There is an incredible piece in Rolling Stone regarding the revival of the Taliban in Afghanistan. Those of you who have been on this site for a while know that the Taliban and Afghanistan are a particular area of interest for me and the focus of my diaries.
More about the article after the fold.
If everyone could take a moment from the diaries regarding the DNC to read the following article in the New York Times today:
AP and other outlets are reporting that hundreds of Taliban fighters took over several villages in southern Afghanistan on Monday just outside the region's largest city. This is my second diary on the Taliban in the last few days (the previous one discussed the 1000 Taliban prisoners who broke out of an Afghan jail) and just shows the situation on the ground is very grim and heading in the wrong direction:
NY Times has an article that demonstrates why we must focus on Afghanistan - the Taliban is growing more brazen in their attacks and we simply don't have the troops there to stop them:
"Taliban militants staged a brazen bomb and rocket attack on the main prison in southern Afghanistan late Friday, blowing down the gate and helping hundreds of suspected insurgents flee, officials said. Many police officers were reported killed.
The complex attack included a truck bombing at the main gate, a suicide bomber who struck a back wall and rockets fired from outside, setting of a series of explosions that rattled Kandahar, the country's second biggest city.
A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousef Ahmadi, said 30 insurgents on motorbikes and two suicide bombers attacked Sarposa Prison and freed about 400 Taliban members."
This will be very short.
From Halperin at
"Senator Clinton will be hosting an event in Washington, DC on Friday to thank her supporters and express her support for Senator Obama and party unity."
One can only hope this is the last time we hear from Mr. Wolfson, Lanny Davis, etc.
I just saw this piece in the New Republic. It is priceless. Here is a taste:
"Some in the media are declaring the series over because the Boston Celtics have won four of the six games played so far. But I don’t understand why, with a series this close and hotly contested, anyone would want to shut it down before we play a seventh game and have all the results in. As anybody who follows the NBA knows, a seven-game series would be good for the league, and the added competition would make the eventual victor, whomever it might be, a stronger opponent against the Los Angeles Lakers in the Finals."
"But know one thing: If the media and league elites put the Celtics up against LA, they will lose, and we’ll be the first to say I told you so."
Here's the entire article:
Some much needed humor on a tense day.
Not sure if someone has already posted about this or linked to it but Poblano has once again shown his absolute brilliance and the result is pure genius. Check out the link below - he has created a spreadsheet to examine the total popular vote for Senator Obama and Senator Clinton according to a variety of scenarios - 972 permutations according to his calculation - fascinating:
Kudos to you Poblano.
