Public education has been a part of the United States since its founding, but it became compulsory everywhere around 1900. Today, public education is still mostly controlled and administered by state and local governments. Local boards of education can have tremendous influence on what is taught in a school and how they are run. State boards of education have considerable influence over what textbooks are produced for sale, especially in large states like Texas and California.
