The Libby Letters

Tue Jun 05, 2007 at 10:31:24 AM PDT

Wolfowitz

Wolfowitz commends Libby for protecting a covert CIA agent, he also relates how Libby helped Armitage with legal advice. Wolfowitz goes on say that Libby's wife is a "life long Democrat".

One involves his [Libby's] effort to pursuade a newspaper not to publish information that would have endangered the life of a covert CIA agent working overseas.

[]

I also remember how Mr. Libby offered his services pro bono or at reduced costs after he had returned to private law practice - to help former colleagues and friends with legal issues. In one case he helped a public official defend himself against libelous accusations, something that is extremely difficult to do for anyone in public office. The official in question was Richard Armitage who more recently served as - Deputy Secretary of State.

Tenet on 60 Minutes outing Plame was "Big time wrong"/ Video

Mon Apr 30, 2007 at 07:46:44 AM PDT

CBS has the video of the entire Tenet interview up on their website, including extensive transcripts.

When asked about the leak of Valerie Plame's employment at the CIA, Tenet was clearly angry.

"She's one of my officers. That's wrong. Big time wrong, you don't get to do that," Tenet says. "And the chilling effect that you have inside my work force is, 'Whoa, now officers names are being thrown out the door. Hold it. Not right.'"

Asked how much damage that did, Tenet says, "That's not the point. Just because there's a Washington bloodletting game going on here and just because her husband's out there saying what he's saying. The country's intelligence officers are not fair game. Period. That's all you need to know."

"They didn't seem to know that in the White House," Pelley remarks.

"I'm done with it. I've just told you what I think," Tenet says.

Armitage Will Not Be Indicted / Has Information On Rove

Fri May 19, 2006 at 07:25:20 AM PDT

Steve Clemons reported yesterday at The Washington Note that former Deputy Secrectary of State Richard Armitage was a target of the Fitzgerald Grand Jury.

Today he has new sources who say that Armitage not only will not be indicted but that he has tesified three times and that information from Armitage is what has put Karl Rove at major risk of indictment".

Two sources have reported that Richard Armitage has testified three times before the grand jury and has completely cooperated and has been, as one source reported, "a complete straight-shooter" and "honest about his role and mistakes".

Ben Domenech Responds on Redstate

Fri Mar 24, 2006 at 12:49:15 PM PDT

Domenech post at Redstate. "Red America Ends".

Domenech writes under the name of Augustine at Redstate.

My critics have also accused me of plagiarism in multiple movie reviews for the college paper. I once caught an editor at the paper inserting a line from The New Yorker (which I read) into my copy and protested. When that editor was promoted, I resigned. Before that, insertions had been routinely made in my copy, which I did not question. I did not even at that time read the publications from which I am now alleged to have lifted material. When these insertions were made, I assumed, like most disgruntled writers would, that they were unnecessary but legitimate editorial additions

Miller, Russert, Cooper, and Kristof Back in the Plame Game / Libby Subpoena

Wed Mar 15, 2006 at 08:08:08 PM PDT

Libby has issued subpoenas to Judy Miller, Tim Russert, Matt Cooper, Nicholas Kristof, and the NYT.

Pincus, Novak, Woodward, and Viceca Novak are not mentioned.

Looks like Judy Miller's back in the Plame Game. Kristof, the author of the original article featuring Wilson as an anonymous source has also been subpoenaed. Kristof also was one of the first to point out that leaking Plame's identity could be a crime.

The NYT will have more in tomorrow's edition according to Editor & Publisher.

NEW YORK Lawyers for Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the indicted former aide to Vice President Dick Cheney, served subpoenas on Tuesday on The New York Times Co. and its former reporter Judith Miller relating to the Plame/CIA leak case, The Times reveals in its Thursday edition.

Libby requests CIA records / Plame and National Security Accessment

Wed Feb 01, 2006 at 06:43:04 AM PDT

Looks like Libby is going after the CIA.

Libby is requesting records from the CIA. Specifically regarding Plame's employment classifcation and any national security assessments conducted by the CIA to determine any damage as a result of the WH leak.

Attorneys for Vice President Cheney's former chief of staff urged a court yesterday to force a prosecutor to turn over CIA records indicating whether former CIA operative Valerie Plame's employment was classified, saying the answer is not yet clear.

The defense team for I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby also asked that the court require Special Counsel Patrick J. Fitzgerald to turn over any informal assessments conducted by the CIA to determine whether the leak of Plame's identity in July 2003 damaged national security or agency operations.

Plame / Phelps and Royce First Reporters Contacted By Fitzgerald.

Thu Jan 19, 2006 at 10:49:00 AM PDT

I've always wondered what happened with these Newsday reporters.....In the Columbia Journal Review, Timothy M. Phelps of Newsday has a run down of his dealings with special prosecuter Fitzgerald, this information has never been made public until now.

Phelps and his coauthor, Knut Royce along with Novak were the only reporters named in the original document request from the DOJ in September 2003, they were also named in the January 2004 subpoena from Fitzgerald.

According to Phelps, he and Royce were the first reporters contacted by Fitzgerald.

Roughly two months after he empaneled a grand jury in Washington in December 2003, Patrick Fitzgerald called Newsday saying he wanted to talk to us. So far as I know, we were the first reporters he contacted, with the possible exception of Novak, whose interactions with Fitzgerald are still unknown.

Trevino Questions Markos on Ethics

Wed Dec 21, 2005 at 08:18:24 AM PDT

Josh Trevino has a new blog, his 12/17/05 post is about ethics in political commentary. Trevino uses Markos as his example of questionable practices.

Trevino implies Kos was paid for favorable blogging by Dean and that Kos is pushing Unembedded, a photojournalism book, because he is using the publisher of Unembedded for his own book.

Still, it's often possible to spot when a blogger's extracurricular interests influence his site and his work. Here's an example:

Markos Moulitsas, proprietor of the single most successful blog on the planet, has a book coming out. It's been known for some time that this book has been in the works.

On an apparently unrelated note, in November 2005, Moulitsas starts plugging Unembedded, a photojournalism book filled with (apparently quite good) images from Iraq. He plugs it and plugs it and plugs it and plugs it.

Rove: The Hadley Email

Wed Dec 07, 2005 at 02:03:43 PM PDT

Did Fitz have the Hadley email early in the investigation?
When did Rove testifiy about the Hadley email?
When did Rove testifiy about telling Cooper about Plame?

I think Rove testified in 10/04 that he had a conversation with Cooper before the Novak column. I think this is when he turned over and testified about the Hadley email, but he may not have mentioned the interesting part of the conversation,   that he told Cooper about Plame.

It's possible Luskin thought Fitz had some sort of documentary evidence (that would be the Hadley email) that Rove had talked with Cooper. This explains why Luskin was searching through Roves's email account in the first place and probably ties into the fact that it looks like Rove was asked about Cooper in February 2004.

UPDATE: WAPO: Viveca/Luskin talk before Rove's 1st testmony in early 2004

Sat Dec 03, 2005 at 11:30:25 AM PDT

New WAPO that states that the Viveca/Luskin conversation occured in early 2004.

This article goes on to say that Rove's first Grand Jury testimony was after the Viveca/Luskin conversation and Rove did not disclose the fact that he spoke with Cooper during that testimony.

One person familiar with the case said the Novak-Luskin conversation is not what prompted Rove to change his testimony in the case. In fact, this person said, Novak told Luskin about the Rove-Cooper connection before Rove's first appearance before the grand jury in February 2004. In that appearance, Rove testified that he did not recall talking to Cooper about Plame.

BBC: Judy Miller admits additional sources on Plame

Fri Dec 02, 2005 at 08:42:06 AM PDT

In an interview with the BBC, Judy Miller admitted that others told her about Valerie Plame.

BBC INTERVIEWER: Who was it who told you that Valerie Plame was a spy?

JUDY MILLER: I don't remember who supplied the name. I remember and I testified before a Grand Jury to who it was that told me that Valerie Plame worked at the agency in the WMD area and that individual was Lewis Libby.. Scooter Libby.

BBC INTERVIEWER: Was there anybody else who named Valerie Plame to you as a CIA agent?

JUDY MILLER: Yes, other people did, but I - my notes - these interviews were two years old. I never wrote a story about it. It wasn't - I didn't consider it very important information at the time and my notes have no indication of who those other people were - and I really couldn't remember.

PROSECUTOR PLANS ON CALLING CHENEY AS WITNESS IN OPEN COURT; EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE FIGHT LOOMS

*Exclusive*

Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald is planning to call Vice President Dick Cheney as a witness in the trial of Lewis Libby, the DRUDGE REPORT has leaned.

But the high stakes move could result in an executive privilege showdown between the White House and Fitzgerald, a top government source said Sunday.

"If Mr. Fitzgerald is going to demand a public recounting of conversations between the vice president, or even the president, and his staff, on matters he, himself, has acknowledged are 'classified,' executive privilege will obviously be invoked."

Fitzgerald has made it clear to lawyers involved in the case that he prefers Cheney appear as a witness in open court.
