War is the state of two or more forces in opposition, supported by a social institution such as government or religion. A narrower definition restricts the sphere of war to conflicts involving violent force between sovereign entities. Usages such as the "War on Terror" stretch the former definition, allowing attacks on ideologies or conditions, and such usage is disparaged by many.
