Happy Saturday. I was going to stay away from the people whose birthdays were discussed in Friday's Cheers and Jeers until I realized I KNOW about one of them. So today let's celebrate the 197th anniversary of the birth of Henry David Thoreau (pronounced, as I learned at a NEH seminar on the Transcendentalists in Concord, MA "THUH-row" with the accent on the first syllable).

Itzl Alerting

As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here.  We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries.  Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group!  Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!
Ok, we do have a diary schedule. But, when you are ready to write that diary, either post in thread or send FloridaSNMOM a Kosmail with the date. If you need someone to fill in, ditto. FloridaSNMOM is here on and off through the day usually from around 9:30 or 10 am eastern to around 11 pm eastern.

It's been a busy week, with court proceedings in Colorado and Utah and anticipation of action from the Fourth Circuit with regard to the Virginia case.

In my first diary I told you about the wonderful time I had with newpioneer in off-the-beaten-path Puerto Rico. Now, we'll start in the most urban place in the world, move north to a place that some locals call the Hub of the Universe and progress further north to southern Maine, mostly in the company of my other brother-in-grief, commonmass. The dates, again:

June 23: Delta, San Juan - JFK, for dinner with the NY Kossacks June 24.
June 26: Amtrak, Penn Station to Boston, to visit commonmass
June 30: Amtrak, Portland, ME to Boston's North Station
July 1: Virgin America, BOS - LAX
The rest of my adventure follows below the Great Orange Lobster Trap.

I know. You probably expected the next installment of my analysis of Notes on Camp, or at LEAST something elaborating on something I found in my travels in June. My travels will continue in another diary (probably on Friday), but this is my attempt to make up for my diary on the (admittedly unfamiliar) Stranglers. So tonight we investigate another supergroup like Cream, also British, who no less a personage than Dave Grohl says heavy metal would not exist without this group and

if it did, it would suck.
#14 on Rolling Stone's best artists list, just ahead of Stevie Wonder, just behind Buddy Holly. Ladies and Gentlemen,
John Bonham (drums), Robert Plant (vocals), Jimmy Page (guitar), John Paul Jones (keyboards) - the artists who composed the super group Led Zeppelin.

Well, I promised, so I will. Thirteen days in Puerto Rico, Manhattan, Boston and Southern Maine. Just visiting friends. No scheduled activities, no conference to attend, no papers to present, just me going places I wanted to go. The details:

June 18-19: Delta, LAX - San Juan, changing in Atlanta, to visit newpioneer.
June 23: Delta, San Juan - JFK, for dinner with the NY Kossacks June 24.
June 26: Amtrak, Penn Station to Boston, to visit commonmass
July 1: Virgin America, BOS - LAX

I'd never been on a trip like this. I could have stayed in ANY of the places I was visiting longer, and I'm considering going back because, well, friends! So now, below the Great Orange lobster trap, details, with some pictures.

A public apology

by Dave in Northridge

You might have noticed that every so often I make a few comments that call out some of the more valued members of the Kos community in a fairly out-of-character way for me. It's not "every so often;" it's specifically on the 5th of the month. Predictable, yet I forget because, well, time has passed as I try to make believe that the loss of my husband hasn't left a major hole in my life.

Why the 5th? You might remember I wrote this diary on December 5, 2012. Yes, nineteen months ago today. I honestly don't know why I haven't developed the habit of looking at the calendar each month and reminding myself "Do not make comments that have ANY meta connotations today."

So this is a specific apology to navajo and to grannycarol for my petulance and out-of-sortsness in two comments I made today. I promise I'll make more of an effort to police myself at the beginning of the month from now on. But this is another indication of how bereavement works for anyone who has suffered a significant loss as I did.

I can do better.

Happy Saturday, all. 57 years ago today, Althea Gibson became the first African-American to win the women's championship at Wimbledon.

I guess this is another promotional diary for NN 14. The Rivera Court at the Detroit Institute of Art is spectacular in itself, but the rest of the collection is every bit as excellent. You won't be surprised to know that I concentrated on the galleries of American Art while I was there, and it's only because it was on this trip I learned that you bring your phone charger with you every time you're out with your smartphone. I liked some of the early 20th century decorative art too. Incidentally, two of these paintings are paintings I use in the classroom to illustrate certain points.

I'll use some of the pictures I took and some taken by professionals, of five paintings by American artists, painted between 1780 and 1870. Each with some significance.

IAN - June 21

by Dave in Northridge

You've probably noticed that we're observing the 50th anniversary of many events in the 20th century struggle for Civil Rights nowadays. Today, we observe one of the more somber anniversaries. I'll keep it brief.

This would have been his 88th birthday. You didn't want to hear about Louisville again, did you? Since I'm partway through a discussion of Susan Sontag's "Notes on Camp," I thought it might be instructive to discuss an example of Intentional Camp who was presented to the public on the pre-cable airways in a completely matter-of-fact way. If you've been paying attention to the stuff I've been writing about pre-Stonewall culture, you will have noticed that I throw the word "knowing" around a lot. In Lynde's case, you knew even if you didn't know, but again, there's knowing something is funny without exactly knowing why. You found NO clues in his obituary, and this even at the beginning of the AIDS decade.

So an investigation in the context of gay culture.
