Saturday's Canada geese in desert pasture.

Sat May 31, 2008 at 07:57:17 AM PDT

This is the strangest thing! I still can't believe I saw what I saw. Last night at a favored ranch out of town, about  time to enjoy a lovely dessert, we heard geese honking. In the high mountain desert! I didn't have my camera, darn it. BUT it was such a rare and wild situation, I posted the scene in a collage showing desert geese and more detailed story. Thanks for taking a look. I know, the collage is goofy. But it shows you what happened.

"You Can Fix All the World's Problems In a Garden"

Thu May 03, 2007 at 07:50:34 PM PDT

"You can solve them all in a garden. You can solve all your pollution problems and all your supply line needs in a garden. And most people actually today don't actually know that and that makes most people insecure."

So says Geoff Lawton from the Permaculture Research Institute of Australia.  He proves it here with a video describing how permacultural design and a local team desalinated the soil and grew a garden on 10 acres of barren desert land two kilometers from the Dead Sea.  Within four months, the trees produced their first figs.

"We could regreen the Middle East.   We could regreen any desert...."

I think Candide would agree.  I'm not sure about Voltaire.

Scary: 1/3 of Earth = Desert (no agriculture) by year 2100

Tue Oct 03, 2006 at 10:14:10 PM PDT

Let's lift our heads for a moment from "All Foley, All The Time."  C'mon.  Just for a moment.

This newly publicized study from the UK's Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research is alarming, to say the least.

It forecasts the following:

DROUGHT SEVERITY INDEX

Moderate Drought or worse:  Currently 25% of Earth's surface
Forecast to grow to 50% by year 2100

Severe Drought or worse:  Currently 8% of Earth's surface
Forecast to grow to 40% by year 2100

Extreme Drought (no agriculture possible):  Currently 3% of Earth's surface
Forecast to grow to 30% by year 2100

It's hard to grasp the magnitude of such a story... think past Ethiopian famines, multiplied tenfold.  Massive die-offs, futile philanthropic efforts, desperate mass migrations.  Article excerpts below -

Now Imagine A Republican Had Said This...

Sat Aug 19, 2006 at 05:45:46 PM PDT

Now, I know that if a Rethug had said this, the board (DKos) would be all over it.  Unfortunately, it isn't a Republican, it's the guys that SOME people on this board have been rooting for the past ... (recent past)

"Al-aqsa leader: Hizbullah defeated 'gay' Israeli soldiers"

Al-aqsa is the "Martyrs Brigades". a terrorist group in Palestine with alliance to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party.

"Abu Oudai said there was "no chance" an international or Lebanese force would stop Hizbullah from maintaining arms or from regrouping in south Lebanon."
