DC Charities are all about ........CHILDREN

Wed Jan 04, 2006 at 06:06:05 AM PDT

The Washington, D.C. area is just brimming with charities devoted to raising money for children.  In addition to the Capital Athletic Foundation, there's Joe Gibbs' Youth for Tomorow Fund, the Mody Foundation and Fight for Children, to name just a few. Obviously, their endeavors are too broad to cover in a little diary on KOS, but Fight for Children might provide a good example.

Just a taste, following the break.

What Does The Matthews / CAF Connection Tell Us

Wed Jan 04, 2006 at 04:18:45 AM PDT

Kos has written a great article about the participation of Chris Matthews in a fundraiser for one of Jack Abramoff's faux charities-the Capital Athletic Foundation.  Also involved in the same fundraiser were Tony Snow and Brit Hume.  For some reason, maybe the fact that they are openly conservative and work for Faux News, Kos gives them a pass. After all we don't expect much from those guys. We hope and pray Chris Matthews does better, and are disappointed when he doesn't.

When I read the piece I thought, duh, he is Chris Matthews, talk show host, not Chris Matthews, journalist--you are expecting something better from him?  Then I ask why I thought that.  That led to the following questions about modern centralized broadcast (and big time print) journalism.

Matthews implicated in Abramoff scandal

Tue Jan 03, 2006 at 10:01:37 PM PDT

Okay, things are suddenly starting to make sense. If you were wondering why Chris Matthews was so desperate to explain away the Abramoff scandal, now we know why. Aravosis has the scoop.

First there's this:

Abramoff forms a group called the "Capital Athletic Foundation." The group appears to play a key role in the Abramoff scandal:

...allegations that Abramoff used NCPPR and CAF to pay for overseas trips for House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, and other Republican lawmakers and that he attempted to influence lawmakers with large donations from various American Indian tribes.

More on the Capital Athletic Foundation from the Washington Post:

Records for GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff's Capital Athletic Foundation show that less than 1 percent of its revenue has been spent on sports-related programs for youths, and federal investigators are looking into how large amounts of money were funneled through the nonprofit group to support Abramoff's interests. (Thomas Butler -- The Hill)

Now this is where it gets interesting:

Then we go back to March 5, 2003 and find out that Chris Matthews helped put on an event benefiting the very same "Capital Athletic Foundation":

It's called the Interactive Spy Game Gala. Scheduled for March 26 at the International Spy Museum in Washington, the event's purpose is to raise about $300,000 for the Capital Athletic Foundation....

Fox News Channel's Tony Snow is master of ceremonies, and Fox's Brit Hume and MSNBC's Chris Matthews are aboard. Opera great Placido Domingo is an event committee member. But, this being Washington, the event will be mostly populated by powerful lawmakers, including Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas; Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa.; and Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif.

Now there are two big issues here -- one is the fact that Matthews has cavorted with Abramoff in the past, to the point of helping out with one of his sham charities.

Then there's the ethical issues with this so-called journalist hanging out in (and helping with) such a blatantly partisan event. It's again obvious that his schmoozing with the rich and powerful have hampered his ability to commentate on those issues properly detached and rational. He's been co-opted by the DeLay/Abramoff machine.

Combined, those two issues make it painfully obvious why Matthews is completely uncredible to discuss this issue. Of course, this being the modern media at work, he'll continue to play his role in efforts to explain and obfuscate this scandal away.

Bonus: Rick Santorum had avoided any Abramoff taint until now.

Doolittle, Delay, Abramoff - Family Ties

Tue Dec 27, 2005 at 08:16:43 AM PDT

Interest in California Congressman John Doolittle's ties to Jack Abramoff is beginning to shine the light on some very interesting fund raising practices and associations of the powerful Northern California (CA-4) representative.

One of the central issues under investigation is the relationship of the company owned by Congressman Doolittle's wife and several shady operations that fall under the Abramoff/Delay umbrella. Julie Doolittle is the president of Sierra Dominion Financial Solutions, a company that does fundraising for her husband's powerful Superior California Federal Leadership Fund, a political action committee (PAC).
