Leaders of Color fear calling out McCain on Race and Racism

Sun Jun 29, 2008 at 06:01:38 PM PDT

I challenge our leaders of color to stand up to John McCain's history of disturbing racial politics.

Obama Supporter in New McCain Ad

Sun Jun 29, 2008 at 01:57:40 PM PDT

This is my first diary, so please be forgiving of any errors I may make. (I am highly impressed by the quality of the writing on this site in general, so I feel I bit intimidated to post anything).
This morning, I was watching the new McCain ad on CNN, you know, the one where he says he going to create jobs, make more and cheaper energy sources, fix health care, hold corporate CEO's accountable, fix the mortgage crisis and create millions of new jobs (mind you, this is a thirty-second spot---straight talk?!).
Well, the thing that has been catching my eye in the ad was at the end where he is in a factory and he is shaking the hand of a black woman.  As a woman of color, I expressed how implausible it is that she is actually a McCain supporter.  I thought to myself, "I bet she's totally for Obama".  I felt I could tell by her expression (as you can see, I tend to practice amateur psychology on everyone I see in these ads, especially political ads).
Then today, it jumped out at me, the prominent visible Obama logo on the woman's clothing---She is wearing at Obama t-shirt!

Here is the ad.

The logo is most visible at 0:26.

Will there be a “Day of Absence” if Obama gets robbed of the nomination?

Sun May 04, 2008 at 04:52:14 PM PDT

Will black, red, & brown  folks just get so disgusted that they will say the hell with this country – and just stay home?

This question was raised a few days ago in FishOutofWater’s diary   Furious Black Voters Won't Vote for Hillary in November

I read the 1161 comments carefully, a majority from white Kossacks, but quite a few strong replies from black and latino ones as well.

I realized that any response I made would be a diary in itself and so I’m writing one here.

The Politics of Cell Phones: Something I Never Thought About But...

Mon Nov 12, 2007 at 03:44:01 PM PDT

I love my Treo.  And even though I know I only want it because it's cool, I'm dying for an iPhone.  But in this great article on the Movement Vision Lab blog, two grassroots activists push us to examine the social, economic and political context behind cell phones...

Immigrants Neglected and Abused after San Diego Fires

Thu Nov 08, 2007 at 06:07:19 AM PDT

Remember how when Katrina hit, the government and media cared more about wealthy white folks than low-income people of color?  Suprise, suprise it happened again.

I don't need affirmative action. But America does.

Thu Jun 15, 2006 at 01:56:47 PM PDT

I always get an extremely uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach when the topic of affirmative action comes up.  Much like the topics of abortion, same-sex marriage, and the death penalty, affirmative action debates usually end before they even begin, both sides of the coin having already agreed to disagree without uttering a single word.  Affirmative action is a dirty topic with an even dirtier history, and for that reason it is one of the most difficult topics that I, as a person of color, will address in this lifetime.

More Rapes Confirmed In Katrina Aftermath

Wed Dec 21, 2005 at 03:47:24 PM PDT

Original at Booman Tribune.

First they said that there were widespread rapes of women, girls and even babies, as well as looting, murder and mayhem in the SuperDome, the Convention Center, and elsewhere in New Orleans.

Then they said that nothing of the kind happened, that there were only a few or no rapes.

The truth has been a long time in coming.  But rapes did occur in New Orleans during the civil breakdown after the levee flooding of the city.

National Public Radio had the story during its Morning Edition.  And it wasn't just Charmaine Neville.
