FL-15 is an Open Seat - Here is Our Candidate

Mon Apr 14, 2008 at 05:49:29 AM PDT

It was a surprise when incumbent Dave Weldon dropped out. Meanwhile progressive Democrat, environmentalist, single payer advocate and local community family physician Steve Blythe is running for our side!

Disclaimer: Despite the similarity in name and initials, he is not me and I am not he. (I am a pediatrician in NY, he is a Family Physician in Florida).  Republican State Senator Bill Posey is the opponent. There seem to be a lot Steves around. :)

Today the Blythe campaign announced that it has successfully delivered the necessary petitions and that they have been validated. He has gotten the ball rolling. Our challenge is, are we serious about supporting a Democratic challenger in every district, especially when it is an open seat?

Here's Dr. Steve Blythe introducing himself:

Other Democratic Primary News from Florida

Mon Jan 28, 2008 at 06:17:09 AM PDT

No this is not about Clinton's attempts to change the rules in the middle of the game.

This is about the looming Democratic congressional race primary in the FL-15, now that incumbent Repuglican Dave Weldon has dropped out.

The guy I have liked for months, ever since meeting him at the PNHP national annual meeting (despite the name, I am not he; he is not me; we have no other relationship) is Dr. Steve Blythe, an up by his own boostraps physician from a working class background, progressive Democrat, environmentalist, single payer supporter. He was running and fighting the good fight well bebore Weldon's surprise announcement.

But now that Weldon is out, local Democratic Party establishment types are eyeing the race.

Here is Dr. Blythe's inititial response:

Weldon (R-FL-15) Quits - Let's Elect Dr. Steve Blythe

Fri Jan 25, 2008 at 12:20:26 PM PDT

With the great news that Dave Weldon, the conservative Repuglican incumbent in FL-15 has decided to not run, I would like to suggest that we make previously declared, already running challenger, Dr. Steve Blythe a netroots favorite.

Steve's from a working class background, paid for Med school as a NHSC scholar, he is a longtime member of PNHP and support single-payer real universal health care HR-676), he's strongly pro-environment... all around good guy.

Huge day for House races in Florida and New York

Fri Jan 25, 2008 at 11:15:34 AM PDT

There's all kinds of terrific horserace news coming in, and our chances of substantially increasing our House majority are looking better every day. A quick roundup:

--First the biggest news, in FL-15: Florida Republican Dave Weldon will not be seeking reelection. On top of that, we have a strong candidate poised to enter the race in former Brevard County Commissioner Nancy Higgs, who steered the commission during the 2004 hurricane.

Rep. Dave Weldon (R-Fla.) announced Friday that he will retire from Congress at the end of this session, citing a desire to return to his medical practice.

"I want to thank my wife Nancy and my kids for all the support over these many years, as well as my staff and the people who supported my re-election efforts. It is a very big undertaking to run and successfully serve, and I would never have been able to do it were it not for the generous help of so many fine people," Weldon said in a statement.

Weldon, 54, is a seven-term lawmaker who sits on the House Appropriations Committee.

Weldon is the 22nd GOP incumbent to announce that they will not seek reelection in 2008.

Six-term incumbent Weldon won with just 56% of the vote against an underfunded challenger in 2006, so the prospect of an open-seat race here is very exciting. The district is relatively Republican with a PVI of R+4.1, but it is an open seat, and we expect this to be a Democratic year. Bush won with 54% and 57% here in 2000 and 2004.

Rumored Republican candidates include State Senators Bill Posey and Mike Haridopolos.

--In addition to FL-15, we can now put two additional Florida seats (these ones based in the Miami area) on the map for 2008: the 18th District and the 25th District. Following hot on the heels of the recent entry of Raul Martinez into the race in Florida's 21st district to face Republican Lincoln Diaz-Balart, we have two more serious candidates jumping in to take on Miami-area Republicans.

In the 18th District, businesswoman Annette Taddeo, founder of a language services company, will take on incumbent Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen; and in the 25th District, Miami-Dade County party chairman Joe Garcia, also director of NDN's Hispanic Strategy Center and formerly Chairman of the Florida Public Services Commission, will run against Lincoln Diaz-Balart's brother Mario.

Garcia's potential entry has been rumored for months, and it's exciting to see him finally getting in the race. With his service as Miami-Dade party chair, he's a high-profile name with a good deal of influence in the district, and he has a national profile from working with NDN. The 25th District is more favorable territory for Democrats than the 21st is: it has a PVI of 4.4, Bush drew 56% in 2004 and 55% in 2000. Diaz-Balart drew the district for himself, in fact, when he served in the Florida House.

--Up in New York's 25th, following the retirement of Republican incumbent Jim Walsh, Democratic standard-bearer and Blue Majority candidate Dan Maffei has been added to the DCCC's Red To Blue program. This is most excellent news, as the DCCC's backing of Maffei should preclude any stuffy old Albany pols from jumping into the race, and will spare us the pain of an ugly primary. Also, it tells potential GOP candidates to think twice about running in this Democratic district, as we'll have a single strong candidate with establishment support. And finally, it's wonderful that the DCCC sees the same things in Dan Maffei that we see.

--Finally, up in New York's 29th District, Republican Randy Kuhl, who barely hung on to defeat Eric Massa last year and faces him again, has apparently not decided whether to run for reelection. I guess his highly deceptive flyers haven't been doing the trick.

Congressional races by state: FL, CT, MI

Thu Jan 24, 2008 at 02:45:26 AM PDT

For previous diaries in this series, see here

I am all for running everywhere, and the 50 state strategy.

But neither we nor the Republicans are running everywhere (at least not yet!) In this series, I will look at where we are not running (I am not going to look at where Republicans are not running, as I have no desire to help Republicans, however modestly)

This diary is partly inspired by the great work done by BENAWU.

FL-15: Single Payer ActBlue Physician Challenges Weldon

Thu Nov 08, 2007 at 09:57:42 AM PDT

Along with over 400 other physicians, nurses and activists, I attended the Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP) annual conference in D.C. last week. The meeting was great, with a keynote and award going to Rep. John Conyers, and I will blog further on it later.

For now I want to help spread the word about a longtime PNHP member, Dr. Steve Blythe, who is running as a Democrat (duh) against Dave Weldon (Incumbent R).  Weldon was a ringleader in the Terri Schiavo fiasco and of course is opposed to SHCIP expansion. A classic "right to life... until born" type of guy.

Meet Steve Blythe! This is a guy who should be a Netroots supported candidate. Here is his ActBlue site.

Fellow Physician to Challenge Dr. Dave Weldon for FL-15

Mon Oct 29, 2007 at 09:00:49 AM PDT

Two doctors could square off against each other in Florida 15.  From News Unfiltered.

Congressman Dave Weldon (R-FL), a physician, voted one more time against the Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), thus helping to prevent the expansion of this program to cover some of the 9 million uninsured children in our country. Dr. Stephen Blythe, a family physician in the congressman's district, takes such exception to Weldon's actions in Congress that he will be running against him for the 15th District seat next year. This may be the first time two physicians have faced each other in a congressional race in fifty years.

When the levees break and anger floods the land

Tue Oct 02, 2007 at 07:05:27 AM PDT

This is one of those mornings where I've got to take a deep breath and make myself believe help is on the way.

The key word here is believe. Today, I barely even believe help is on the way. And even if it is, will it be too little, too late?

And who will be the bearer? If you agree with bonddad, you've got to have mixed emotions about the abilities and motives of our saviors.

So if you're interested, I'll give you the reasons for my despair.

But before I do, the rage of the American people is building. Yesterday I spoke to a lifelong Republican, he said, "I'm finished with them!"

Well I say, and you know who this is addressed to, watch out when the levees break and anger floods the land.

  1. Bonddad's diary. He's right. Have you ever had the pleasure of being in a room with a bunch of politicians? Not fun Awful, most many some of these people are such imbeciles you wouldn't trust them to make you a bologna sandwich.

OH-01, NJ-Sen, FL-15: Race updates

Fri May 04, 2007 at 08:52:35 AM PDT

One of the few disappointments last cycle for Democrats was the Ohio House races. While Dems swept statewide offices (like the governor and Senate races), we only picked up a single House seat despite having as many as five competitive races. One of those disappointments was Rep. Steve Chabot's Republican seat in OH-01. Democrats, however, think they have found their guy for 2008.

Democratic state Rep. Steve Driehaus [the Minority Whip in the Ohio House], whose potential already is being touted by national party strategists, has taken official steps to organize his anticipated challenge to Chabot in the Cincinnati-based 1st District [...]

The 1st — which takes in about 80 percent of Cincinnati (which is shared with the 2nd District) and suburbs north and west of the city in Hamilton and Butler counties — has the characteristics of a swing district. Even as Chabot was prevailing in his 2006 election, 1st District voters narrowly favored Democrats Ted Strickland for governor and Sherrod Brown for senator; President Bush edged his 2004 Democratic challenger, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, by just 1 percentage point.

Meanwhile, New Jersey Republicans seem to have finally gotten the message -- what appears to be tantalizing pickup opportunities for them are only mirages. They've got no top-tier challengers for Sen. Lautenberg, who isn't the most popular guy in the Senate (though in all fairness, Garden Staters hate all their politicians).

If New Jersey Republicans are to stage a serious challenge next year to Democratic Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg, it appears at least at this early juncture in the campaign cycle that they will have to do it without a big-name candidate.

The political icons mentioned every time there is a major statewide race in New Jersey — former governors Thomas H. Kean and Christine Todd Whitman — remain GOP dreams, as neither has suggested interest in running against Lautenberg. State Sen. Tom Kean Jr., the ex-governor’s son, staged an aggressive bid last year to unseat Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez but lost by 53 percent to 44 percent, and appears likely to pursue more seasoning in the state legislature before re-entering statewide politics.

So party strategists at this point are sizing up a pair of eager but much lesser-known Republicans who have expressed interest in seeking the 2008 Senate nomination.

And down in FL-15, this fairly Republican district (R+6) represented by another crazy "Weldon" (Dave Weldon), will see the emergence of a new Fighting Dem -- Air Force Reserve Lt. Col. Paul Rancatore.

Rancatore said his background will benefit him in the district, located in the eastern region of Florida known as the “Space Coast.” Rancatore serves at the Pentagon as director for commercialization of human space flight in the National Security and Space Office and is also a pilot for American Airlines.

The Kennedy Space Center, once included within the boundaries of the 15th, has been part of the neighboring 24th since the redistricting earlier this decade, but much of the 15th’s economy is still tied to the space center. The district is home to Patrick Air Force Base.

Rancatore would need to overcome the district’s Republican track record, however, to wage a strong challenge. Voters there supported President Bush in 2004 with 57 percent of the vote compared with 43 percent for Democrat John Kerry.

Weldon was easily re-elected to a seventh term last fall in a year that saw Democrats make significant national gains, taking over enough Republican seats to win majorities in both the House and Senate.

But there may be at least a smidgen of hope for the Democrats in the fact that Weldon took a less-than-landslide 56 percent of the vote to defeat Democrat Bob Bowman, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel and frequent candidate who the incumbent outspent by a ratio of 8 to 1.

Weldon is best known for being the lead bully in the Terry Schiavo mess.

[A] judge in Florida recently ruled that Schiavo's feeding tubes must be removed by March 18.

But Weldon, a doctor turned politician, refused to sit idle as the two sides clashed. He rushed to introduce the bill and asked House leaders to expedite it so the legislation could be rushed directly to the Senate floor before Schiavo's feeding tube is removed on Friday.

The bill, he said, would give Schiavo the representation she deserves.

"That woman is not in a vegetative state," he said this week, challenging media reports that claimed she was. "She responds to verbal stimuli, she attempts to vocalize, she tracks with her eyes, she emotes, she attempts to kiss her father."

"As a doctor," Weldon said, "I would never pull her tube out."

He is also the subject of retirement rumors. The linked CQ article quotes a Weldon spokesperson saying Weldon is "actively raising money" for reelection, but he clocked in at an anemic $58,000 for Q1. He has $353K CoH. He spent nearly $1 million last cycle against a Democrat who spent only $115K.

With the GOP brand in the gutter and Iraq making them extra radioactive, Republicans like Weldon will be as vulnerable in 2008 as they were in 2006. And with the first wave of takeovers completed in 2006, we can turn our attention to districts like this one in 2008.

Republicans like Crazy Dave Weldon will have to decide whether they want to go out by dignified retirement or humiliating defeat.

The Road to the Presidency Runs Through Central Florida

But, the email’s title spoke to me, because I’ve been thinking along the same lines recently. Let me explain.

An Opportunity for More Change

(cross-posted at my new local progressive blog Space Coast Rising)

The 2006 elections yielded mixed results for Florida Democrats. Great gains were made, but they fell behind many expectations. We reelected Bill Nelson (D) to the United States Senate, but we fell short of electing a Democratic governor. We have a new Democratic Chief Financial Officer, but the majority of statewide offices are still held by Republicans. We made gains in the state legislature, but we are still outnumbered in both chambers. The biggest gain came from the U.S. House seats. Only four districts in the whole Southeast region flipped--two of them were in Florida. Another one is currently contested, and might end up in a recount.

Below I will examine our gains and losses while making suggestions for future strategies.

Space Coast Rising Launches!

Fri Nov 10, 2006 at 10:32:34 AM PDT

Inspired by the overwhelming Democratic win on November 7, I have decided to launch my own local progressive blog Space Coast Rising. While Florida made some great gains, it lagged behind the rest of the nation (for a purple state, at least). Florida will be pivotal in the 2008 elections. I hope Florida Kossacks will join me in providing new progressive media to a state sorely in need of it.

Below I have reproduced Space Coast Rising's first entry. Comments and critiques are welcome. I will probably cross-post more diaries over the next few weeks to promote the new blog.

FL-15, Bowman our latest October Surprise

Wed Oct 11, 2006 at 09:20:07 AM PDT

Dr. Bob Bowman is the latest profiled candidate in America In Solidarity "Our October Surprise" which features candidates that have signed a pledge to support working families. Bob has pledged to serve the needs of his constituents and the American people, not the lobbyists or big money interests, nor even the party's leadership. Fiercely independent, Dr. Bob is part of a national campaign to Take Back America by electing a Citizens' Congress pledged to serve the people. His main issues are (1) End the Iraq War. He supports the call of Congressman Jack Murtha and the U.S. Roman Catholic Bishops for a rapid, responsible withdrawal. (2) Provide Health Care for all. Dr. Bob wants to get the insurance companies out of health care and have a doctor-run Single-Payer National Health Program. (3) Assure financial security for American families. Quit exporting jobs and provide good jobs at a living wage for all Americans.
