Curbing the Housing Crisis from the Right

Fri Feb 22, 2008 at 08:12:46 PM PDT

No no no... I’m not talking about BushCo’s efforts to curb the housing crisis – although there is some movement from them on the economic front.  Besides... we already know they come at everything from the right (err, wrong).

In this case, I’m talking about Sen. Obama’s plan to address this crisis, and how his proposals fall far a field from Hillary and Edward’s plans to address a problem that countless 2 million working Americans are facing right now / today.

Yeah I know... housing and mortgage rates aren’t exactly sexy issues.  They’re not going to get folks fired up at campaign rallies but here’s the thing – we all have to live in something (house, condo or apartment) and most of us will sit down with a loan officer at some closing hoping like hell they aren’t ripping us off as we sign on the dotted line.

Hope will only get you so far – make the jump for more...

Hillary Gets A Standing O Tonight!

Thu Feb 21, 2008 at 08:58:59 PM PDT

I was wondering why the campaign’s communication director issued the following statement right after tonight's debate, until I read about Keith O’s disgraceful performance post debate.  He tried to portray Hillary’s kick-ass performance toward the end as some sort of concession speech.  Damn shame really – I used to like and respect Keith O.  Now... not so much.

The campaign didn’t waste any time responding to KO’s BS.  Howard Wolfson got this statement out before the dust even settled...

Statement of Howard Wolfson

What we saw in the final moments in that debate is why Hillary Clinton is the next President of the United States. Her strength, her life experience, her compassion. She's tested and ready. It was the moment she retook the reins of this race and showed women and men why she is the best choice.

Heart of a Champion

Wed Feb 20, 2008 at 06:18:59 PM PDT

We had a rough day yesterday to be sure.  I finally called it a day around 1am and as I was clearing out the dishes hubby left in the sink (sigh, again) I paused for a minute - leaned on the sink and thought... how in the HELL does Hillary keep on going in the face of the hate, the anger, the unfair media coverage, the sexism, and - tonight especially – this latest disappointment?

What drives this sister with the heart of a lioness?

Getting back into the White House?
Nooooo.  She’s been there before.

Receiving more adulation and love from the MSM & the press (Tweety & Russert)?
Hardly!

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that she is the very definition of a public servant.  She sees how much work there is to be done and she knows she’s the one person who’ll actually get results.  She’s got a long history of public service and sticking up for those without a voice.

She’s Worked the Night Shift Too

Tue Feb 19, 2008 at 08:03:59 PM PDT

Wow – this woman gets it when it comes to the things that keep working folks up at night.  Take a look at her new ad in Ohio...

The rust belt states are hurting and this ad speaks to each and every one of us who’ve lain awake at night worrying about that car repair bill we weren’t expecting and can’t pay, paying our mortgage, keeping our job in these uncertain times, paying for childcare, finding and paying for health care, funding our kids’ college funds, setting aside something for retirement, paying the heating bill, putting food on the table, school clothes / shoes / winter boots for the kids... The list goes on and on and on and Hillary’s the one candidate who understands all that.

She talks with us.  She listens.  And she’ll take our stories and our voices with her and make them her own if we’re smart enough to send this woman to the White House.

Seat Those Delegates Dr. Dean!

Mon Feb 18, 2008 at 06:20:39 PM PDT

Earlier this month, Julian Bond sent a letter to Howard Dean in which he asked him to make sure the Democrats in Florida and Michigan are represented at our party’s convention.  From Jake Tapper at ABC’s Political Punch...

Yesterday, Clinton's side of the argument got a boost when NAACP chairman Julian Bond wrote to DNC chair Howard Dean to express "great concern at the prospect that million [sic] of voters in Michigan and Florida could ultimately have their votes completely discounted." Not seating the Michigan and Florida delegations would remind Americans of the "sordid history of racially discriminatory primaries," Bond said.

Mr. Bond refers to the millions of people who turned out to vote in the MI and FL primaries as voters.  That’s true to a point – they are voters.  More importantly is the fact that they’re DEMOCRATS voting in our party’s primaries and caucuses.  And I think we’d be wise to keep in mind that we will need our fellow Democrats to turn out en masse to vote in both states come November if we want to win back the White House.

Another Rookie Mistake

Sun Feb 17, 2008 at 07:29:49 PM PDT

It wasn’t long ago that they hung a pair flip flops around the neck of our nominee and used them to help a draft-dodging party boy beat out a decorated Vietnam War veteran for the presidency.

They were pretty effective at calling John Kerry a flip-flopper and – sadly – that name stuck.  Remember this ad?

Today’s latest has to do with Obama’s earlier promise to agree to public financing (see page 5), and his apparent waffling on that promise now.  Make the jump – there’s more...

2208

Sat Feb 16, 2008 at 05:23:55 PM PDT

I got an email from Chris Bowers (BlogPac) yesterday asking me to contact media outlets and demand that they report the delegate standings as two separate groups – pledged delegates and super delegates.  Well I didn't fire off that email to CNN, but I did fire off this note to Bowers...

Seriously... with everything going on in this world you've got your panties in a bunch over how the media reports the delegate count?  Our economy's going down the toilet - 47 million of us don't have access to healthcare services - our planet's overheating - millions go to bed hungry every night - people are losing their jobs - their homes...

And you're worried about how CNN reports on super delegates?

I also heard that Pelosi's said she doesn’t want the DNC to seat the delegates from FL & MI and she was implying that super delegates should have to follow the lead of the voters in their state.

One question for David Axelrod... So does this mean that Kennedy & Kerry have to vote for Hillary now?

Forget the Flowers - Send Hillary Some Love Today

Thu Feb 14, 2008 at 06:04:29 PM PDT

I know it’s a bit late but maybe some of you west-coasters might be able to help me out.

I love the spirit of the people who’ve signed up with our new Yahoo Discussion group, Hillary’s Voice.  I’ve never seen such a dedicated group of folks.  Hat tip to GrrlPatriot for coming up with this play on words.  Check it out...

A dozen roses: $50.00
Greeting card: $3.00
Box of chocolates: $22.00
Hillary as President: Priceless

Heck, add dinner and a sitter to the total and you’re talking about well over $100.  Think of it – you get to skip the hassles of finding cards, flowers & candy, lining up a sitter, getting to the restaurant... all of it.  Instead you get to relax at home maybe over a nice dinner and a fire in the fireplace.  Put on your comfies, pop a video in the VCR, put your feet up on the coffee table and reeeelaaaaaax.

But wait – there’s more!  Make the jump to find out how you can help me attend a reception and maybe meet Hillary herself.  But DONATE First!

Wham Bam... Excuse Me?

Wed Feb 13, 2008 at 08:03:59 PM PDT

I’m sure you all remember that old [edit - ok ok I know - it was Bowie!] Aerosmith song (well maybe some of you are too young) that ends with wham bam thank you ma’am"!  You don’t have to be a 40-something like me to know what that means.  Now I don’t take what the New York Post has to say seriously (ok it’s nothing more than a supermarket rag really), but when they include a headline about yesterday’s Chesapeake Primary with a picture of Sen. Obama that says WHAM BAM Barack Romps in MD, DC & Virginia I just can’t imagine that they meant anything other than that he’s ...

Well you get the picture in all its disgusting slimy detail.

Guys we’re talking about a United States SENATOR here.  We’re talking about someone’s mother - someone’s wife - someone’s daughter for crying out loud!  We’re talking about a woman who’s dedicated her life to making this world a better place for us – especially for the children of this world and this is how they choose to report election results????

And people claim that sexism isn't an issue in the coverage of this election.

Hillary Stopped By to Say Hi Today

Tue Feb 12, 2008 at 07:52:47 PM PDT

Well it’s been a long day here in MD. Started off with a call from the sitter saying she would need the day off but then hubby came home early (weather sucked). So I thought well heck – I’ve already taken the day off, so it was off to campaign headquarters to make a lot of calls for Hillary.

First I put together a letter to our friends here in the area to tell them why I was voting for Hillary.  I reminded them of my son’s hard work and progress thanks to the early intervention and programs Hillary fought for, put into place and got funded.  I reminded them of what her historic run for the White House means to my little girl – of how hers will be the first generation of girls who’ll actually believe us when we tell them they can be President some day.

Then a friend called to set up a play date for our girls.  She told me she’d probably be voting for Obama & boy did I go into action at that!  I’ve been at this for nearly a  year now and I was not going to let that stand w/o a fight!  I told her about Hillary’s work with the CDF (her daughter’s got delays too) and a lot of other things she never knew.  I convinced her to vote for Hillary and if Kathy votes for her then I’m pretty sure Ron will too ;o)

Krugman: Hate Springs Eternal

Mon Feb 11, 2008 at 07:12:53 PM PDT

Hi guys – didja miss me yesterday?  Yeah, yeah I know... I post here daily but I was a little busy yesterday.  Our primary’s coming up and a bunch of us were out at the Democratic brunch, passing out a lot of lapel stickers and talking up Hillary’s historic run for the White House with the folks coming in for the event.

Sen. Obama’s supporters were there too and after folks upstairs asked us to keep it down (we were all down in the lobby cheering our candidate’s name as new folks came in) I started mentioning one line points of Hillary’s agenda... rebuilding the middle class, creating green collar jobs, getting our economy back on track, and UNIVERSAL health care.  I noticed whenever I mentioned that last one BO’s supporters cringed – I think because they know that what their guy’s proposing is not universal.  However one woman actually tried to claim it was universal, but I said Paul Krugman and most all of the top economists would disagree.

Speaking of Paul Krugman, you might have caught his column in the New York Times today.  Make the jump to check it out....

Chesapeake Primary’s Nearly Here!

Sat Feb 09, 2008 at 06:38:38 PM PDT

I’ve been working with our local group of Hillary’s supporters here in Maryland since last March, and I’ve gotta admit I never thought our primary would get here.  After months of volunteer meetings, phone calls, leadership group meetings, parades, phone banks, turning out at local festivals and Democratic club meetings and debates... (whew!) February 12th is nearly here.  I thought I might post a little about what’s been going on here on the ground.

We’ve been busy and now that Hillary’s had such great success in fundraising since Super Tuesday, she’s starting to air ads on our local stations.  I have no doubt that these ads will help increase her level of support in all three primary states (MD, DC & VA).  And the debate on our local ABC affiliate (WJLA) Monday night should really help her get her message out and allow everyone to see her mighty grasp on the issues.

Governor O’Malley and Senator Mikulski hosted a big rally in Annapolis yesterday, and from what I hear it was a raging success!  Make the jump for a report from one of Hillary's supporters who was lucky enough to have attended...

MSNBC Has Sparked A Women’s Uprising

Fri Feb 08, 2008 at 07:55:08 PM PDT

I’m sure you’ve all heard about David Shuster’s comments on MSNBC last night...

Pimped out.  He was laughing when he said that.  We're either brainless pawns in some evil plan, or we're pimps & whores.  I’m mad as hell over this latest round of attacks & from what hearing I’m not alone in thinking that MSNBC has just sparked a woman’s uprising that will make what happened in New Hampshire seem like a small wave on a lake.  We’re talking tsunami here folks.

Hillary Now the Official Movement Candidate

Thu Feb 07, 2008 at 07:07:56 PM PDT

The donations started to roll in when the polls closed Tuesday night.  And they haven’t let up yet.  Hillary sent out a fundraising appeal Wednesday asking us to meet a goal of $3 million in 3 days.

Guys she blew past that in on line contributions, raising $4 million in just 24 hours.  So they set a new goal of $6 million in 3 days.  Well they blew past that goal too.  After re-setting the goal at $7 million by midnight Friday, they’ve already met that new goal as well.

The money’s rolling in and the story tonight is that she’s standing toe to toe with Obama - a guy who’s got the grass-roots, turbo-charged institutional power of email lists that have taken YEARS to build up.  John Kerry - MoveOn - Ted Kennedy – Obama’s own list AND a lot of the NetRoots (including our fearless leader Markos and his PAC friends) – all of these folks have opened up their membership email lists for his use in fundraising and getting his message out.

And still Hillary’s been able to raise $7 million in just 48 hours!

Let’s Talk About Sex

Wed Feb 06, 2008 at 06:16:59 PM PDT

Or more to the point – SexISM.

Robin Morgan ran an essay in RAT back in 1970, called Goodbye To All That.   Well Ms. Morgan has just updated that essay, and given the double standard that seems to have taken hold in this campaign, I thought it was worth discussing.  In so many ways, Morgan echoes what I’ve been thinking for a very long time now, but have never quite been able to express as eloquently as this.  Here is part of what she had to say in those 8 pages...

Goodbye To All That (#2)   by Robin Morgan

Goodbye to the double standard . . .

Hillary is too ballsy but too womanly, a Snow Maiden who’s emotional, and so much a politician as to be unfit for politics.

She’s "ambitious" but he shows "fire in the belly." (Ever had labor pains?)

When a sexist idiot screamed "Iron my shirt!" at HRC, it was considered amusing; if a racist idiot shouted "Shine my shoes!" at BO, it would’ve inspired hours of airtime and pages of newsprint analyzing our national dishonor.

Is Obama Trying to Telegraph A California Loss?

Tue Feb 05, 2008 at 07:58:30 PM PDT

The polls were still open when Camp Obama started to complain about how confusing California’s rules are to their "Decline to State" (read "independents") supporters.

The San Francisco Gate is reporting that the Courage Campaign (a pro-BO 527) is calling California the new Florida when it comes to LA County.

Bubble Trouble?

The Los Angeles system requires that decline-to-state [DTS] voters not only ask specifically for a Democratic ballot - but also fill in a special bubble on the ballot specifically indicating their desire to vote on the Democratic presidential ticket. Failure to fill in the bubble voids their presidential ballot.

Answers to An Edwards Supporter (and Open Thread)

Mon Feb 04, 2008 at 06:15:25 PM PDT

I just got a wonderful note from someone who’s been backing John Edwards.  They had lots of great things to say about Hillary, and had the following question.  Take a look...

I'm not holding out because of corporatist issues since she and Obama are the same in that regard.  While Iraq is important to me, it isn't my primary issue, and I don't see many differences between them there.  What would sway me is her stand on economic justice issues.  I don't expect her to be like John, he's a once in a lifetime candidate on those issues.

But besides SCHIP, where is she at with the plight of the poor and working class?  I get the sense she's got a piecemeal approach but no overarching philosophy.  Am I wrong about this?  And if I am could you explain what her philosophy is?

I thought it’d make sense to answer the writer here.

But first to the person who sent me that note  – please consider voting for Hillary in your state’s primary.  The contest up your way is closer than you think, and if you’re at all interested in seeing Hillary get this nomination, now is the time to stand behind her with your vote.

Psssst! Hey John – He’s Still At It (Updated)

Sun Feb 03, 2008 at 05:15:05 PM PDT

Ya know... if he hadn’t put out that statement saying all those nice things when John Edwards suspended his campaign, I would have thought he’d just missed the news.  .  I mean first he went all Harry & Louise on Hillary’s (and Edwards) health care reform plan over the whole issue of mandates (which are included in his own plan).

Now we find that he’s belittling Edwards in his stump speeches in Delaware today.  I guess he’s so used to going on the attack against Hillary & Edwards that it’s just force fo habit by now.  I mean he couldn’t have forgotten that Edwards isn’t in this race any more – right?

Take a look at a video I found at Mark Ambinder’s site...
