Iran Frees Hikers Bauer and Fattal

by Plubius

Detained more than two years ago for allegedly crossing into Iranian territory while hiking along the Iran/Kurdistan border.  Jailed as spies.  Sentenced to 8 years in prison for espionage.

Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal are now free men.  Iran released them on a $1 million bail-for-freedom deal Wednesday.

I know neither of these two men.  Their politics on foreign affairs certainly do not agree with mine.  And this is very welcome news.

Bauer and Fattal were in some seriously deep do-do.  You can read about how they ended up in an Iranian prison here.   Iran used and abused them for cynical reasons.

So three cheers to them, their families, and all the people in our government who, over the past 780 days, have worked to reunite Bauer and Fattal with their families.

“Keep it to Yourself"

by Plubius

“Keep it to yourself whether you’re heterosexual or homosexual.”  Words of wisdom from Mr. Rick Santorum, who last night said he would reinstate the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in response to a soldier's question via satellite from Iraq about DADT.

Santorum opposes social experimentation with the military.  That's why soldiers must  “Keep it to yourself whether you’re heterosexual or homosexual.”

Santorum is totally right on the money here.

Our boys fight for God and Country. They don't need to parade around their sexual interests.  They certainly don't advertise their interest in women.  Take WWI.  Our honorable doughboys strictly stuck to their business of killing the Hun.  As this refined -- and extremely popular with the chaste members of the American Expeditionary Forces -- depicition of the wholesome life clearly shows:

See how tastefully the wildly popular artist Raphael Kirchner depicts this virtuous women prudently adjusting her stocking?

More wholesome images over the fold showing our fine boys in uniform keeping it to themselves.

A Modest Proposal

by Plubius

Elections don't matter.  The Dems are the same as the Republicans.  Obama is a sell out.  The jobs plan will do nothing.

And so on and so forth.

On every thread, some posters just have to throw in some defeatist comment of that kind. No substance. No suggestions. Just gainsaying for the sake of gainsaying.

Well, I have an idea about that. Well, a minor suggestion of sorts. Actually, a Modest Proposal:.  Here it is:

A Modest Proposal for Preventing the Defeatists and Nay-saying Comments on the Daily Kos from being a Burden on this Partisan Blog and Country and for making them Beneficial to the Publick:

Purge them.  HR them.  Such comments have no business here.

What Are You Listening To?

by Plubius

It's a lazy labor day weekend.  Lounging around the house before some friends come over for a whine lunch.  I've got my itunes set on random, and the Moody Blues' Days of Future Past came up. I haven't heard it for years.

I am now. It feels good.

Dawn is a feeling
A beautiful ceiling
The smell of grass
Just makes you pass
Into a dream

You're here today
No future fears
This day will last
A thousand years
If you want it to

I feel young listening to this.

So, what are you listening to?

A friendly neighborhood reminder to all California Kossacks to start calling California Senators about AB 52, allowing regulation of health insurance premiums.

Senator Fran Pavley -- (916) 651-4023
Senator Curren Price -- (916) 651-4026
Senator Darrell Steinberg -- (916) 651-4006

Everything you need is in yesterday's diary by Seneca Doane which was posted last night.  I hope to remind to everyone who said they would be calling in that diary, and everyone else in the Golden State, to call now.

Weiner Must Go!!

by Plubius

Weiner must go.  It ain't the crime; its the cover up. Never mind, technically there was no crime.  There was a coverup.

He lied. He lied to us. He lied to Rachel. He lied to me.

To me!  Just who does he think he is?!?  That smug, arrogant man.  Playing with my emotion. Destroying my trust in him. Shameless, two-faced, fool!

Sure we all have personal failings. Well, most of us.

To my fellow atheists:

This week on the rec list we've had more than a few diaries that can only be described as Christian punching.  I won't link them.  You know where to find them.  Enough is enough already.   It's bad manners, bad politics and bad policy.   We are all, believers or otherwise, on the same team.  Team Democrat.  So, my fellow atheists, cut the crap.

We have better things to do, like, oh, I don't know.

Fight the Republicans.

The Republicans Want to Gut Grandma

by Plubius

The Republicans want to gut grandma.

Now, they don't say it this way, but it is true.  Waffle though they might try, Boehner just told Wall Street Republicans are willing to gut Medicare.  Y'know, John Boehner, the Speaker of the House.

The most power Republican in the nation.

That's right. The most powerful Republican in the nation still wants to gut Medicare.  Said more clearly, Boehner want to gut grandma.

DONATE TO JAPAN

Hello My Lovely Family and Friends,

First I want to thank you so very much for your concern for me. I am very touched. I also wish to apologize for a generic message to you all. But it seems the best way at the moment to get my message to you.

Things here in Sendai have been rather surreal. But I am very blessed to have wonderful friends who are helping me a lot. Since my shack is even more worthy of that name, I am now staying at a friend's home. We share supplies like water, food and a kerosene heater. We sleep lined up in one room, eat by candlelight, share stories. It is warm, friendly, and beautiful.

Note: The following advisory issued by Santa Clara University was brought to my attention by a colleague whose child attends there. With slight modification, I reproduce it here.

Undoubtedly many of you have been following the ongoing events in Japan following the severe earthquake, tsunami and nuclear reactor emergency.  Some of you have expressed concerns about the potential risk of radiation reaching California, so I wanted to share with you the latest information from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) on this matter.

According to Federal, State and local regulatory agencies, there is no current risk of radiation reaching California.
