Republican running as a Democrat in San Diego County??
Wed May 02, 2007 at 08:52:27 PM PDT
Yesterday I received the following letter from Francine Busby, who ran against the unlamented former Congressman Randy Cunningham. She writes:
A "stealth" Republican is running as a Democratic candidate in the 78th Assembly District. Until November 2006 he was a loyal Republican who contributed thousands of dollars to Brian Bilbray and the powerful Republican Lincoln Club.
Help me stop Republicans from hijacking our Democratic primary.
Crashing the States: CANDIDATE VIDEOS: CA-50, CO-06, IL-10, NH-02, NY-29, PA-08, PA-07, WA-08

Well, it's been a hell of a ride and we're finishing up the road trip portion of the project as we drive to Las Vegas and the Carter campaign. Over 9,000 miles through rain in Virginia, hail in Indiana, flooding in Texas, snow in Colorado, sleet in Montana, and cloudless blue skies in California. And through it all, we actually managed to capture, sync, edit, render and upload videos of many of our interviews.
For those who may not have been able to view them, follow me below the fold for 8 we've posted.
My voting guide for California Voters
Thu Nov 02, 2006 at 08:35:29 AM PDT
This election is extremely important. The country is just plain jacked up. The Republican controlled Congress is completely dysfunctional. The civil war we're trapped in the middle of over in Iraq is keeping us from pursuing Al-Qaeda and dealing with nuclear proliferation. Our Governor isn't getting hardly anything done for us. And when he does get something done, it's usually against us. It's time for change in Washington and Sacramento. Good thing we get to have our say on November 7th.
My recommendations are below he flip.
My pledge: To Stop Reading DailyKos, Fri-Mon!!
Wed Nov 01, 2006 at 08:59:43 PM PDT
I know. For most of us,
reading Kos is like crack. Its an addiction. You go through withdrawal, feel that compulsive need to check. But its time to be motivated, and I've got an idea how. I'm going to make a pledge, and I want to get as many people as possible to pledge with me.
I'M NOT GOING TO VISIT, READ, OR DIARY ON DAILY KOS ON FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY, OR MONDAY, UNLESS I GIVE OF MY TIME TO A CAMPAIGN OR GOTV ACTIVITY THAT DAY.
Only another Kossacks would know how odd it would feel not to check Kos at least once a day. And that's why I think this little motivational tool will help keep me honest, be the carrot in front of me to keep me going. Who will join my pledge?? More on things you can do, even if you're homebound, or live in the bluest of blue oases, below the fold.
A Little California McCarthymusik
Mon Oct 30, 2006 at 08:48:58 AM PDT
The late Senator McCarthy is remembered for, among other villainies, waving a sheaf of papers and claiming that he had a list of Communists in the US Government. Curiously, he never revealed that list--one has to wonder why a man so eagerly beavering away in the vinyards of sour grape politics, helping blacklist so many, would protect hundreds of known, identified Communists who'd deeply infiltrated the federal government.
Yes, one must wonder.
But never let it be said that the GOP forgets a useful lesson in slimy, gutter politics. No, like a dog returning to its vomit, this particular stunt was reprised just the other evening, in Southern California.
Google bombing is starting to work
Fri Oct 27, 2006 at 09:16:04 PM PDT
Two days ago, I started to track the
Brian Bilbray Google bomb to see if
Chris Bowers' strategy was having any effect. On Wednesday and Thursday I checked the top 100 links in the Google search results, and the bomb didn't show up. But as of this morning, it was at position 20; a huge jump.
But it's only a start. Search results position 20 position is crap; the clickthrough rate at that position has been estimated at 0.3%. Bilbray now owns the first three positions, which should give him over 60%. So right now, Bilbray's sites should generate over 200 times the hits compared with our bomb.
Our results should improve over the next several days. Right now, most googlers are greeted with a fawning editorial from the Republican San Diego Union Tribune. As the bomb grows in effectiveness, more googlers will learn that Bilbray is the target of a criminal investigation. And like I said, right now the ratio is 200 to 1 against us.
CA-50: Bilbray Investigation Confirmed
Fri Oct 27, 2006 at 03:12:40 PM PDT
A couple weeks ago, Democratic challenger Francine Busby was alerted by CA-50 residents that they had testified before a secret Grand Jury investigating Rep. Brian Bilbray
for perjury and fraud. Today, one of the witnesses courageously
came forward and confirmed it.
CA-50: Rep. Bilbray under criminal investigation by a Grand Jury
Fri Oct 27, 2006 at 01:48:53 PM PDT
The major newspaper in the 50 district here in California, the North County Times, has been following up on
the rumors that Brian Bilbray is under criminal investigation by a grand jury regarding his residency status.
Bilbray claims to be living with his mother in Carlsbad while also owning a house in Imperial Beach and another home in Virginia. His family lives in the home in Virginia.
One of Bilbray's mothers neighbors has come forward and admitted he was subpoenaed by a Grand Jury and gave his testimony in August.
CA -50 Busby vs Bilbray: Bilbray blows gasket
Tue Oct 24, 2006 at 10:26:30 PM PDT
Quick little diary on what is happening in the CA-50 Congressional race.
Democrat Francine Busby is trailing current CA 50 Republican Representative by only a few points in the latest polling (no link provided). I have heard this from a few sources including emails from the Busby campaign.
Vote Bilbray in CA-50 :-)
Tue Oct 24, 2006 at 05:23:04 PM PDT
To the editor:
I have known Francine Busby personally for many years and she is obviously a hard-working, conscientious and principled woman who will devote her time in Washington to the interests of her constituents to the fullest possible extent.
However, I question whether Francine truly has what it takes to follow in the footsteps of Duke Cunningham, Michael Zucchet, Ralph Inzunza, and other southern California politicians who have done so much recently to raise the nation's awareness of our region.

Bringing the Blind Pigs of the GOP to Market
Wed Oct 18, 2006 at 09:12:57 PM PDT
There's a great story in the
Albany Times Union today about John Sweeney (NY-20) and his work to help Jack Abramoff and his sweatshop owning patrons on the Mariana Islands.
There is a lot in the story, but this was my favorite part:
Sweeney was quoted in the Saipan Tribune on Jan. 15 [2001] as saying reports of poor working conditions in the CNMI were overblown, and that he had seen worse sweatshops back home in New York. Carlson said Sweeney was "absolutely not" aware of any severe mistreatment of workers or forced prostitution before he made these comments.
U.S. Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., a longtime champion of legislation to change CNMI wage and immigration laws, traveled to the islands in 1998 [snip].
Problems were obvious "unless you choose not to look at the facts on the ground," Miller said, adding: "A blind pig could run into the human rights violations and the exploitation of workers on the islands."
That sums up the modern Republican Party: Blind Pigs.
And we have three weeks to take them out.
To the jump...
(CA-50th) More Phone Shenanigans from the R's
Fri Oct 13, 2006 at 09:39:12 AM PDT
This just in from a friend in California. Do you have friends and family in the San Diego area? If so, you may want to alert them to this as soon as possible.
The 50th is the race in which Francine Busby (D) is challenging Brian Bilbray (the Republican who replaced Duke Cunningham).
Bilbray's campaign is up to more dirty tricks. They have been "auto dialing" people in the 50th District with a message that sounds like it's a Busby Campaign message. Many of these calls are set to auto-dial late at night, intentionally waking people up.
People are furious, and Busby responds:
CA-R Brian Bilbray being investigated
Thu Oct 12, 2006 at 08:14:57 AM PDT
Rumor in and around San Diego County is that current Congressmen Brian Bilbray (R), the representative of CA-50 is under the crosshairs of San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis.
Brian Bilbray won the Special Election back in June to replace convicted Republican Congressmen Randy "Duke" Cunningham. Bilbray at the time, failed to answer questions regarding his place of residence. Seems that he was using his mother's address in the district, although his primary residence was in Virginia, and another house he owns was in the Imperial Beach area of San Diego that does not fall within the CA-50 district.
At the time the residence issue did not resonate with voters. Seems all anybody cared about on the Republican side was illegal immigration, and the Democrates just didn't get out and vote in mass.
CA-50: The Long Arm of the Law
Wed Oct 11, 2006 at 11:16:36 PM PDT
During the special election to fill Randy "Duke" Cunningham's seat after he was thrown in the slammer for bribery and corruption, there were questions about Brian Bilbray's eligibility to run in California's 50th District -- but he signed all the papers anyhow. It looks like Bilbray's lust for power has made him the target of a Grand Jury investigation.
CA-50:Another Crook: Bilbray being investigated by Grand Jury
Wed Oct 11, 2006 at 07:58:11 PM PDT
cross-posted from Calitics: the progressive community blog for California.
Brian Bilbray has been very quiet recently. Yeah, he's heavily favored in CA-50 in the rematch with Francine Busby, but still you'd think he'd show up somewhere, anywhere in his district. But, according to Words Have Power, he's been hiding out. He's not been updating his web site, and he failed to show up at an AARP-sponsored debate. Strange.
Or maybe not so strange. According to the San Diego County Democratic Party, Bilbray is being investigated a grand jury impaneled by the District Attorney. Follow me over the flip.
Tom Reynolds and his issues with abused minors...
Mon Oct 09, 2006 at 05:16:32 PM PDT
I found
this great story over at
http://whpsocal.blogspot.com
RJB points out that Tom Reynolds (NY-26), Chair for the NRCC, claims he talked to Dennis Hastert about Rep. Mark Foley's sexual instant messaging issues. He claims he should have done more to stop the incident and protect the paiges.
Just recently, he has been running ads against Francine Busby. He has been making claims that she "praised" a teacher who was caught in a "Foley-esque" situation. Busby sets the facts straight in this ad.

Yet, to this day Tom Reynolds signs the checks on those hit pieces that Busby had nothing to do with. Just another sign of how shameful this Republican party has become!
Bilbray, Of The Virginia Bilbrays
Tue Oct 03, 2006 at 10:12:08 PM PDT
Brian Bilbray has never made a secret of
his contempt for California's 50th district. During a landfill controversy in the early nineties, a Bilbray aide said, "The trash can pile up on the streets of North County, as far as Brian is concerned." In fact, Bilbray refuses to even live in the district he says he's representing.
