DailyKos on an iPhone?

Thu Jul 24, 2008 at 02:02:30 AM PDT

This just occurred to me today while I was using my iPhone--is it possible to set DailyKos up so that it will have the wide format in my browser but narrow on my iPhone, without creating two separate accounts?  And yes, I know, the wide format looks fine if I turn the phone horizontal, but that's a pain.

Also, on a related note, is it just me, or does anyone else think that it might be useful for candidates for office (specifically Barack Obama, but in general, too) to have mobile-phone versions of their website?  After all, if you see a sign with a web address, chances are, you'll go look up the site right then and there instead of waiting to go home to a computer to do so.  Then again, I've never done much more than basic HTML web design, so I have no idea how complicated and expensive that would be to do.

Poll: Jitterbug owners prefer McCain; iPhone users overwhelmingly favor Obama

Tue Jul 15, 2008 at 08:22:11 AM PDT

A non-scientific poll conducted from July 1-11 found that Jitterbug wireless phone owners favor McCain over Obama 62 percent to 31 percent. When the poll asked iPhone owners who they were most likely to support, Obama held a sizable lead of 87 percent to 6 percent for McCain.

Jitterbug, known for its large buttons, bright display, and a powerful loud speaker has been a popular item among senior citizens looking for wireless cell phones.

"I love it," says Eleanor Wright, 67, of Overland Park, Kans. "My husband and I only use it during emergencies. We don't have internet access or e-mail so we chose this phone. I especially like the buttons on the phone. They're large enough for me to see and press when I make a call."

Kucinich Too Boring? Steve Jobs Presents iPeachment 08!

Tue Jun 10, 2008 at 09:19:56 AM PDT

When he introduced articles of impeachment against President George W. Bush last night on the floor of House of Representatives, Dennis Kucinich may have been many things - brave, idealistic, and thorough - but he was also wicked boring.

I'm talking to you, D-Man. Yes, you pointed out all the ways that the Bush administration has trampled on the constitution but where's the sizzle, Dennis? Where's the catch phrase? (Suggestion: "Impeach THIS!") Where were the Abu Ghraib Dancers? Couldn't you at least get your wife to sit in the background pretending to listen to you while sitting next to a shirtless Matthew McConaughey? (And really - is there any other kind of Matthew McConaughey?)

The Second Coming of an iPhone

Sat May 03, 2008 at 11:45:06 AM PDT

This is the tale of one tough little iPhone. One that has become very near and dear to my heart. I've been traveling on a busy schedule with several hotel stops along the way. Upon checking in one afternoon, I was excited to see the hotel had a laundry room.  There was only one machine and knowing my co-workers were soon to be checking in behind me, I ran to my room, got the laundry together and happily threw in the first load of the night.

I moseyed back to my room, thinking I'd call ahead to warn the others to get change.  One quick look around the room and I didn't see my phone.  I turned over a couple of items, took a quick look through my bag, then another frantic look around. It all happened in the span of about 30 seconds.  I felt a sickness in my stomach and I knew......my iPhone was in the washer.  I've never run so fast in a pair of flip-flops in my life.  I reached the washer, tossed open the lid, and saw the pants in question with a steady stream of water beating them down.  Sure enough, the phone was in the pocket and completely submerged. The horror! Water was draining from every possible orifice.  In a state of shock, I frantically tried to dry it.  I shook the water out, trying to hold on to some sliver of hope that it would work again.  Admittedly, it did not look good, but I persisted with the tech equivalent of CPR.

I returned to my room and decided to wedge it in the vent of the air conditioner in my room.  I turned it on and left it there to dry out for about 16 hours, occasionally rotating sides.  My curiosity began to get the better of me.  It appeared dry.  No visible signs of water.  In my heart, I knew I should wait....but the impatient side of me won out. I could wait no more.....so I plugged it in and hit the power button.  Surprisingly, it powered on and showed my background graphic. Hope!  But, there were clearly still indications of water damage on the screen and it wasn't behaving normally, so I promptly powered it off. On the way to my next stop, I baked it on the dashboard for another six to eight hours. A friend Google'd for solutions and found the suggestion to put it in a bowl of rice to help absorb water.  So, I bought a bag of rice and tossed it in for another full day.

I tried to turn it on again and this time there was no response whatsoever.  Distraught, I made an appointment for the Genius Bar at the Apple Store back home and tossed it in my bag for the last two days of the trip. I rediscovered life without a cell phone.......and I don't recommend it.

After the long journey, I finally made my way home. Still feeling defeated, I went directly from the airport to the Apple Store......expecting to hear the worst. After all, I hadn't been able to get any response or a hint of a pulse for days. The young Apple tech reached over, plugged it in and lo and behold.....it was working! There was my graphic.....my contacts......my calendar......my photos! The "genius" was amazed and said he'd never seen one recover from such water damage. I had my MacBook with me and we promptly backed it all up, then continued testing all the features.  Aside from a few streaks on my screen that are only visible when looking at the device from the side view, it seems to be working like a champ. Things could still go awry down the road, but hopefully not until the new version comes out (rumored around June).

So, let that be a lesson to all of you cell phone users out there....and iPhone users in particular.  Never give up hope if your iPhone has been submerged.  Exhibit patience.  Get creative.  Try the rice. You too may be able to resurrect your recently submerged device.

In the meantime, please remember to back-up your data tonight. You never know when a tech disaster or your own incompetence may strike.

Now, I'm off to catch-up on a few calls.

The official Apple announcements thread

Wed Sep 05, 2007 at 10:16:03 AM PDT

Since the Apple Store seems to be closed at the moment, and since there is a lot of speculation regarding one or more possible new iPod launches today, I thought that "teh Steve" deserves a thread regarding his announcements. I'll be busy this afternoon, but since nobody has yet posted on today's event, I feel that posting an obligatory thread is in order.

Al Qaeda Launches jPhone

Sun Jul 08, 2007 at 06:33:40 AM PDT

Trying to catch the wave generated by Apple’s new iPhone, al Qaeda yesterday launched its new jPhone in three different Mideast trouble spots.  The jPhone, short for “jihadPhone,” went on sale simultaneously in Gaza City, Baghdad, and Kabul, in a move widely acclaimed as a major step forward for the outlawed terrorist organization.

“The jPhone is the new hot item for the young jihad set,” said Ayman al-Zawahiri in a video shown on the al Jazeera network.

Zawahiri is believed by most experts to be the brains behind al Qaeda’s new market savvy approach, of which the jPhone is the main thrust.

Don't Buy The iPhone (Stand up for Net Neutrality!)

Mon Jul 02, 2007 at 01:48:51 PM PDT

It's cool, it's sleek, it's revolutionary, and it has all sorts of bells and whistles. It's also the most hyped product since Windows 2000 (and we know how that turned out...). Its main technical issue seems to be slow internet speeds, as its network is not 3G; but there's something even worse about its network: it's AT&T. Not only is AT&T's cell network notoriously unreliable, but AT&T has seriously bad politics.

iPhone, iBread & Circus

Fri Jun 29, 2007 at 12:45:30 PM PDT

I hope that I'm not the only one here who is sick of hearing about the iPhone? I like Apple products, and I do believe that Steve Jobs is one of America's best CEO's out there right now, but I am sick of the hype and obsession that a PHONE is being allotted by the mainstream media. I guess that this gentlemen had his rage boil up today over it.

A "Revolutionary" New Congress!

Fri Jun 29, 2007 at 12:05:07 PM PDT

In case you're been hiding under a rock, the whole nation is abuzz today about the release of a highly-anticipated "game changing" product.  CNN reports:

Washington, D.C. --  Citizens, Inc. released its "revolutionary" product today into the citzen consumer market--the iCongress.

The device is the first of its kind, combining two chambers of legislative government and integrating them with such concepts such as efficiency, leadership, courage, and ethics.

Steve Jobs, CEO of Citizens, Inc., touted the iCongress as a "breakthrough" in modern governance. "There's never been an Congress can do this, or this, or this" Jobs said with excitement as he interacted with the device.

"When we created iCongress, we did so with the citizen consumer in mind," Jobs said.  "We went back and looked at previous Congresses and addressed the issues there with an eye towards creating something never before seen in American history.  So, what you'll see with iCongress is an emphasis on usability and ease of access."

"Transparency is a key part of the interface now," Jobs explained.  "It's complex device based on a simple concept: citizens first."

Indeed, that philosophy of "citizens first" is on display with many of iCongress's features.  Its multi-touch interface responds quickly to the user, and the device to reacts to a user's input.  For example, if users begin to look at an issue a different way on iCongress, the content switches position to accommodate the users and bring the content in line with their view.

"They want to feel like they control it, not that it controls them.  And really, isn't that what Congress was originally supposed to be about?"

Lines around Citizens,Inc. headquarters were already wrapping around the block, with the stretch of eager individuals snaking well down K-Street.

"I pre-ordered mine," said one lobbyist.  " Are you kidding me? When I heard about this launch in back in 2006, I knew I had to get one.  So I made some calls, made some down-payments, pulled some strings, and here I am...the front of the line."

Yet it's not just the rich and powerful lining up to access iCongress.  Scores of ordinary citizens are also clamoring to get their hands on one.

"I've been waiting for this for so long.  It's been a good six years, I'd say, at least," said one patient citizen camped out in front of the Citizens, Inc. store. "I was getting frustrated, when they kept pushing back the release date.  I was like, 'Come on, already, we deserve this, like, yesterday.'  I kept calling up, calling and calling those in charge, so much so they probably got sick of me! But it's important to me, you know?  So it's so cool that it's finally here."

Despite the huge demand for the iCongress, some critics question Citizen Inc.'s exclusive partnership with the Democratic Party, a party with a known history of disorganization and poor branding.

"We looked at several partners, initially," Jobs explained.  "To be frank, at the end, we just didn't feel like the others were a good home for the iCongress philosophy.   The Green Party was too small a network and didn't give us the nationwide platform that the Democratic Party brings to the table.  And the Republican Party? With its horrible citizen relations history and the near-daily scandals with its executives?  Too unstable.  Too risky.  iCongress is too important to put into such clumsy hands."

Explaining the long-term exclusive contract with the Democratic Party, Jobs stressed that any current shortcomings were outweighed by the potential.  "Look, sure, there are some problems with the network now.  I'll admit, the coverage is a bit spotty, especially in some rural areas.   But what's exciting about this partnership is the potential for real, long-lasting change on a national--indeed, a worldwide scale.  The Democratic Party will adapt, we'll work through the weak spots.  A few upgrades in some key areas and iCongress will be humming along at full speed."

iCongress will be available in two versions, one with 100 member capacity (S-model) and one with 435 member capacity (H-model).  Those getting the S-model are locked into a 6 year contract, while H-model purchasers are locked into a 2-year agreement.  Some potential customers were put off by the long-term commitment, voicing concerns that previous Citizens, Inc. products barely lasted beyond their campaign warranties.

Jobs explained that his hands were constitutionally tied and that the company couldn't issue a recall, not matter how defective the product was. "We've learned from the Lieberman model, and we've incorporated that into the sales process, stressing to customers how important it is to critically examine a member before commitment. Because once that election is made, well, you're locked into that contract.  That's just the way this business works, unfortunately. So it's important for customers to decide whether a particular member is a right fit for them at the outset."

Reviews of the iCongress have been overwhelmingly positive, with citizen's rights groups hailing it as "the most truly representative Congress ever."  Watchdog groups likewise heaped praise on iCongress, citing its increased transparency and the ability to "link in" and monitor events as "milestones" in the democratic process.

The iCongress will be available at Citizens, Inc. stores, as well as Secretary of State offices throughout the nation.

On the light side: iPhone review (with poll)

Tue Jun 26, 2007 at 05:23:07 PM PDT

No, I'm not lucky enough to have one.  But David Pogue of the NYT has posted a review that almost simultaneously made the front page online and the top of the "most emailed" list, so it seems there's some interest out here on the internets.

Since I'm considering upgrading to this myself, and have half-bought into the hype, I figured I'd see where the rest of you stood on it.

Flip over for review excerpts, or just enjoy the poll.
