Jack Cafferty and Bay Buchanon (on CNN) just declared if Kirk Fordham told Hastert about Foley two years ago, Hastert is toast, will be gone by end of week, if not end of day.

I hope Hastert actually hangs in for the next five weeks. It gives the story more legs than if the GOP doesn't fold its tent and change the leadership. More of the arrogance and entrenchment will mean greater victory in November.

Being urban Democrats, we happened to go out to a social event in the burbs today, knowing that some of these folks are pretty strong republicans. Kept the message pretty simple: "Have you heard about Congressman Foley and the Hastert Coverup? Even Boehner and Roy Blunt probably knew. It's time to get rid of these pedophile republicans." Jaws dropped, but even the GOP'ers couldn't disagree--and many agreed. Link 'em all and sink 'em all.

A Democratic Response to "Cut and Run"

by mcd

Please use this with all of your GOP friends:

It is unconscionable for the President of the United States to brand the Democratic Party--the party of FDR, the party of Truman, as the party of "cut and run."

Under a Democratic President, we broke the back of Nazi Germany and saved the world from facism. Under a Democratic President, we stopped Imperial Japan in the Pacific. Under George Bush and this Republican Congress, after three and a half years, we can't even secure the city...just the city... of Baghdad. George Bush's wartime policies have failed where Democrats have proven they succeed. It's time for a change.

"Clustering" is apparently the new, hip term for bussing immigrants to certain schools to get the English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, at least in Knoxville, TN. At least Knox County Schools thinks this will keep them out of hot water with the Office of Civil Rights.

How very '50s of them.

Any good journalist needs to be asking the following: (they probably won't)

UPDATED: According to the Corpus Christi Caller Times, they are on this story for the long haul. Kenedy County Sheriff's Department is notorious for not communicating, and statements from them have been hard to come by. Even if the national media is spinning this as an accidental shooting, it sounds like the Caller Times is doing a great job, and have really gone into go mode. No official other than the vice president has declared this accidental. The Armstrong ranch is apparently located in Kenedy County. The Kenedy County Sheriff's department has not issued any statements. Again, the only official to declare the shooting accidental is Cheney himself. What time was the Kenedy County Sheriff's office called?

Has this shooting been ruled accidental? When? By Whom? What time? Has the scene of the shooting been investigated? Why has the Sheriff's office not not yet made a statement about the investigation?

there are more serious questions on the flip.

Where is Our Homeland Security?

by mcd

It is obvious that slashing the Army Corps of Engineers budget and preventing levee maintenance amplified the damage from Katrina. New Orleans, our nation's largest seaport, must be abandoned as a result.

This is the fault of the Bush Administration. Katrina was a natural disaster. The flooding of New Orleans was preventable. In 2001, FEMA reported that a hurricane striking the Big Easy was one of the three most likely disasters to strike the U.S. By 2003, funding for federal flood control projects including levee maintenance was cut by President Bush.

Drop a Ship in the Levee

by mcd

I'm extremely frustrated by reports that the Corps of Engineers was dropping 1000 lb bags of rock trying to fill the 3000 foot breach in the levee, and that now they've given up.

I think it's a better idea to find the nearest retired aircraft carrier (museum) and float it on to the levee wall and sink it, then bag around it. A container ship or two might work, too.

There's something about George Bush that reminds me of another Texas president mired in a previous quagmire with no exit strategy, and no credible reason for sending our troops in harm's way.

"But whether it be here or in Washington or anywhere else, there's somebody who has got something to say to the president, that's part of the job," Bush said on the ranch. "And I think it's important for me to be thoughtful and sensitive to those who have got something to say."
"But," he added, "I think it's also important for me to go on with my life, to keep a balanced life."
The comments came prior to a bike ride on the ranch with journalists and aides. (8/14 Birmingham News)

As a veteran myself of the Gulf War, I and many like me probably owe our lives to what was known as the Powell Doctrine. Two central tenets (no pun intended) of the Powell Doctrine: overwhelming force and a clear exit strategy.
