30 Free Days "Unfiltered" Convention Coverage Online

Mon Aug 18, 2008 at 10:11:21 AM PDT

I've seen some folks ask about the DNC convention and how/where to follow it, and I wanted to point out one option: a 30-day free trial of XM Radio Online, and the availability of XM's POTUS '08 channel through that trial.

The Pot Calling the Samovar Black: Bush and McCain on Georgia

Tue Aug 12, 2008 at 01:45:32 PM PDT

I was flabbergasted this morning by the quotations from both President Bush and Senator McCain regarding the Russian military action in the Republic of Georgia.  If anyone needed an example of why the U.S.' invasion of Iraq has delegitimized our leadership as a moral authority, these statements provided a stark one.

Reflections from 1 Block Away from a Terrorist Attack.

Tue Jul 22, 2008 at 10:13:43 AM PDT

This afternoon, I was returning a rental car at the Hertz office on King David St. in Jerusalem, where I'm running a program for my American law students.  Suddenly, tens of police cars and motorcycles zoomed by, sirens blaring.  "Is this because of Obama's visit?" I asked the person at the desk.  "No," she replied in Hebrew.  "A terrorist attack."  What I didn't realize was that the attack was a block away.

My Nuclear Conflict, and a "Modest Proposal"

Thu Jun 19, 2008 at 02:14:35 PM PDT

I'm conflicted about the role of nuclear power in the U.S.'s overall energy mix.  Nuclear power can be a good thing.  Nuclear power plants, not so much.

My Prediction: First Three Words Tonight

Tue Jun 03, 2008 at 12:10:33 PM PDT

Just to get on record, after the "Thank Yous" and "I Love You Toos," I predict that Senator Obama's first three words in his speech tonight will be...

To Bring Down Oil Prices, We Need Certainty

Thu May 29, 2008 at 05:45:46 AM PDT

Oil prices (and, by extension, gasoline prices) have been rocketing up over the past few years, with no end in sight.  While many solutions have been proposed (including Bush's ineffective begging the Saudis to increase production), there is only one thing that will truly bring down prices hard and fast: certainty of a Democratic victory in November.

Air America Suspends Randi; John Hancock to Follow (Edited)

Thu Apr 03, 2008 at 12:22:13 PM PDT

Here we go again.  Sam Seder has just announced that Air America has suspended Randi Rhodes after her remarks about Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro at a San Francisco public appearance on behalf of an AA affiliate.

Happy Birthday Air America!

Mon Mar 31, 2008 at 06:26:21 AM PDT

Four years ago today, the radio world tilted a bit back from the right with the launch of an ambitious (some might say, unrealistically so) radio network called Air America Radio.  To the surprise and dismay of many, it's still on the air and still speaking the truth.

A Clinton Supporter Pleads for Clinton to Step Aside

Fri Mar 14, 2008 at 07:53:28 AM PDT

I was a John Edwards supporter from the earliest stages of this campaign season, because I felt that Senator Edwards brought the best qualities of policies, integrity (no corporate money at all), electability and outlook to the presidential race.  When Senator Edwards suspended his campaign before my local primary (New York), I had to make another choice.  At that point, given everything, I chose and voted for my senator, Hillary Clinton.  There too, of the remaining choices, I felt that Senator Clinton on balance brought more to the table than Senator Obama, although I was happy to vote for either in the fall.  I contributed (a small amount) to her campaign, advocated for her here and elsewhere, and discussed my choice with friends and family members.

In the past two weeks, I have changed my mind once again.  Today, I urge my chosen candidate, Hillary Clinton, to drop out now.

The "Will of the People"? Which People? Which Will?

Wed Mar 05, 2008 at 09:05:10 AM PDT

A lot of discussion of the Democratic superdelegate question has echoed the same concern: that somehow, the superdelegates will not follow "the will of the people" and that the nomination of the Democratic candidate will be tainted as a result.  What seems to be missing is a common definition of "the will of the people."  The result may be starkly different, depending on whose will, and which people, are meant.

A True Apples to Apples Comparison on Iraq

Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 02:27:59 PM PDT

In terms of intellectual honesty, it may be at least somewhat helpful to compare speeches to speeches.  In about 3 seconds on Google, I found Senator Clinton's floor speech explaining her vote on the Iraq resolution.    I had not in fact read it before (shame on me), and it is quite instructive.  Similarly, I have read for the first time then-State Senator Obama's speech on the possibility of a war with Iraq.  The differences are there, but ideologically, they are not that severe.

Change? Change What, Exactly?

Wed Feb 06, 2008 at 12:26:58 PM PDT

As an Edwards supporter (I was going to write "former Edwards supporter," but I still support Senator Edwards' ideas even though he has "suspended" his campaign), I have had to evaluate the two remaining major candidates for the Democratic nomination very carefully, in order to decide whom to support.  In the end, my support and my vote yesterday went to Senator Clinton.  In the process, I've studied much of Senator Obama's message and heard his speeches, particularly his focus on "changing Washington."  What I'm missing, though, is exactly what "change" he can and will make if elected president.
