Happy * New Day * folks, lets strive to make it a great one!

I was hanging out with my really, really close friends this weekend. It occurred to me that we're pretty homogeneous, meaning we're all pretty much the same exact type: middle class, educated, Gen X black males from Philly. We're mostly from the same frickin' NEIGHBORHOOD, lol. And it's weird. I met some of these guys in college, hundreds of miles away from that neighborhood.

This is what I call my "close circle of friends." Vee, Rell, Bill, Jeff, Chuck, Tiz, Wanz, Geo... all the type I described above.

Now I do have people I consider friends who are most assuredly not that type. I've got rich white friends from the neighborhood we moved to when I was in high school, plus working class ethnic whites, people I've connected with on my nationwide/worldwide travels, people I've met other places online, and Kossacks I've met, all of whom run the gamut of humanity.

But my core? My squad? My clique? They're just like me. We're not diverse, lol.  (Although... that COULD be a pic of our arms up there, lol, even still.)

How about you? Is Your Circle of Friends Diverse?

It occured to me, as I was racking my brain trying to think of something cool and funny to write for this diary, that I never think of myself as a writer which is strange, because I'm the child of writers. My dad is a poet. My mom was a journalist. Both of them consider[ed] writing their "natural state." I do not. They very much enjoyed the act of writing, especially pen to paper. I hate that, actually... price of lefthandedness, perhaps.  They wrote for fun. I never have.

However, writing comes very naturally to me. Take this diary: I just looked up and realized I've actually got something here, lol. I was running on automatic, basically. Thinking with my fingers. That's always been how I write. I've never done poorly in writing classes or on writing tests. I've typed SO MANY WORDS online I could probably give Dostoevsky a run for his money, were they compiled.

I don't, however, consider myself a writer. I don't think I ever will, 'cause I don't think of writing in anything like the same way as my writer parents do and did. This stuff is like talking to me. Not "writing."

How about you?

Do You Have Any Old "War Wounds?"

Happy New Day Folks!

Oh man, these old bones... I'm currently sitting in my tee shirt shop, in a comfortable chair, on a pillow. There's a cane right by my chair. Why? 'Cause I badly strained my hamstring on my left leg a couple weeks back.* That's on top of the sciatica I already had on that side. Meanwhile I've probably sprained my left ankle like 100 times, lol. The combo has me walking like Fred Sanford.

None of that gives you cool scars though... only cool scar I have is from a time I was stabbed above my hip in 10th grade. That's my old "war wound", lol.

How about you?

*Actually doing a lot better this week, folks. I can sit (and SLEEP!!) without pain, and can actually stand up for a solid minute, lol.  I'm not downing these painkillers like TicTacs anymore either. I went all yesterday's daylight hours without taking one. Trust me when I tell you that's PROGRESS! Belated thanks for all the well wishes last week.

* New Day * — Pirate or Ninja?

There are a lot of choices one must make in life: Democrat or Republican? Liberal or Conservative? DC or Marvel? Baked or Fried? Tom or Jerry?

However, none of those challenge us so much as the penultimate choice:  Pirate or Ninja?

 photo Pirate_v__Ninja

From the wiki (and yes, there's a wiki for this):

Pirates vs. Ninja is a comedic Internet and gaming meme regarding a theoretical conflict between archetypal Western pirates and Japanese ninjas, generally including arbitrary "debate" over which side would win in a fight. The meme is sometimes referred to as PvN and has a long history on the Internet. Humorist Jake Kalish writes (in the pro-ninja column) that the reason for the popularity of the meme is that "pirates and ninjas are both cool, but kind of opposite, see, because one is loud and the other ... never mind." Several competitive web sites and games based upon the ninjas vs. pirates theme appeared later, including Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball.

Ninja supporters hold the position that a ninja would win over a pirate because of their superior mental and physical capabilities, as well as usage of belical gadgets such as nunchucks and shurikens. Those who support pirates argue that a pirate's use of both sword and gun would ensure their victory in battle. A real-life confrontation of European pirates with ninjas has never been recorded in history[citation needed], and there is little evidence to suggest that pirates and ninja ever had hostilities. The debate has accumulated a wide following in cyberculture nonetheless (or perhaps because of this). A wide array of YouTube videos, websites, and online debate forums can be linked to the pirate vs. ninja conflict.

I'm a ninja.  Why? BECAUSE BATMAN IS A NINJA. What's good enough for The Bat is always good enough for me. Always Be Batman.

How about you?

Today is a * New Day * and on days like this, I laugh to keep from crying.

So Who or What Makes You Laugh?

 photo Richard-Pryor-9448082-1-402_zps6b4099a2.jpg
For me, the funniest person on the planet will always be my dad. He's like a mixture of Richard Pryor and Mark Twain with Paul Robeson's voice and mannerisms. He SLAYS me, it never fails. He says his best audience is me, my Aunt Phyllis (his sis) and my godfather David (his best friend.) We all start laughing if he even pulls a funny face, much less opens his mouth. And he plays to that, constantly.

My mom's side of the family is decidedly not funny. Or I should say: not intentionally so, lol.

Anyway, I like black comedians like the aforementioned Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappelle and Kevin Hart. I like absurdist comics like Will Ferrell. I love slapstick comedy like The Stooges or Chris Farley (RIP). I loved Seinfeld, and I love low-key British comedies. I laugh at irony. I like my friends to be funny, and I NEED my lady to be funny.  I laugh a lot, and love doing so (as some of you have probably noticed.)

So how about you?  What makes you laugh?

When Edward Snowden publicized his revelations, I was one of the people shrugging and "yawning."  I've mentioned my background as a child of people the gov't would consider "radicals" several times in response to people asking me why I felt like that.  But it isn't just that reason that makes me so cynical.  I've been steeped in literature, video gaming, television, and film that's... I dunno, "prepared" me for the notion that the NSA (or whatever alphabet agency) is watching everything I say and do. follow me over the fleur du kos for some examples.

It's a beautiful * NEW DAY * folks, hope you enjoy it!

What decade is " yours? "

I was born in the 70s (my motto is "hardcore since '74" like HUSTLER magazine hahaha) but since I barely remember them, "my decade" is the 80s. That's the decade I became a teenager, that's the decade from which my favorite songs tend to come from. ("RUN [run] DEE EMM CEE!")  I loved the clothes. (benetton, lacoste, coca cola, adidas, two tone lees!) I loved the cars. (the '88 5.0 is a BEAST)  My favorite memories are from the 80s. If I see "I love the 80s" on VH1 I park myself. 'Cause I DO. A LOT.

How 'bout you?

Do You Have Brothers and Sisters? Are You Close?

Happy NEW DAY, folks!
 photo pennstreet_zpsac6530bf.jpg
Do you have brothers or sisters?

Are you close?

I'm the second oldest of my father's (known) children. I'm the oldest of the "acknowledged" children. (quotes because I don't know if that's the right word: everyone, including my dad, knows my older sister is my sister except her, and that's her mother's doing.)

I was my mother's only child.

I've 3 beautiful younger half-sisters who have lived in Massachusetts their entire lives.  I've lived in Philly my entire life. We love each other to death and beyond, but we relate more like cousins do, 'cause of the distance. Conversely I grew up on the same block as my mother's brother's kids, so those first cousins are like my brother and sister.

(To completely confuse the issue, that older sister I mentioned is my cousins' cousin on the side that's not related to me. yeah.)

So that's my family, lol. How 'bout yours?

What Was Your First Musical Memory?

Good *NEW DAY* folks, howya doin?

I'm wearing a Peter Tosh tee shirt today, which sparked this diary, because his album is the first one I remember hearing.  "Downpressor Man" in particular, I remember as a lullabye.  I remember thinking "I Am That I Am" was something akin to what Popeye said all the time:  "I am what I am, and that's all that I am."  I hadn't put it together with the words of The Hebrew God, at that point lol that came later.  I remember "African" made me aware of different complexions within the African diaspora, and that those differences were basically meaningless.

This album shaped my thinking more than just about any other.

here's my lullabye:

What Summer Festivals are you looking forward to?

Hello folks!  my handle is mallyroyal, but you can call me mally.  I'm the newest member of the * NEW DAY * team, and I'm honored and excited.  hope I do as well as everyone else has.

my diary asks the question "what summer festivals are you looking forward to?"  this question is informed by the fact that this past Sunday I went to an African American street festival on South Street in Philly called "ODUNDE."  http://odundefestival.org/  it's the oldest such festival in the country, and I've been going since I was a little kid.  it begins with a procession to the river, where people throw fruit and other "libations" as gifts to, and recognition of, our ancestors.  there are several stages featuring both local and international talent.  (this year the final concert on the main stage was Big Daddy Kane.)  it's an awesome place to find African sculpture and clothing and pan-African food and music.  I recommend it to anyone who's never been.

your turn!

last night me and my lady were riveted by this documentary.

Watch The Central Park Five on PBS. See more from Central Park Five.

THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE, a new film from award-winning filmmaker Ken Burns, tells the story of the five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem who were wrongly convicted of raping a white woman in New York City’s Central Park in 1989. The film chronicles The Central Park Jogger case, for the first time from the perspective of these five teenagers whose lives were upended by this miscarriage of justice.
