Senator McCaskill: Sexism, politics, and the Republican play book

Thu Jan 24, 2008 at 12:54:33 PM PDT

It never ceases to amaze me the tactics that other women will use to try and drag Hillary Clinton down.  Here's an excerptfrom an article summarizing Senator McCaskill's comments on Senator Clinton

"Missouri voters are won and lost on passion, who is motivated to come out and vote and if people are motivated for change, there is a good result. If Republicans are motivated, whether it's fair or not, no one motivates the Republicans in Missouri like Hillary Clinton."

The GOP, she said, was "in chaos. The only thing I can see right now that excites the very conservative base of the Republican Party in Missouri is coming out to vote against Hillary Clinton and that worries me."

George W. Bush, environmentalist?

Tue Nov 14, 2006 at 08:18:49 AM PDT

Steven Hayward, a Resident Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, reported this week on NPR's Living on Earth that the president has been striking a different tune on energy and environmental issues of late.

Mike Allen [from Time] reported that he was talking to a senior White House official who said that Bush was getting ready to do a 180 on climate change and describe it as in the old cliché as a Nixon in China moment. The actual quote that appeared was that only two oil men could get all the players to the table, including the oil and auto industry, to broker some large and grand compromise on this.

And I've heard separately from people who have had casual lunches or dinners with Bush recently that one of the things he's changed his mind about was environmental issues.

MO-Sen, MT-Sen: Bush killed GOP momentum

Mon Nov 13, 2006 at 03:35:05 PM PDT

Thanks George!

We couldn't have done it without you.

There's plenty of evidence to suggest that President Bush may have been the deciding factor that killed the GOP's momentum in some key Senate races over the last week. One Republican consultant is convinced that Bush's last-minute visit to Missouri on behalf of ousted GOP Sen. Jim Talent did the incumbent in. According to the network exit polls, Democrat Claire McCaskill crushed Talent among those late-breaking voters who decided in the final three days (a full 11 percent of the electorate). Bush also made a last-minute trip to Montana, where anecdotal evidence indicates the president's rally for Republican Conrad Burns stopped the incumbent's momentum in Billings.

Thanks Rush -- Probably No MO Without You

Wed Nov 08, 2006 at 07:40:05 AM PDT

Dear Rush -- Just think. You can face the day knowing you probably provided the extra oomph that got Claire McCaskill over the hump to win election to the U.S. Senate from Missouri and (we hope and pray) give Senate control to the Dems. This Mid-Term election gave us many moments that revealed the depraved mean spirit at the heart of right wing Republicanism, but none so repulsive and revealing as the sight of your corpulent body floundering about in imitation of Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's. America saw this spectacle and, in the ears of some, were the words of lawyer Joseph Welch directed at Senator Joseph McCarthy during the televised Army hearings: "Have you no decency?" And so began the downfall of another bully and a turning point away from America's last great period of darkness.

Holy Crap - McCaskill is declaring!!!!

Tue Nov 07, 2006 at 11:00:06 PM PDT

Holy crap - she is declaring.

"You have elected . . . "

Missouri has spoken.

I really don't know what to think.

Thank you God.
Truly thank you God.

"For those who did not vote for me, I will stand up for you too!

Show me bitches!!

MO-SEN: Good omens so far

Tue Nov 07, 2006 at 06:50:40 PM PDT

Here's some of the county results so far.

Barton and Dade County are completely reporting.

Barton County goes from 79/19 Blunt in 2004 to 71/25 Talent.

Dade County goes from 72/27 Blunt to 61/34 Talent.

As well, Claire is only down 6 while results are in from what should be Talent's strongholds.

Oh yes, 20K in from St. Charles County and Talent is up 50/48. If you're from Missouri, you'd know more about the significance of a Republican stronghold being so weak for Talent.

More under the fold, including updates

A McCaskill Volunteer on Election Eve

Mon Nov 06, 2006 at 07:52:13 PM PDT

[This is a diary in the purest sense: nothing earth-shattering to be found here.]

Well, T minus eight hours until the big GOTV slog tomorrow (I've committed to working all day, from six a.m. until seven p.m.).  I'd love to say I was really looking forward to it, charged up for a glorious battle to retake democracy.  But I'm basically a lazy sod at heart (shocker, given my screen name, I know) and I'm not a morning person either.  The idea of getting up at 5:30 to go walk god knows how many miles knocking on doors just doesn't thrill me, I confess.  But I'm going to grin and bear it because I know it's an important race, and I keep hearing about what a great "GOTV machine" the GOP has in this state--so we've got to do what we can to counter it.

I'll be looking forward to getting to the end of the long day, hitting the local Democratic watering hole with the rest of the volunteers, and tossing a few back as we watch the returns come in on the big screen.

Good hunting, everyone.

MO-Sen-McCaskill on my Mind-How to Help Claire-& Missouri !

A message from Don Reed, stem cell activist extraordinaire, and ordinary American. - www.stemcellbattles.com - Please send this to any disability advocate and senior advocate you know, whether or not they live in Missouri! Ask them to send Don's plea to those who can reach seniors and the disabled-voices too long ignored and left out of our democratic process.  Here is Don's message -

Imagine the struggle a paralyzed person has to go through, just to get out of bed. My son Roman Reed is paralyzed, a quadriplegic. And maybe he can't close his fingers, and maybe his legs don't work.

But nothing on earth will stop him from voting tomorrow.

MO Sen. Talent: 42 bills to cut $10M in pesticide import duties

Sun Nov 05, 2006 at 09:55:40 AM PDT

In 2005-2006, Sen. Jim Talent (R-MO) proposed 42 bills that if approved would reduce by millions of dollars the import duties paid by large corporations on specific chemicals used to manufacture pesticides.

Most of these trade amendments list German chemical giants BASF Corp. or Bayer CropScience as the "proponent," in reports issued by the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) that estimate over $10M per year in U.S. Customs revenue loss.

A classic example of pork barrel politics, this election cycle Talent has received over $600,000 in campaign contributions from the agribusiness sector, almost 25% more than even Senate Agriculture Committee head Saxby Chambliss (R-GA).

Been Too Long

Sat Nov 04, 2006 at 07:57:07 PM PDT

Cross-posted at my blog DemWrite.

If I had to come up with a reason for my lack of posting, it's pretty simple, really. If I'm going to post something, I want it to be more substantial than simply saying, "What Keith said...." Keith Olbermann's special comments seem to be the words I want to say, but he seems to be able to put them together in a much more forceful way than I can. That's not to say that I don't think I'm a good writer. I do. Keith is just in a class all his own, the Edward R. Murrow of this generation.

I'm going to try to talk about a few issues that are in the news as far as Missouri politics (a lot of it is national in scope), as well as Kansas, our neighbor to the west.

Dive in after the flip.

Senator...YOU"RE ON NOTICE

Fri Nov 03, 2006 at 02:33:56 PM PDT

The following Senator are pimples on the ass of the body politic. They need to be purged from the political landscape for being water carriers, sycophants, and apologists for the Bush Administration. They saw wrong and did not righted, Saw despair and looked the other way. That yearned for power without obligation and they forgot who they truly worked for.

Senator Jim Talent: Government by the rich, for the rich.

Fri Nov 03, 2006 at 01:13:39 PM PDT

Jim Talent sent one of his flyers in the mail today. The latest, from the National Federation of Independent Businesses, proves that Senator Talent believes in government by the rich, for the rich. On the other hand, we believe in government by the people for the people.

MO-Sen: Talent taking Fed contractors, former lobbying client money

Fri Nov 03, 2006 at 06:39:48 AM PDT

xposted ePluribus Media Community

The Talent for Senate committee has taken contributions from 11 different executives of UniGroup, Inc., a $2B Missouri-based federal contractor whose biggest client is the Department of Defense.

Because Sen. Jim Talent (R-MO) is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, which oversees defense funding and procurement, the contributions violate Senate ethics guidelines and, potentially, campaign finance laws that prohibit candidates from accepting donations by persons performing contract work with the federal government.

UniGroup's current president has personally donated over $4000 to the Senator's campaigns, including $500 on 12/20/2001 while Talent was registered  with Arent, Fox, Kintner, Plotkin, and Kahn as a lobbyist for his company.

It's time to ask Talent if he's a "Rush Limbaugh Republican"

Tue Oct 31, 2006 at 09:11:26 PM PDT

Like many Americans, I was incensed beyond words by Rush Limbaugh's absurdly insensitive comments directed towards Michael J. Fox, words which he still stands by, despite the best efforts of the media to pretend that he apologized.

But I have no use for that man anymore, or for any rage that his words inspire in me.  He's a clown, a buffoon whose words should be mocked rather than seriously contemplated or debated.

Of course, there's also this response ad, which misses the point entirely, given that Fox was NOT commenting on the proposed Amendment.  He was targeting Jim Talent and his voting record specifically.  So, the question is now burning in my head ... the question that, if the roles were reversed, every talking head on TV would be pounding down McCaskill's throat if, oh say, Michael Moore had pulled a similar stunt.

THE QUESTION:  Does Jim Talent stand by the comments of Rush Limbaugh, or will he publicly denounce such hateful rhetoric?  Is he a Rush Limbaugh Republican?

Having a blast on the Repugs dime

Mon Oct 30, 2006 at 04:51:44 PM PDT

In August 04, Bush Jr. came to the small town in which I live for a political rally and I, although a Yellow Dog Democrat through and through, saw this as an opportunity for my kids to see a sitting president speak (as much as I dislike him). It was something they will remember the rest of their lives and was important from my standpoint.

Tickets were available at the local GOP headquarters. My wife and I went down there signed up and got 4 tickets.

Little did I realize it at the time, but that simple act has given me hours of enjoyment since. I am now part a targeted member of the GOP GOTV effort here in Missouri.

Amendment 2: The Democrats' Albatross?

Mon Oct 30, 2006 at 09:20:33 AM PDT

Much virtual ink has been dedicated to the "Big 3" U.S. Senate races - Missouri, Tennessee and Virginia - that, come November 7, may tilt the chamber to the Democrats. I sincerely hope this happens for the sake of our country.

But I'm afraid it won't - and you'll have Missourians to blame for it.

Poll

On election day, Amendment 2 will:

68%30 votes
18%8 votes
13%6 votes

| 44 votes | Vote | Results

MO Sen: Playing the hand we've dealt

Sun Oct 29, 2006 at 01:06:29 PM PDT

This is the week where we play the hand that we've dealt.  I subscribe to the theory that most people who are going to vote have made up their minds by this time.  It appears that by a slight margin, Missouri voters favor Claire McCaskill over Jim Talent for the US Senate.  The final week will be consumed with keeping voters' intensity levels high and then helping them get to the polls.
