A Proposal to Reform the BCS (college football)
Mon Dec 03, 2007 at 02:03:41 PM PDT
Hey sports fans. As political as the BCS selection is getting, I think this is a perfectly appropriate place to showcase an idea I've been working on. A new and improved BCS system for college football. One that will please the fans, the players, the coaches, and the people counting their money after it is all over.
To start off, we're under a few constraints. The major bowls and the major conferences are never going to give up the money and power they currently posses, and the NCAA doesn't seem interested in stepping in to change anything. So we have to work through the current system, doing something the conferences and the bowls will endorse. In order to be fair, we must leave room for non-BCS schools, however. Taking those things into mind, I came up with a system that I think would no only make the game more fair, but would also make more money for the big bowls, ensuring their cooperation.

Kansas vs. Missouri: Let the Border "War" Commence
Sat Nov 24, 2007 at 09:35:40 AM PDT
Yes, I know - it's not terribly political, and it would be a severe stretch for me to try and make it so. Of course historically there's hardly anything more political within this country than the Border War between the Free Staters and the Border Ruffians. But let's be frank about today's events:
It's a football game, and it's being played by kids that are 18-22 years old. The fans are not playing the game, nor are the coaches, the school attendees, the Kansas/Missouri residents, the relatives, or their ancestors. It's the kids doing their best to represent their school, nothing more. When all it's said and done, when the game is over and the victor takes all the bragging rights and trash talk to unprecedented new heights for years and generations to come, in the end it is nothing more than a game.
The Real Story Behind BC's Student Athletes
Tue Nov 06, 2007 at 05:57:52 AM PDT
Are there examples of big-time football schools that are having both athletic and academic success this season? The most obvious answer is Boston College. After its first loss this past weekend, BC’s football team is still ranked #1 in the ACC and #8 in the national polls. And its football players graduate at higher rates than any other team ranked in the top 25. Unfortunately, upon further research, we discovered that BC's current football team isn’t exactly the model example we were looking for.

psst....Cal's gonna be in the top 4....no really...Might even end up #3 or even #2. It was the Saturday night massacre on the top 20.

Since there's nothing important going on in the world right now, (Quagmire in Iraq, arrogant, incompetent "Idiot In Chief, embarrassingly inept national media, Satan as Vice President, etc.),I thought I'd take a moment to shine the light on another incompetent entity: Notre Dame football.
Is the NCAA Really Committed to Academic Reform?
Wed Sep 26, 2007 at 06:04:03 AM PDT
Three years ago, the NCAA created a new accountability system designed to hold athletic teams accountable for their poor graduation rates. But, as Higher Ed Watch's Lindsey Luebchow discusses, there "academic progress" goals have little teeth to them.
A Buckeye's Confession
Mon Jan 08, 2007 at 09:04:17 PM PDT
As I write this, Ohio State is about four minutes from the end of a thorough trouncing in the BCS championship game. It's a bummer, to be sure. I was born in Columbus, lived there most of my life and graduated from The Ohio State University. In other words, as the saying goes, I bleed Scarlet and Grey.
But there's a little piece of me that's glad because of the outcome.

Here's my weekly diary where everyone can talk about sports, and anything related to sports. Up first tonight, the aftermath of this weekend's College Football...
What's your Michigan-Ohio problem?
Sat Nov 18, 2006 at 05:02:05 PM PDT
Ohio State over U of Michigan, 42-39. "Aaaaaagh!!!"
Bo Schembechler, where are you now that we need you?
I never watch football, but this was a little too compelling to miss. Watched it in the Michigan Union Tap Room, people were not happy about the results, but oh well...
Vent away, ossacksKay. Hey!

"Men, this is war! I don't care anything about the national championship or the Big Ten championship. But if we win this game today and afterward, if the good Lord says, 'Woody, it's your time,' I'll say, 'Lord, I'm ready!'"
--Ohio State Coach Woody Hayes, speech to his team before playing Michigan in 1975
I usually wait till Sunday night to do the weekly sports diary, that way I get the aftermath. However, I thought I would make an exception this time. Today's matchup between
#1 Ohio State & #2 Michigan has been hyped for weeks. The death of longtime Michigan coach
Bo Schembechler yesterday, at the age of 77, added even more subtext to the game. Add to all of this, that depending on who wins & by how much, the team that loses might be able to hold on to #2 and guarantee a rematch in the BCS National Championship game, although #7 Rutgers is still out there as an undefeated with a game against West Virginia still on the schedule....
call your shot - michigan v. ohio state
Fri Nov 17, 2006 at 12:57:31 PM PDT
first off, in case you hadn't heard,
bo schembechler died today.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Bo Schembechler, who became one of college football's great coaches in two decades at Michigan, died Friday after taping a TV show on the eve of the Wolverines' No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown with perennial rival Ohio State. He was 77.
Schembechler collapsed during the taping of a television show in Southfield and was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. His death at 11:42 a.m. was confirmed by Mike Dowd, chief investigator for the medical examiner's office in Oakland County.
will this have any effect on tomorrow's game? let's talk about the game.
Bo Schembechler Dies After Collapse
Fri Nov 17, 2006 at 09:31:18 AM PDT
While the Murtha/Hoyer fight might be the talk of the liberal blogosphere, the rest of the country, even on the political shows, is talking about the Michigan-Ohio State game tomorrow.
Now the AP is reporting that Michigan icon Bo Schembechler just died after collapsing the other day. As sick as this sounds, there's no way Michigan loses now.

The Urgent Question of the Week!!!!!!!!!!!! (With Poll)
Mon Nov 13, 2006 at 08:16:11 PM PDT
Ohio State
Or
Michigan
The looming clash of these titans is delaying election recounts in Ohio after all. One of the great rivalries in college football has a first this week. It is the first time these two teams play ranked as #1 and #2 in this long, bitter rivalry. As a Hawkeye, I'm an interloper on advancing this issue, but hey I've got to make amends as I boldly predicted the Hawkeyes to be National Champions a few months back http://www.dailykos.com/...
It should be a great game. Vote below the fold:
College Football Week 7 Open Thread

Ok, ok. One has to take a break from politics every now and then. What better way to do it than to watch college football (especially since every team that I could imagine even having a slight urge to cheer for in baseball never even made the playoffs).
How how bout some of the closer games from today?
West Virginia leading Syracuse 17-14 at halftime.
Wake Forest leading N. C. State 22-14 at halftime after exchanging leads.
Iowa only up on Indiana 21-14 at halftime.
Miami (OH) at Buffalo postponed due to snow.
So...chat away!

we had our opponent down we sometimes would bring
in the subs. Or we would bury our opponent because
rankings were based on score differential.
Oklahoma Fans Threaten Official's Family After Loss To Oregon
Tue Sep 19, 2006 at 08:11:54 PM PDT

I thought this might be a nice change of pace if you like Football, and especially if you're tired of the wrist-slitting "Gallup" diaries. This past weekend Notre Dame got their ass kicked by Michigan, probably ending Brady Quinn's Heisman hopes. However, the officials took center stage last in at least 2 games. Even with video review, the officiating crews imitated blind men to the point the University of Oklahoma is asking the for the game against Oregon to be nullified.
The President of the University of Oklahoma, former Democratic Governor & Senator David Boren, sent a letter to the Big 12 commissioner, in which he says...
...The Big 12 should request that the game should not go into the record books as a win or a loss by either team in light of the level of officiating mistakes,
