5 p.m. PDT Daily Open Obama V.P. Thread #51: Final Elimination Round Seven (w/poll)

Sat Jul 26, 2008 at 05:00:09 PM PDT

Welcome back for more speculation! Today we'll continue the final elimination series of possibilities for Obama's v.p.

This series began with the bottom 14 names, and eliminates the bottom vote-getter(s) and replaces them with new name(s) from just up the list, reaveraging as we go (so each thread's bottom vote-getter[s] may not be the ones cut--who's cut will be determined by the new averages generated from this series's votes only). I'm hoping we'll have five or six candidates left when Obama picks and see if the DKos wisdom of crowds is. It should take about 14 threads to get all of the top candidates in the poll again, out of the 28 or so total threads. Fmr. Gov. Ray Mabus (MS) was eliminated in the previous round, and Gov. Tim Kaine (VA) rotated in to replace him this time. Sen. Jack Reed (RI) made his Shermanesque statement, so Fmr. Vice President Al Gore rotated in to replace him.

Please discuss any v.p. candidates in the comments. The most correct format would be to simply state their name, unless you have further comments. "Oh my God, where's Jane/Johnny Politician?!" would be a bit alarmist, don't you think? I'm sure they're fine. I'm happy to hear all ideas, and of course I'm no official gatekeeper, so play nice.

I hope that'll be complicated enough to dissatisfy and confuse everyone equally. I'm hoping we'll have five or six candidates left when Obama picks and see if the DKos wisdom of crowds is. It should take about 14 threads to get all of the top candidates in the poll again, out of the 28 or so total threads. Sen. Bill Nelson (FL) was eliminated in the previous round, and Rep. 5 p.m. PDT Daily Open Obama V.P. Thread #45: Final Elimination Round One (w/poll)

Thu Jul 17, 2008 at 04:59:01 PM PDT

Welcome back for more speculation! Today we'll poll the second-tier possibilities for Obama's v.p., from my new slimmed-down field of 28.

This elimination series will begin with the bottom 14 names, then eliminate the bottom vote-getter(s) and replace them with new names from just up the list for the next thread, reaveraging as we go (so each thread's bottom vote-getter(s) may not be the ones cut for the next--who's cut will be determined by the new averages generated from this elimination series's votes). I hope that'll be complicated enough to dissatisfy and confuse everyone equally. I'm hoping we'll have five or six candidates left when Obama picks and see if the DKos wisdom of crowds is. 5 p.m. PDT Daily Open Obama V.P. Thread #40 (w/poll)

Thu Jul 03, 2008 at 05:00:08 PM PDT

Welcome back for more veep speculation! Last thread we considered the top military veteran candidates to be Obama's v.p. Averaging in those votes yielded the same top 14 average vote-getters overall as the thread before that, so we'll consider them again in today's poll.

I'm still alternating "break-out" polls with the top 14 average vote-getting candidates in these threads' polls, averaging in each day's votes as we go. I'm going to do the top possibilities experienced with foreign policy/national security issues and governors/former governors before cutting 14 names to narrow the field to just two tiers--that's if Obama hasn't decided by then, of course. I'll reset the averages then, too. So that would be three or four more threads away from today.

Please discuss any v.p. candidates in the comments. The correct format would be to simply state their name, unless you have further comments, in which case, "I believe ___ ___ should be Obama's v.p. running mate because..." "Oh my God, where's Johnny/Jane Politician?!" would be a bit alarmist, don't you think? I'm sure they're fine. I'm happy to hear all ideas, and of course I'm no official gatekeeper, so play nice.

Tue Jun 24, 2008 at 05:00:47 PM PDT

Welcome back for more veep speculation! Yesterday we considered my own top picks, which got some mixed reviews. Averaging in those votes yielded a slightly different top 14 average vote-getters overall as the thread before that--namely, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg dropped down a spot, and Fmr. Sen. I'm still alternating "break-out" polls with polls of the the top 14 average vote-getting candidates from these threads, averaging in each day's votes as we go. Mon Jun 23, 2008 at 04:59:49 PM PDT

Welcome back for more speculation! As promised yesterday, today we'll be polling my personal top 14 possibilities for Obama's v.p. This is the first time I've listed just my personal top 14, so you can see my true biases and whether you agree. (They are not those I necessarily consider most likely to be chosen.)

I'm still alternating "break-out" polls for a while longer with the top 14 average vote-getting candidates in these threads' polls, averaging in each day's votes as we go. I'm going to do the top Westerners, military veterans, those experienced with foreign policy/national security issues, and governors before cutting 14 names to narrow the field to just two tiers--that's if Obama hasn't decided by then, of course.

Bill Bradley for VP.  Axelrod may favor him too

Fri Jun 20, 2008 at 08:28:34 AM PDT

Apologies for the Axelrod tease, which is over a week old and just a bit of gossip from  a NJ political blog. I included it to try to get atttention for yet another VP diary.

Bradley is not mentioned in a recent AP article, on VP speculation, but does fit the mold for a partner in change Obama's team said they are looking for, which was in general someone who could help him rebuild the country ... and talk about change.

After seeing Bradley's name as second or third choice to Ed Rendell for VP in this take from a Boston Phoenix columnist, I've done a bit of research and become a big fan of Bill Bradley. If your not bored with this topic and this VP candidate, stay with me for a brief summary of how The New American Story (with song) is change we can believe in.

Forget dream ticket, how about dream team?

Sun Jun 15, 2008 at 05:30:52 PM PDT

Conventional wisdom tells us that the race for the White House will soon be Obama/_____ versus McCain/_____ and we will make our decisions based on those four names.  The Obama campaign has strayed from conventional wisdom quite a few times this primary with great success and I believe this is another time for him to do so.

Why only announce your Vice Presidential candidate prior to the election when you could announce Cabinet members as well?  In addition to the free press this will get the Obama campaign simply by breaking precedent and having multiple people on the campaign trail, shoring up support, talking to the press, and pulling in donations, this would challenge McCain to announce his cabinet early as well which is especially important with his Cheney comments.

In this concept, over the next week I will give my suggestions for Attorney General, Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President.  Each fills a part of the ticket bringing expertise, knowledge, and passion to the group.  Today I'll go with Vice President.

5 p.m. PDT Daily Open Obama V.P. Thread #27: Second Tier (w/poll)

Wed Jun 11, 2008 at 05:38:14 PM PDT

Welcome back for more v.p. speculation! I had a doctor's appointment today, so I'm a bit late posting, but I decided to go ahead as it is still the 5 o'clock hour here on the left coast. As promised two threads ago, since the top 14 average vote-getting candidates list was unchanged from the previous thread I ran, today's will present the second tier of vote-getters and add one new name not yet tested here, Fmr. Sen. Tom Daschle (SD), who replaces Gov. Ted Strickland (OH), who definitively took himself out of contention yesterday.

I'm thinking of running some "break-out" polls after that, perhaps by age, sex, military experience, place on the political spectrum, etc., some of which I've done before, but we'll see about that after the next thread.

Please discuss any v.p. candidates in the comments. The correct format would be to simply state their name, unless you have further comments, in which case, "I believe ___ ___ should be Obama's v.p. running mate because..." "Oh my God, where's Johnny Politician?!" would be a bit alarmist, don't you think? I'm sure they're fine. I'm happy to hear all ideas, and of course I'm no official gatekeeper, so play nice.

In Honor of the NBA Finals: Bill for VP?

Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 07:34:57 PM PDT

(No not that one...)

One name that has been barely mentioned among the many persons offered up to be Barack Obama's running-mate is the one that may offer the most surprise and the most upside. He's been out of office awhile, but he was broadly popular, known for reaching across the aisle, was a friend and ally to African-Americans, and was taller than the average horse.

No, it's not Bill Clinton (not to mention Bill Richardson).

It's Bill Bradley...the common-sense progressive who ran an insurgent campaign not unlike Obama's, vying against another Clinton-era Dem, attracting a lot of Independent and moderate Republican support, but losing in the end.

Given the start of the NBA finals tonight, I'd like to throw his name back into the hat. Let's look at some of the positives with Bradley, and see how he might serve to be a strong reinforcing pick on an Obama ticket....

Thank you Senators Daschle and Bradley

Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 10:39:02 AM PDT

While many people in the Obama campaign have deservedly gotten high praise by many here on dKos for a brilliantly run campaign, some early supporters appear to have been overlooked.  They are "establishment" politicians who could have taken the easy route by backing Hillary Clinton or not endorsing any Democratic candidate during the primary.  Instead they stood up for what they believed in, and believed would be in the best interest of the country.  Two of those I would like to acknowledge are former Senators Tom Daschle and Bill Bradley.
Tom Daschle was hiting the Sunday news show circuit and elsewhere when many people had barely heard of Barack Obama, let alone before the TM considered him a serious challenger to Clinton.  Bill Bradley endorsed Obama just prior to "Super Tuesday", gaining even more media time as another key campaign surrogate.
Although these two former senators may not have had the star power that others in the Democratic party had at the time, they had enough to get critical air time to put Obama's name and message out to the public.

VP = President (Part 1)

Wed Jun 04, 2008 at 08:50:30 AM PDT

Amidst all the discussions about Barack Obama's potential running mate, the single most important consideration is being consistently overlooked.

The office of vice-president exists so that the president can be swiftly replaced in the event of his death, removal or incapacitation. Indeed, this is why we have vice-presidents. These individuals are only a heartbeat away from the most powerful office in the world.

This is such a stark consideration that it really ought to narrow things down somewhat regarding whom Obama should choose. Far too many discussions that I have observed treat the "running mate" as some kind of special electoral buddy, whose primary responsibility is to somehow grab votes that Obama could not secure on his own. Much of the reasoning behind the purported electoral impact of the running mate is ill-founded, speculative and secondary to our principal goal of electing representatives that we believe in.
