It doesn't happen very often.
You, fellow Ocean Stater, actually have the opportunity to shift the direction of our country.
The How of it is easy - these 4 steps take less than 2 minutes.
For the Why, keep reading below.
- Call Senator Chafee's office now at: (202) 224-2921 (or call the Capitol switchboard toll free at: 800-426-8073 and ask for Senator Chafee's office);
- Indicate that you wish to speak to a staff member;
- Tell the person your name and city of residence;
- Tell them to let Senator Chafee know your view on Alito.
NB: I originally submitted this to Projo, but it'll likely have more eyes on it sooner here. And I don' really want to be published - I just want to scuttle Alito.
The appeal below the jump is written for ANY AND ALL Rhode Islanders, regardless of political stripe.
Shut the gov't down - First do no harm!
Thu Sep 08, 2005 at 07:52:47 AM PDT
We - the American people - are in danger!
Remember how during the last several years, the mantra regarding another terrorist attack in the U.S. was
not a matter of if but when.
Katrina washed away any illusions of an efficient Federal response. Had the levees been breeched by a terrorist's bomb not kind enough to provide many days' warning, the death toll would likely have been 5 times what Katrina caused - perhaps more, but certainly not less.
What can we do? We can shut down the government until changes are made!
How is on the flip
Another NO Story from the inside
Tue Sep 06, 2005 at 10:27:25 AM PDT
This is 3rd hand from a listserve I'm on.
A couple of choice quotes:
We have yet to see any of the TV coverage or look at a newspaper. We are willing to guess that there were no video images or front-page pictures of European or affluent white tourists looting the Walgreen's in the French Quarter.
All day long, we saw other families, individuals and groups make the same trip up the incline in an attempt to cross the bridge, only to be turned away. Some chased away with gunfire, others simply told no, others to be verbally berated and humiliated. Thousands of New Orleaners were prevented and prohibited from self-evacuating the City on foot. Meanwhile, the only two City shelters sank further into squalor and disrepair.
We were hiding from possible criminal elements but equally and definitely, we were hiding from the police and sheriffs with their martial law, curfew and shoot-to-kill policies.
and finally...
Throughout, the official relief effort was callous, inept, and racist. There was more suffering than need be. Lives were lost that did not need to be lost.
What's this "we"? IRAQ must succeed
Wed Jun 29, 2005 at 01:16:46 PM PDT
Yesterday, Dubya gave his "stay the course" speech for the nth time. Dem respondents gave great critiques, but continue to parrot the "we must succeed" line.
WTF?
The (non-partisan) line should be: "IRAQ must succeed."
But in the meantime, the left needs to grab it.
Brainstorm: Tax Day Protests
Tue Mar 22, 2005 at 02:04:46 PM PDT
What are your April 15th plans?
If you could stand outside your local post office that day, what would be on your sandwich board?
What pamphlets would you hand out?
What signs would you hold?

Where we won, can still win & how we fight
Wed Nov 03, 2004 at 11:38:57 AM PDT
First - we have
LA runoffs, so cans still get 2 seats in Congress by working for Mount & Melancon through December 4, and every seat counts.
Second - Yes we must organize, but how can we defeat judicial appointments, "patriot" laws, etc. when we're so outgunned on the Hill?
We need to learn from our successes, and repeat them.
"It's the fascism, stupid!"
We won the Sinclair battle - and we can win many more like it.
Corporations are the vulnerability in this corporatist/fascist government.
This is where we must fight. This is where we must focus our organizing. More after the jump.
LTE: Mass Stockholm syndrome
Mon Nov 01, 2004 at 09:00:52 AM PDT
I live in Rhode Island. Our
Providence Journal just endorsed Bush. In the editorial, they make patently absurd claims such as:
[F]rom the moment that the first airplane smashed into the World Trade Center,
President Bush fully understood the stakes for civilization in the war on terrorism...
...
Mr. Bush is determined to take the war to the terrorists before they strike at us again.
...
President George W. Bush, in a second term, would not only build on the coalition he has already assembled against terrorism but also help establish Mideast peace...
How do I make sense of these delusions? Stockholm Syndrome - my LTE responding (awaiting publication decision) is below the jump.
Seriously: Kerry & Red Sox Parade - Poll
Thu Oct 28, 2004 at 07:25:28 PM PDT
Should Kerry attend the Red Sox parade
tomorrow (Friday) Saturday in Boston? Take the Poll.
The Red Sox victory parade is scheduled for Friday Saturday in Boston, 10:30am - 1:30pm, and expects to draw 3 million or more fans and well-wishers.
Kerry is a life-long Red Sox fan, but his schedule doesn't have him visiting Boston. I'm sure he wants to...

Reframing W's "Tax Relief" into "Bush Loans"
Sun Sep 26, 2004 at 06:36:10 PM PDT
Bush will inevitably mention his plan to make his tax cuts permanent and/or expand upon them. This is easily turned around by saying:
"Do you remember that 5 trillion surplus that W turned into a 6 trillion deficit? Well, W isn't returning your money to you, He's taking out a loan and putting your name on it.
"We're all going to have to repay it - with interest. And we're going to repay these 'Bush Loans' when he:
- takes away our mortgage deductions
- takes away our charitable deductions
- creates a national sales tax
and any of the other ways he hopes to pay for his boondoggles.
"Well, I think the American people are smart enough to decide when they want to take on more debt. We need to balance the budget again, and get rid of all these 'Bush Loans.'"
Letter to swing states FOR Kerry: Pls help
Mon Sep 20, 2004 at 09:59:48 PM PDT
Kossacks! Editors! Grammarians! lend me your help!
I have a letter I want to send to other folks in a person-to-person activism in swing states. (I've signed up for MoveOn PAC's Precinct Partner Program and will do some solo stuff too.) My target audience are the "swing" voters, or the disaffected Republicans who don't know why they should vote for Kerry. I want to focus on security (since anyone focused on domestic issues should be pro-Kerry). I want to be warm, genuine, and not strident. I'd like the letter to build.
Your suggestions and comments are welcome and appreciated. (Right now, it's 2 typewritten pages - don't ask which font.)

Say it now... Iraq=Bush's Folly Fumble
Thu Sep 09, 2004 at 11:28:23 AM PDT
We've learned the hard way of the power of names, branding, etc. (We lost on the "death tax", and we'll be fighting hard on "tort reform" and "frivolous lawsuits during the next several weeks and on.)
We need to refer to Iraq as "Bush's folly" "Bush's Fumble." It hangs it on Bush, emphasizes the mistake, and inoculates a Kerry administration from being held responsible as Nixon was for Vietnam.
Say it with me: "Bush's Folly""Bush's Fumble."
- Did you hear of the news over in
"Bush's Folly" "Bush's Fumble"?
- We should've gotten UBL before starting
"Bush's Folly" "Bush's Fumble."
- I can't believe how much of our tax dollars are being thrown away in
"Bush's Folly" "Bush's Fumble."
Also - the first time you use it, don't explain it. People will know automatically, or ask. It's more powerful to just assume they know.
1000th loss: George OPTED OUT of UN support
Tue Sep 07, 2004 at 09:11:20 AM PDT
As we near the horrid milestone of the 1000th American military combat fatality, let's remind everyone that George Bush
could have had UN support in Iraq, but opted out by rushing in.
A 2003 WaPo article quoted Jacques Chirac pledging support for a 2nd UN resolution giving a 30-day deadline for the UN weapons inspectors to finish their job and report on Saddam's compliance.
Sorry no link, here's the ref:
(WaPo March 17, 2003, Pg. A13, "Chirac Suggests Iraq Be Given 30 More Days; French Leader Speaks Before Summit")
That's right, had we delayed our invasion by 26 or 27 days, we would likely have had full-UN support!
Gee, that would've really sucked, wouldn't it?
PS - As far as the counts, my understanding is that we've already passed 1000 for American combat fatalities (which would have to include the American "contractor" merc deaths), and well past 1000 American deaths in Iraq (which would have to include the many non-combat / post-combat fatalities).
