look at the flier that El-Bedawi was passing out, and went ballistic. It was labeled "Ehrlich-Steele Democrats" and "Official Voter Guide," and its sample ballot pushed Ehrlich and Steele, who are not identified as being Republican [...]

"I am so angry and upset, I don't know what to do," said El-Bedawi, who's particularly shattered that he and at least 200 other Philadelphians didn't get home from Maryland in time to vote here.

"These people think we're too stupid to understand the magnitude of what we did."

MD-Sen: Democrats Seek Results, Not Revenge

Fri Nov 10, 2006 at 05:06:46 AM PDT

(Sun photo by Kim Hairston)

According to an article in yesterday's Baltimore Sun, Ben Cardin and Barb Mikulski are already working together to plan what legislation they would like to introduce in the first 100 days of 2007.  They have put their focus on healthcare, college financial aid, jobs and dealing with the situation in Iraq for starters.

Mikulski, now the senior Senator from Maryland, stressed that the American public sent them to get the job done, not to squabble with Republicans.  "When the Democrats go in, we don't seek revenge. We seek results."

MD - We did it.

Wed Nov 08, 2006 at 11:42:16 AM PDT

After a very long, hard fought campaign and an even longer election day filled with door hangers, knocking, phone calls, and flushing juicy precincts... we did it!

MD-SEN - Cardin Win Projection Retracted? Recount coming?

Tue Nov 07, 2006 at 08:16:53 PM PDT

Okay, I couldn't resist but turn on Fox News to see them eat craw, but what they're reporting isn't exactly good news.  They just reported that the win of Ben Cardin is being retracted and that Steele will NOT concede.

There may be a recount in MD, not to mention VA as well.

Let's hope this is just a blip and will go back safely to the Cardin camp, but I just saw it and felt compelled to report it.
