Fighting Dems Webb (Senate) and Weed (House) for Congress in the VA Primary - and New Jersey, too.

Sun Jun 04, 2006 at 10:01:56 AM PDT

The Fighting Dem Vets Diary this week will be reminding folks of the CA primary that we posted on last week (read here) and featuring the VA primary coming up a week from Tuesday. This Tuesday is also the NJ primary and our solo candidate from NJ, Rich Sexton, will be live blogging with us today along with any of the other vets who can break away from church or campaigning.

Get Jim Webb and Harris Miller on C-Span

Wed Mar 22, 2006 at 11:33:50 AM PDT

On March 31st, the Democratic party in VA-05 is holding its annual dinner. Speakers will be Jim Webb, Harris Miller, and the two congressional candidates, Fighting Dems Al Weed and Bern Ewert. They're trying to replace George "Football Metaphor" Allen and Virgil "MZM Scandal" Goode this November.

C-SPAN has nothing planned for March 31st programming, and we'd like them to cover the event. If you want to see both sides of these two primary races, help us out; e-mail events@c-span.org and tell them to cover the 5th District Dinner on March 31.

Below the fold, I list some of the reasons why these speakers, and the 5th district in particular are important parts of the progressive movement. events@c-span.org

VA: State Senator Frank Ruff Opens Mouth, Removes All Doubt

Fri Mar 10, 2006 at 12:27:54 AM PDT

From Republican State Senator Frank Ruff in, well, every paper in the district:

'Rep. Goode Has 'The Highest Character'

Editor, The Herald:

I write in amazement that Congressman Virgil Goode's potential opponents in this fall's election have made the following statements regarding Mitchell Wade and his company:

VA-05: Bern Ewert (D): Is He Hiding Something?

Fri Feb 24, 2006 at 05:07:50 PM PDT

There is a well-worn adage that we as Democrats should tell the whole story before the Republicans get hold of it, so we can define the debate and blunt the effect of it. In other words, better that we should discuss our own warts rather than have them pointed out by our adversaries.

In this diary, I will be discussing Virginia's 5th Congressional District race. There are two Democratic candidates running, Al Weed and Bern Ewert. Al, a pioneering wine grape grower, ran two years ago and was trounced by Virgil Goode. (Goode was implicated today again in MZM dealings with Mitchell Wade.) Bern has been a City Manager among other things.

Today I am focusing on Bern Ewert, because certain facts have come to light in my research on this contest. I want to make sure that we have the best chance at beating Virgil in the fall. Unfortunately, Bern does not look like the person to do that.
