Orrin Hatch and John McCain, Hipsters

Wed Apr 23, 2008 at 06:52:02 PM PDT

Uh...

Not content to sit on the sidelines, longtime senator and one-time presidential hopeful Orrin Hatch has penned a song for his Senate buddy John McCain in hopes of helping his White House bid.

Really, he did.

Hatch - a Utah Republican who won a platinum award for helping co-write lyrics for a song that sold more than a million records - crafted a tune called "Together Forever" for the presumptive Republican nominee.

"Forever together / America is the land we're fighting for / There's a time in history / for a hero's destiny / together forever more," says Hatch's song, co-written with composer Philip Springer, famous for the Christmas song, "Santa Baby"...

"We'll see Barack Obama's Bruce Springsteen endorsement and raise them an Orrin Hatch," a [McCain] spokesman said.

What do the kids think?

[A]ccording to Hardball, while Hatch's office says he was aiming for an upbeat song that would appeal to the youth vote, the song doesn't mimic anything found on the Top 40 - or even the next 40.

Jason Mattera, spokesman for the conservative Young America's Foundation, says the lyrics are fine but the beats and tempo are "not appealing to young people.

"Hatch's heart is in the right place, but he has the wrong decade," Mattera says, noting that the message to attract young people is that liberalism oppresses people, stifles freedom and causes "pervasive destitution. I give him credit for trying, though," Mattera adds.

What, are you surprised he didn't say "I like it, it's got a good beat, you can march to it, I give it an 86?"

Really, though, it's hard to blame McCain (who was born in 1936) or Hatch (who was born two years earlier).  Many people, myself included, think that one's love of music is heavily shaped by the music you experience as a child.  And look at was was happening in music in 1936:

George Gershwin was still alive, Cole Porter was in his prime, Rodgers and Hart were collaborating, Leadbelly published "Goodnight, Irene," Count Basie and Nat Cole began their careers, and Benny Goodman was selling a bunch of records.  It wouldn't be accurate to say, however, that Benny Goodman was tearing up the charts, because the Billboard Charts hadn't been created.  In fact, the 45 single and the 33 1/3 LP hadn't been invented yet.

It wasn't a good year to be a Russian, as Uncle Joe Stalin was still collectivizing and purging, but it was a good year for Russian music: Prokofiev debuted Peter and the Wolf, Shastakovich wrote his Symphony No. 4 in C Minor, and Rachmaninoff wrote his Symphony No. 3.

That's all good stuff.  But other than maybe Cole Porter, not much of that music is considered particularly hip by today's standards.  So one can partially forgive Orin Hatch and John McCain for not being very hip; they didn't grow up in time for it to be easy for them to be hip.

For fun, though, lets look at what was happening musically in 1961, the year Barack Obama was born:

In 1961 the charts—yes, they had been around for some time by 1961—were topped by some great songs like Ben E. King's "Stand by Me" and "Spanish Harlem," the Miracles' "Shop Around," Patsy Cline's "I Fall to Pieces," the Marvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman," Etta James' "At Last," Roy Orbison's "Crying" and Ray Charles' "Hit the Road, Jack."  John Coltrane released "My Favorite Things," Oliver Nelson released "The Blues and the Abstract Truth" and Dave Brubeck released "Take Five."

In 1961 Bob Dylan traveled to NYC to meet Woody Guthrie, and the Beatles were playing in Hamburg.

Oh, there was another significant musical event in 1961; the recordings of an almost forgotten delta bluesman by the name of Robert Johnson were released on the album King of the Delta Blues Singers.  These old scratchy recordings were a big inspiration to future rock and rollers such as The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton/Cream, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin.

The almost forgotten recordings, by the way, had mostly been recorded in 1936.

Obama Evening News & Roundup -- St. Patrick's Day!

Mon Mar 17, 2008 at 04:12:20 PM PDT

Today is St. Patrick's Day. As the New York Times reported yesterday, the heavy hitters are concerned that the race will continue to drag on, nothing will get resolved, and John McCain will benefit because people would see him as above the fray. We know that there was a high-level meeting recently between Barack Obama and Al Gore. What I'm hoping is that people will come together, meet with Hillary Clinton, and tell her that she has two weeks to get out of the race with dignity.

But there were rumors that Edwards would, in fact, endorse Hillary. But that was simply the opinion of one talking head. As of this writing, there was nothing on Drudge or Raw Story indicating that at all. All of this is conjecture at this point. We need to stay focused, keep doing what we are doing, and let the chips fall where they may. We need to operate under the assumption that there will be a primary fight until the convention, unless Hillary or Obama throws in the towel.

If Bob Murray is Satan Incarnate, is Orrin Hatch the Anti-Christ? (with poll)

Thu Mar 06, 2008 at 08:29:16 PM PDT

I am NOT given to gratuitous swearing.  However, god damn it all anyway.  54+ dead in Baghdad, 140+ injured.  8 dead in Jerusalem.  The dems don't have a nominee.  Utah ended its stupid ass legislative session (more on THAT forthcoming).

And this afternoon, competing news releases flying from the committee chair, Ted Kennedy, and the ranking member, Mike Enzi.

Because
Kerry Allred
Don Erickson
Luis Hernandez
Juan Carlos Payan
Brandon Phillips
Manuel Sanchez
Gary Jensen
Dale Ray Black
Brandon Kimber

are DEAD.

And it is the fault of Bob Murray, MHSA, Elaine Chao and w*.

Not just Smith - Republicans AOK with segregationists now

Tue Dec 18, 2007 at 01:39:39 PM PDT

I always thought that the 2002 purge of Trent Lott from his Majority Leader position had a strangeness to it.  I was fond of telling a joke at the time that Lott was condemned for praising Strom Thurmond, but Thurmond was not condemned for BEING Strom Thurmond.  There was this sense that the demotion somehow proved that we as a nation were understanding our past troubles with race, and we're moving on in a spirit of unity and tolerance, no longer condoning that kind of bigotry.

Five years later, the story has completlely changed.

God Bless Orrin Hatch ...

OR-Sen: Killing a Dream: Gordon Smith Votes Against Innocent Children

Fri Oct 26, 2007 at 01:01:51 PM PDT

Steve Novick is a committed progressive taking on Gordon Smith for the U.S. Senate. You can find out more about the fighter with the hard left hook at his website and help support his campaign at ActBlue.

Question: When it comes to the innocent children of undocumented immigrants, who is less caring, less thoughtful, and more willing to pander to the extreme right than Orrin Hatch, Sam Brownback and Trent Lott?

Answer: Oregon Senator Gordon Smith.

On Wednesday, Gordon Smith filibustered the DREAM Act, designed to give a limited group of children of undocumented immigrants a chance to go to college, serve in the military and perhaps earn legal status.

Choice for Me, Not Thee: Thompson and Delay on Terri Schiavo

Tue Oct 23, 2007 at 12:11:11 PM PDT

As Fred Thompson's discussion of the Terri Schiavo case again highlighted this week, the so-called conservative "culture of life" contains a personal exemption.  That is, when it comes to abortion, stem cell research and other such issues, the culture warriors of the right fervently oppose personal choice and potential medical breakthroughs - until they or someone they care about badly needs them.  Then, as the likes of Fred Thompson, Tom Delay and Orrin Hatch show, the Republican mantra quickly becomes pro-choice for me, but not for thee.

Republicans hail Ahmadinejad for gay-free Iran

Mon Sep 24, 2007 at 01:09:09 PM PDT

AP -- New York -- Leading Republicans excoriated Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad today for what it characterized as threatening statements against Israel, for denying the historical veracity of the Holocaust, and for pursuing nuclear weapons for Iran, but reserved praise for Ahmadinejad's claim that Iran does not have any homosexuals.

"Much as I think the little bugger is a raving lunatic," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, "and as much as I think we need to bomb his country into miniscule, carbonized fragments as soon as humanly possible, it is quite a pleasing revelation to hear that his country has managed to solve the G-A-Y problem.  Huzzah, Mahmoud.  Huzzah indeed."

Republicans angry at Bush over healthcare for children

Fri Sep 21, 2007 at 09:24:51 AM PDT

If one wants any proof that the years of tireless advocacy for healthcare reform and protecting the rights of children have paid some dividends, one need look no further than the Republican outrage over Bush's plan to veto the pending State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).  Years have shifted the Overton window to the point where Republicans have to at least pretend to care about sick children.

That's right.

Republican outrage.

In defense of federal spending on behalf of children.

Congress Coulda Made History for a Good Reason for Once: No Taxation Without Representation!

Wed Sep 19, 2007 at 04:27:16 AM PDT

I was too optimistic in taking down our "No Taxation Without Representation" sign in our front yard last week.  I'm a D.C. resident.  I know for those outside the Beltway, this may have been barely a blip on the radar of Congressional failures, but for me it was a big deal.  Yesterday, Republicans blocked the Senate from taking up the most promising effort in decades to get D.C. residents a voting representative in Congress.  This wasn't even a vote to give us a vote.  This was just a vote to simply move the bill forward.  Congress could have made history by ending D.C. disenfranchisement.  Instead, it just added another embarrassing chapter to its failures.

The MoveOn Ad (What I Would Say to Orrin Hatch)

Wed Sep 12, 2007 at 10:30:51 AM PDT

I debated for a bit whether to write this diary- there have certainly been enough diaries in the last couple of days related to the MoveOn ad attacking General Petraeus and his report. But what finally burst the dam and made me decide to write my own response to the MoveOn ad was comments made by a Republic senator, Orrin Hatch (R-Utah).

What if Orrin Hatch replaces Gonzo?

Mon Aug 27, 2007 at 11:57:36 AM PDT

Last April, Tim Russert asked Utah Senator Orrin Hatch if he would accept a Bush appointment as Attorney General.  After the customary smokescreens, Senator Hatch said:

Well, I’ve irritated the chairman of the committee just this morning. It’d be really tough for me to get confirmed, I’m sure. But the fact is, of course, anybody would serve this country. I would serve this country any way I could. But, but they’re not going to pick me. But the point is, you know, it’s up to the president.

That's an interesting excess of buts - but it's pretty clear that Sen. Hatch would 'graciously and humbly' accept such a chance to serve his country.  Of course there are some questions that such a nomination would raise.  First, and foremost, would a Hatch nomination well serve Bush/Cheney and the Republican party?

HATCH will be the new AG (w/ poll)

Mon Aug 27, 2007 at 08:09:14 AM PDT

I am writing this brief diary entry in order to spark discussion. The wisest political choice for the President Bush would be to nominate Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) to replace Gonzales. It would be a smooth confirmation and would make Bush appear to be changing his errors. I do not necessarily agree with Hatch's personal politics; however, I do not doubt his honorable service as a US Senator. And, I believe he would bring a renew respect for the law at the Justice Department.

The Crandall Canyon Mine: Business as Usual

Wed Aug 22, 2007 at 07:17:35 AM PDT

Bob Murray wants to continue mining near the Crandall Canyon coal mine in Utah as six unreachable miners' bodies are still warm. Governor John Huntsman (R) reacted:

"That's totally unacceptable. There will not be business as usual until there is closure."

Huntsman went on:

"Furthermore, if it takes every dollar this guy has in his bank account, he needs to bring closure to this darned thing. We've got families of six good people who are currently sitting in that mine."

Not Murray, nor any coal mine owner/operator, will like the sound of that.

A letter from Orin Hatch

Thu Aug 16, 2007 at 07:00:17 PM PDT

The congressional repug loyalists have their position papers and talking points all lined out in anticipation of the September Iraq media event report.

In the best spirit of "know your enemy," I sent an email to my Senators asking that they please explain why they continue to support the "war" in Iraq while 70% of the US population wants us out.  This week, Orin Hatch responded with a form letter.

Some interesting points are below the fold ...

Attached to this letter was a copy of the communiqué from the Whitehouse entitled “Iraq Fact Check: Responding to Key Myths,” that was issued on July 11, 2007.   More about this one in a latter diary.

You don’t take the punching bag out of the gym

Tue Jul 31, 2007 at 04:48:52 AM PDT

Many analysts and bloggers are all hopped up this week about the parade of rats leaving the perceived-as-sinking ship, SS Alberto Gonzales. Representative Adam Putnam, Chair of the House Republican Caucus, said the attorney general’s loss of credibility “diminishes the justice department.” Fox “News” anchor Chris Wallace announced on Sunday that no one would come on his show to defend AG AG. Senator Arlen “Mumbles” Specter has apparently given the White House a deadline of high noon today to clean up the barf that the attorney general left all over a Senate hearing room last week. (If they refuse? Senator Mumbles will no doubt threaten to be very displeased at some point in the future, after additional deliberation, but let’s not be too hasty.) Even a sanctimonious shill like Senator Orrin Hatch slipped up on Sunday and admitted that Fredo has a credibility problem.

But if we have learned nothing this year, we have learned that reports of Fat Albert’s imminent demise are about as valuable as Dick “Death Throes” Cheney’s assessments of the Iraqi insurgency.

Our troops deserve an up or down vote

Wed Jul 11, 2007 at 09:35:48 PM PDT

Has there been one diary up on the recommend list today about the travesty that occurred in the senate?  Are we so immune to the screwing over that our troops take day in and day out that we are willing to let this slide?

As much as I hate Bush there are other issues besides impeachment.  Impeachment is only useful as a way to end this war.  And be not mistaken that ending this war and what it has done to our military should be priority one.

Remember when we heard to the point of nausea (ad nauseum) about how extreme Republican judges deserved an up or down vote.

Well evidently our troops don't deserve the same courtesy and now Republicans are playing procedural games with our troops.

On the flip...
