Blair climbdown on 90 day detention without charge

Thu Nov 03, 2005 at 06:30:03 AM PDT

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair faced a Commons revolt last night on proposals to extend the period of time a terror suspect can be detained without charge from 14 to 90 days.

Yesterday was a bad day for Blair, David Blunkett the former Home Secretary and trusted Blair ally resigned from Cabinet for the second time in a year

The terror bill reading was postponed when it was feared a backbench amendment to limit the detention without charge period to only 28 days would pass the Commons.  So although Blair seems keen to march in step with Bush and the rest of those who would sacrifice our civil liberties in the name of "freedom" and the "war on terror"; thankfully the Labour Party still has a firm commitment to them, and a healthy suspicion as to whether these draconian "extraordinary measures" are actually necessary or desirable.

They've never had it so good.

From today's Salon This is an interesting quote from everybody's favourite charitable cockroach-killah, the allegedly ethically challenged Tom Delay; in the Salon cover story on right-wing dissent against BushCo's war.

The Culture of Life

"Bush opposes UK Africa debt plan  - The UK's plan to write off debts owed by African nations is facing opposition in the US - and particularly from President George W Bush."

So much for compassionate conservatism and the culture of life eh?  How's he going to make good on those AIDS related promises if he isn't even willing to write off the debt?

So much for a zero tolerance policy on terrorists

"US blocks extradition of 'bomber'

The row has strained relations between Venezuela and the US
The US has rejected Venezuela's request for it to extradite a Cuban-born terror suspect over a 1976 airline bombing that killed 73 people.
Washington told Venezuela that its request to extradite Luis Posada Carriles lacked sufficient evidence.

The 77-year-old former CIA employee was charged last week with illegal entry into the US from Mexico.

He has denied involvement in the plot to blow up the Cubana Airlines plane on a flight from Caracas to Havana.

Venezuela could make another extradition request if it provides more evidence, a US state department official told reporters. "

So it looks like the moral of this story is it's alright to be a terrorist as long as it's the CIA that's paying you to plant the bombs.

And seemingly the US Administration does actually understand the concept of "evidence",  despite the complete and utter disregard for it within it's own gulag system for potential terrorists and 'enemy combatants'.

Is it ever right to support terrorism?

Fri May 27, 2005 at 02:39:05 AM PDT

So I've been thinking about "The War on Terror", and if, as the Shrub Administration and many Americans believe it's perfectly justifiable for a nation state to wage war indiscriminately and outside of international law in the pursuit of terrorist groups...would it have been OK for us, here in Britain to have sent the Tornadoes over to raze the Statue of Liberty and half of Boston; given that millions of dollars was funelled into the coffers of the IRA terrorists by NORAID & American citizens during the 70's and 80's?
Can we extraordinarily render Ted Kennedy please?

Oh yeah, and in the interests of fairness and balance, the British military fired on unarmed civillians on Bloody Sunday 30th January 1972.
Also, Winston Churchill sent survivors of The Great War 1914 - 1918 over to Ireland as the irregular Black and Tans; to be the equivalent of the South American death squads your government and military know only too well.

Impeachment

Did I spend the 1990's living in a parallel universe?  I seem to recall a big hoo-ha about impeaching Clinton due to sperm on a dress and possession of contraband Cuban cigars or something. Not to mention the hoo-ha about inhaling Marajuana during the campaign in '92

Now you have a President who has a documented cocaine bust, a conviction in Maine for drunk-driving, and has buried Enron's attempt to bankrupt the state of California and rig the energy market due to a close friendship with "Kenny-Boy-Skull-and-Bones" Lay. Not to mention ignoring the CIA prior to 9/11, launching a 2 year illegal war where the hospitals were bombed first so nobody could account the "Collateral Damage", condoning torture & constructing Gulags, having a questionable service record himself defending Austin from Commie Flying Saucers, or whatever the point of the Texas Air National Guard was.

Where is the "Chappaquiddick Impeach Bush" Slush Fund and why are the Shrubber and his Teflon allies Dick and Rummy still sitting pretty at the top of the tree?
