Is that a Terrorist or a Conservative speaking? (Quiz)
Mon Aug 04, 2008 at 08:28:56 AM PDT
An interesting topic on Fark (it's not news = it's Fark) came up in a thread named "Interviews with three professional pick-up artists at Right Wing News... wait, what?". It was noted that the article says...
Although I did want to do a follow-up, given that I have a mostly male audience...
...and it was noted of one picture that if you "shave these guys, keep them out of the sun, and make sure the US flags you give them are flame-retardant... you'd have a hard time telling from a photo whether you were looking at Kandahar or Kansas."
That led to the creation of this: Is that a Terrorist or Conservative speaking? A quiz.
Ten quotes. Who said them (and I know, it's hard to tell conservatives from terrorists anyway, but have a try anyhow)? Follow the link to the quick quiz above. It shouldn't take more than two minutes unless you're cheating!

Quiz about Islamic History
Thu Sep 13, 2007 at 09:04:17 PM PDT
Seven months ago I posted a quiz on Islamic "stuff" and I am back to school, teaching Islamic material this semester, and thought I might drop a quiz on this list in honour of the first night of Ramadan. These are the questions that are not going to be on the quiz I am going to give my class next week (or at least very few of them will be. I really don't know -- I still have to write the quiz). Honestly, the reason I have all these extra questions floating around is that I thought I needed an exam for last night's class, and it turned out I need it for next week. So I have a whole extra week's worth of lectures from which to draw questions.
Take the quiz, and take the poll. Tell me how you did.

YearlyKos Pub Quiz: Update!
Fri Jul 20, 2007 at 11:22:34 AM PDT
First off, thanks to those who have volunteered to help out with my running of the YearlyKos Political Pub Quiz, our first annual attempt to determine who are the biggest geeks in the blogosphere.
A few updates worth sharing today:
- Among those who have pledged to field teams of 4-8 for the competition are the folks from ActBlue, MyDD, OpenLeft, TechPresident and an effort from the leading Connecticut blogs. Are you smarter than them? Put a team together and prove it.
- We are being sponsored by the DSCC and DCCC. As a result, the first question will be "How awesome is Chuck Schumer?" A minimum of 250 words will be required. There will be no second question until everyone has answered the first question in a satisfactory answer.
- Because I am a big fan of the World Series of Pop Culture, I will be adding an on-stage, oral "finals" best-of-three round for the top two teams coming out of the written rounds. If you're familiar with the show, you know the format -- there will be a lists of things ("Name all 13 original colonies" -- but harder), and representatives from each team will have to complete the list, going back and forth until one team fails.
- There will be alcohol available for sale.
The event will be held Thursday night, immediately following the keynote speeches, in the main room. Any questions about the questions? Here are the basics, but ask away.

I'm sure that some of you will know the answer to this little one-item quiz immediately. If you do, please be a sport and hold off an hour or so to give your fellow Kossacks a chance to scratch their heads a bit. In the meantime, all guesses (serious or tongue-in-cheek) are welcomed!

Quiz about Islamic "stuff"
Tue Feb 06, 2007 at 10:02:15 PM PDT
I have been writing quizzes and exams for the last couple of days, so it is spilling over onto Dailykos. Here is a quiz on Islamic topics. How will you do?
These are not the most difficult questions, and do not require really specialized knowledge (except maybe the last two). They probably will be a bit of a challenge here for most people (of course, Juan Cole may lurk around here, and there are probably others around here who are scholars in the field – I would definitely not consider myself a scholar in this! – so I hope you are nice – remember I teach undergraduates only). Enjoy. And take the poll to let me know how you did (the answers are at the end).
Belief-O-Matic. Where Do You Fall on The Spectrum? (w/ Poll)
Fri Nov 10, 2006 at 10:48:05 AM PDT
I was cleaning out my office this morning, and I ran across a slip of paper I'd gotten from someone at an Al-Anon meeting a while back. So I typed in the URL and pulled up a site called
BeliefNet.
I don't really go to church or anything but I still consider myself to be a spiritual person, so I found a lot of interesting things on this site. Especially a quiz they call Belief-O-Matic. You answer a series of questions and then they tell you which church, faith, set of beliefs you are most aligned with according to your answers on the quiz.
I wasn't surprised at what it told me, but I enjoyed reading through some of the links to other religions etc.
A fun political quiz
Thu Sep 21, 2006 at 11:26:13 AM PDT
If you are intersted, and if you have 5 minutes, you can take a short political quiz to see if you are as liberal as you think you are.
The quiz consists of eight questions. four question are personal, and four questions are economic. I took the quiz, and found out that I am a left leaning centrist.
This quiz is run by the Advocates for self government. I think you will enjoy taking this quiz. You might even find out some little surprising things about yourself.

Quiz: Are you an Authoritarian, or a Godless Liberal?
Wed Jul 12, 2006 at 08:38:32 AM PDT
The most fascinating thing for me the last couple days has been reading the comments about the new book diaried here:
23% of us are fucked!
And then seeing the interview with the author in the clip on C&L has been a rather nice affirmation that I'm not a total paranoid about the Bushco base. I'm not totally off the wall to be having these thoughts about our societies; UK, US, Canada, Australia. Holland had a Conservative government as well; they just resigned over an immigration scandal. The world seems to be on a conservative trend. If those studies are correct, thats a whole lot of sheep....errrr authoritarian followers...
Secular Fundamentalists and Jumbo Shrimp
Thu Jul 06, 2006 at 06:26:33 AM PDT
Take the "secular fundamentalist" who said what pop quiz !Everybody seems concerned about issues of church/state separation these days, but how good are you at parsing the speech of politicians and religious leaders whose use coded language that attacks [sometimes unintentionally] the principal of church/state separation ?
What if sme of those politicians and religious doing that were asociated with the left ? What if it was actually hard to separate their language from that of Christian right leaders ?
This is no mere rhetorical question. Read on. Heh, heh...>
What if theocracy - or 'theocracy lite' were being advanced slyly, as a concept, in another guise and you didn't even notice because it was so slyly hidden ?
[note: the image above is not an example of 'slyly hidden']
Well, theocracy - or the 'lite' version of it - is indeed being advanced in another guise, and sometimes the people doing that don't even know they are doing it.
Language is viral.
Ideas are viral.
Here's a viral idea that has infected the minds of many - including many on the left.
It goes like this :
My Journey - Becoming a Centrist
Tue May 30, 2006 at 08:15:52 PM PDT
I got this email from a friend of mine the other day, "You might enjoy this... an online political quiz . It takes less than a minute, but it will help you look at politics in a whole new way. It's the World's Smallest Political Quiz at: www.theadvocates.org/quiz.html.
You'll be asked just 10 questions, and then it instantly tells you where you stand politically. It shows your position as a red dot on a 'political map' so you'll see exactly where you score. The most interesting thing about the Quiz is that it goes beyond the Democrat, Republican, Independent. The Quiz has gotten a lot of praise. The Washington Post said it has 'gained respect as a valid measure of a person's political leanings.'"
