"Here" Is Just As Important As "There"
Fri Dec 07, 2007 at 02:12:07 PM PDT
Firecrow & I stopped watching television over a year ago during which we vowed only to turn it on when Extreme Makeover:Home Edition played on Sunday nights.
We call it our crying show as he & I spend the entire show passing kleenex to each other. These individuals are doing some wonderful good in the world. Obviously, ABC would not continue showing this unless it was making a pretty substantial profit; we try not to focus on that. People must be watching and supporting the project.
Not viewing TV does not mean we live in a bubble, with no world information. We have the internets:the tubes. And no commercials:the best part. The obscene nature of blaring commercials is enough to cause my blood pressure to rise. Even viewing the one show we do watch, we have to mute the commercials when they come on. It's all buy, buy, buy--but that's a diary in itself.

The Free Hugs Report
Sat Sep 22, 2007 at 02:30:29 PM PDT
"Free Hugs" signs went up this morning in Madison, Wisconsin at the Capital building downtown during the busy farmers' market.
The weather was a beautiful 70 degrees without a cloud in the sky.

My step-son Eddie and I spent about two hours walking the perimeter of the market while Firecrow played photographer.
Jump for more hugs:
So, Sir, Have You Had Anything To Drink Tonight?
Mon Sep 17, 2007 at 10:16:26 AM PDT
I've been contemplating writing a diary about our drinking culture in the United States for some time now, just not knowing what specifically I wanted to address. What is most important to me? What would other members deem worth debate? What about our drinking culture, history, laws and flaws do we need to address?
As a substance abuse counselor working mostly with DUI offenders, a subject has come up on many occasion in group and in my individuals appointments with clients: Police Check Points.

Sunday Family Focus

What is a family?
Everyone has one; or at least, came from one. But, how do you describe something that varies from culture to culture,or from small towns to big cities. Families have been changing constantly since the beginning of time.
The US Bureau of the Census (2005) defines a "family" as follows:
"two or more people....related by birth, marriage, or adoption and residing together in the same housing unit."
But, that clearly does not cover everyone who considers themselves part of a family.
Let's explore that, and other interesting tidbits:
Technically, It's Still The 11th Hour

Today, we rejoice in a double victory!
I expected to pick up the House, but was concerned about our chances with the Senate. It's sometimes wonderful to be incorrect.
Our celebration is long overdue and we all deserve this brief moment to yell, scream, jump for joy, have a glass of champagne, and pat each other on the backs for all the hard work.
It feels sooooooooooooo damn good.
So, now what.......have a jump and I'll tell ya.......
Why don't you just get some help?

Clarity is a beautiful thing. The difference in our two main political parties could not be more certain.

The Ripple Effect Of Republican Decisions

Anyone who works in a human service vocation understands there is no one cause for a problem....ie...alcoholism, child abuse, delinquency...etc.....
Multicausality complicates the fixing of these issues.
Hence my diary; our Nation's condition is a result of this very condition. There is no one cause for the state of our country.

Dropping Knowledge (UPDATE)
Thu Aug 24, 2006 at 08:34:33 AM PDT
On August 19th, I wrote a diary about the "Table Of Free Voices" that will be gathering in Berlin on September 9, 2006.

http://www.dailykos.com/...
112 participants will gather around a vast round table, each with a video camera facing them, as they, together, answer 100 of today's most crucial questions, selected from thousands submitted to the Dropping Knowledge
website over the past few years.

What Is Your Question?
Sat Aug 19, 2006 at 06:28:57 AM PDT
In 2004, I came across a website posing a striking concept:
The idea to bring together 112 people from around the world, seated at a round table, to answer 100 of the world's most probing questions. Each person would have their answer recorded and video taped, which would then be put in an internet "library" for everyone to access, promoting dialog and the sharing of ideas from around the globe.
The impetus of this idea has grown tremendously since the first time I visited.
