Chet Edwards and CHIP
Mon Oct 15, 2007 at 03:43:09 PM PDT
In 2004, I remember that that we would be able to only keep Lloyd Doggett’s seat after the Delay redistricting. Lloyd is out of Austin, which is a safe seat. However, Chet Edwards put a spoke in Delay’s plans. His opponent was Arlene Wolgemuth, the architect of the plan to kick kids off of CHIP.
Now, Texans kinda have a "pull one's self up by the bootstraps" attitude. However, if you work hard and play by the rules, you should be able to get a little help if you need it. In 2003, over 150,000 kids were kicked off of S-CHIP due to Ms. Wolgemuth’s efforts. She actually went around bragging about it. This is one of the things that Chet Edwards ran on.

Galveston CHIP Protest
Sat Oct 06, 2007 at 01:55:58 PM PDT
Bush's veto of the CHIP funding increase has really gotten some of us in Galveston County riled. Nick Lampson, one of our congresspersons voted yes. Ron Paul, of course voted no. So we are going to have a protest this Monday. The Daily News will be there to cover it. I want to invite everyone to join us if you can.

Fortune Magazine Asks “Are Americans too lazy?”

Fortune Magazine Asks "Are Americans too lazy?"
I have to tell you that when I saw this reported on The Situation Room, my head almost exploded. I had to go a check out the article. Here a couple of things that it said:
<blockquotes>The surprising report of our relative sloth arrives in new research from the UN's International Labor Organization, which looks at working hours around the world. When it comes to what we might call hard work, meaning the proportion of workers who put in more than 48 hours a week, America is near the bottom of the heap. About 18% of our employed people work that much.</blockquotes>
Rove Coming to the Aide of Texas Republicans?
Mon Aug 13, 2007 at 06:34:56 AM PDT
I have to tell you that I have a different take on why Rove is resigning. He might very well trying to avoid the new sheriffs in town. However, I think that it is more to do with shoring up the GOP party in Texas. Right now, it is falling apart. The chinks started in 2006, when Dallas county flipped their judicial seats democratic. This is DALLAS COUNTY! It has been Republican forever.
Here is a diary that I did for another blog.
MKC
Karl Rove, President Bush's longtime political adviser, is resigning as White House deputy chief of staff effective Aug. 31, and returning to Texas, marking a turning point for the Bush presidency.
He is giving the usual reason of spending more time with his family. That Josh Bolten, Bush’s chief of staff, says anyone who stays past Labor Day has to stay until Bush’s end of term. What a crock! Rove can leave when he wants. I don’t think that he is leaving, because he is afraid of congressional investigations. They are running the clock out on that. So why is he really leaving?
Texans are mad as Hell!
Fri Mar 02, 2007 at 03:58:05 PM PDT
Texans are mad. Madder than a bunch of hornets who got their nest knocked over. After 13 years of republican rule, we have:
-the highest number of uninsured children
-the highest number of uninsured people period
-the highest childhood death by asthma
-highest number of high school drop outs
-highest level of pollution
-highest insurance rates
I could go on, but you can see where I am going. The republicans have literally been destroying our state. The national party has been using Texas as a laboratory for bad government, as Molly Ivins would say. They have been looting the state. In essence doing a reverse Robin Hood. Taking from the poor and middle class, and giving to the rich and corporations. Texans have been simmering for a long time, and the dam is starting to burst. For the last two elections we democrats have actually begun to increase seats in the state house(7). You saw what happened in Dallas. We stemmed the "red tide" in Galveston, and yes Harris county looks ready to go democratic.

Dean and Fundraising
Thu Jun 09, 2005 at 07:05:11 PM PDT
There has been so much griping about Dean's fundraising efforts from certain Washington dems. I received an email from one of our DNC delegates that shows a comparison of how Dean is doing. It looks pretty good to me. Especially his fundraising for state parties. He is doing two fundraisers in Texas on the 17th and 18th. I don't think that is being counted in what he is really doing.

Bush's allies retreating on private accounts
Sat Apr 30, 2005 at 06:07:08 AM PDT
''Bush succeeded in the past three elections, including the midterm, demonstrating that Republicans could bring up Social Security and survive," said Paul Gigot, editorial page editor of The Wall Street Journal, a leading voice of free-market economic opinion. ''What he has not demonstrated is that anyone will pay a price for opposing reform."
They may be retreating, but they live in a fantasy world. I remember during the 2002 elections. Republicans who talked about privatizing did a big about face when people said no way. Here is the rest of the article.

Christian Right's Big Complaint about The Inauguration
Thu Jan 20, 2005 at 08:26:17 AM PDT
They sent a letter to Bush voicing their displeasure about Jenna and Babs. I myself find it over the top. It's really creepy how out of touch the Christian Right is. They haven't figured out that they have served their purpose and Bush doesn't have to pay attention to them anymore.

The Fun's in the Fight
Mon Dec 06, 2004 at 03:01:02 PM PDT
A column by Molly Ivins. She wrote this around 1992. I think that this helps our perspective, and may get you to laugh a little. Molly is one of my favorites.
I apologize for not having a link for this. This was sent to me as is.

I've been talkin' to a bunch of the fun lovin' freedom fighters of Texas lately, and we all agree that there's one thing we need to pass on to all of y'all from the few of us before I take a leave from these pages. (I'm takin' a leave of absence on account of I have to write a book, and time has become both scant and precious.) The thing is this: You got to have fun while your fightin' for freedom, 'cause you don't always win.
Ronnie Earle's "Smart Frames"
Tue Nov 23, 2004 at 09:10:10 AM PDT
Initially, I was going to do a post in the big blog about Ronnie Earle's op-ed. As I was writing it, I realized that we often talk about framing ideas to appeal to the voter, but in a general sense. This is great, but what works in Illinois won't work in Texas. The approach has to be developed that includes the beliefs of that area and the people who live there. I gave Texas and Illinois as the example, because I was born and raised in Illinois, and have lived in Texas for the past 8 years. Totally different worlds.

Texas Gains A State Seat!
Tue Nov 09, 2004 at 07:04:27 AM PDT
Hubert Vo beat out Talmedge Heflin, a 22 year state representative. Granted it was by only 31 votes, and there will be a recount. The republicans are whining about a flawed process. This with them holding the power of the county clerks office. Ha Ha.
This will be the first gain by the democrats in 32 years. There is hope.
With the last votes finally counted late Monday, Democratic newcomer Hubert Vo nudged Republican incumbent Talmadge Heflin out of the Texas House of Representatives seat he has held for 22 years by a 31-vote margin.

A Mandate For "Moral Values"--But Nothing Else
Fri Nov 05, 2004 at 03:58:58 PM PDT
I really enjoy reading Craig Paul Roberts. He was in the Treasury Department, and what he writes is often on target.
What was the presidential election about?
In their victory speeches, Vice President Cheney and President Bush claimed a "mandate," "historic victory," and that "America has spoken."
A mandate for what? A victory for what? How spake America?
Pundits have declared that the election was about "moral values." Americans in the red states voted against homosexual marriage and abortion.
Let's hope that this is correct. Otherwise, America is doomed if Bush's reelection is based on his economic and foreign policy record.
Can you imagine our peril if Bush's mandate is for unprecedented trade and budget deficits and job loss? Or for taking the country to war based on incompetence or deception?
Thankfully, the electorate did not give Bush a mandate for getting thousands of Americans killed and maimed for no other reason than the Bush administration's inability to assess the intent and capability of Iraq.

Support is getting thin for Tom Delay
Thu Oct 21, 2004 at 07:00:31 PM PDT
These are not easy times for Mr. Delay these days. People are more and more outspoken about their displeasure with their representative these days. This is really big. 18 months ago, if you were not a true blue republican, you were the enemy. You don't hear that these days. My how times have changed.
Just for your information, Delay has just bought $500,000 worth of advertising for the next 12 days.

The Debate That Almost Wasn't
Tue Oct 19, 2004 at 09:43:42 PM PDT
Well tonight was the Morrison/Delay debate that Delay tried to bow out of. He made various excuses as to why he wouldn't do it. It would only benefit Morrison. There would be no media coverage. There would be more candidates than potential voters. Guess what. Tom Delay showed up!!!
Also, his all excuses were debunked.

Kerry could get a boost if report shows U.S. workers losing purchasing power

WASHINGTON BUREAU
Friday, August 6, 2004
WASHINGTON -- When the Labor Department releases its July jobs report this morning, Democrats will be watching not only the employment trends, but also whether hourly wages continue to lag inflation.
If so, Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry may be able to argue more forcefully that President Bush has failed to help average workers.
