What Digby Says: Rush's Law
Wed Jun 28, 2006 at 07:16:59 AM PDT
Today's post by digby
Rush's Law exceeds even Digby's normal superb standards for putting into words thoughts and feelings I am simply not able of writing down.
Rush Limbaugh is a leading figure in modern American media. He has helped shape our media into what it is today, for better and (mostly) worse. This makes his latest run-in with the law, and the implications of his conduct in the Dominican Republic this past weekend, worthy of massive public comment.
E-BAY Comes Out in Support of Net Neutrality!
Thu Jun 01, 2006 at 02:31:15 PM PDT
Today, as a registered Seller on E-Bay, I received an e-mail from the E-Bay President and CEO Meg Whitman making a strong case for Net neutrality. Ms Whitman has come out very strongly in support of blocking passage of any bill(s) that would allow the telephone and cable companies to create a "two-tiered" system of network access.
I think this is an excellent and well written letter that clearly explains what the Telecoms are attempting to accomplish. I will post the letter in its entirety:
AT&T Cites National Security on Phone Records Release
Tue May 16, 2006 at 11:46:57 AM PDT
AT&T claims National Security issues as reason for not discussing release of private phone records
This past Friday, May 12, I sent an e-mail to my long-distance carrier AT&T regarding release of phone records to the NSA. it was sent to their customer resolution group via the AT&T website. My e-mail:

High Gas Taxes Is The Wrong Approach
Wed Apr 19, 2006 at 12:49:59 PM PDT
As much as I respect Jerome a Paris's diaries, I consider his current diary
Gas prices - what's the right strategy for the Dems?, arguing for high gas prices as a way to solve US energy demand, to be the worse possible approach for Democrats and our country.
Using the European model of high gasoline taxes as a basis for reducing American demand for fuel is a non-starter. There is a world of difference between European cities and American cities that directly relates to transportation.
Trent Lott: Once (and Future?) Majority Leader
Tue Mar 21, 2006 at 10:44:49 AM PDT
There was an interesting article in the Galveston, Texas, newspaper "The Daily News," on Mississippi senator Trent Lott's intention of taking back the Senate Majority leader post next year (
Lott might run for majority leader post).
Among other tidbits, he back-stabs Frisk and claims to want more senate oversight of the White House.
Immigration: My Living Nightmare of HR 4437
Wed Mar 15, 2006 at 10:01:02 AM PDT
Yesterday's news of our DHS announcing that
very soon all illegal Chinese immigrants who could not be returned to China would be locked up in
concentration camps detention centers,
with their families deeply upset me.
It was as if I had just read a bad horror story, looked away from the book, and saw the monster standing in front of me. Like a nightmare that I can't wake up from. You see, for me immigration issues cut right to the core of what I believe in. Immigration rights sit on the right hand next to free speech and freedom of/from religion.
Immigrants: Lock 'Em Up With Their Kids
Tue Mar 14, 2006 at 03:18:26 PM PDT
There's been ongoing discussion these past weeks over news that the Department of Homeland Security awarded no-bid contracts to Halliburton and KRB to build massive detention centers. Here on DKos there's been speculation as to who the DHS would actually put in these massive camps, "Should they be used."
Now we know. Today, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has announced these detention centers will (at least for now) be used to house illegal Chinese immigrants. Not just the actual adults that are here in the US illegally, but Entire Families.
Mississippi Follows SD on Abortion Ban
Wed Mar 01, 2006 at 03:36:37 PM PDT
In other breaking news...
It seems the wolves are circling ever closer now that the Fundi's choice for SCOTUS is on the job. Mississippi is becoming the second state to propose legistation to ban ALL abortions except for when the life of the mother is threatened. No exemptions for health issues, rape or incest.
Mississippi advances bill to ban most abortions
Katrina Aftermath: The Mississippi Numbers
Thu Feb 16, 2006 at 07:12:42 AM PDT
From today's edition of our local Knight-Ridder newspaper
The Sun Herald comes this timely front page editorial
MISSISSIPPI'S INVISIBLE COAST
The editorial's lede:
As Aug. 29 recedes into the conscious time of many Americans, the great storm that devastated 70 miles of Mississippi's Coast, destroying the homes and lives of hundreds of thousands, fades into a black hole of media obscurity.
Never mind that, if taken alone, the destruction in Mississippi would represent the single greatest natural disaster in 229 years of American history. The telling of Katrina by national media has created the illusion of the hurricane's impact on our Coast as something of a footnote.
Katrina Aftermath: PTSD and Welfare Queens
Thu Feb 09, 2006 at 08:27:59 AM PDT
I've been trying to put into diary the gauntlet of emotions I've experienced these past months in dealing with the aftermath of Katrina. Over the past few days, reading about people being evicted from FEMA hotel housing, and reading DKossian comments along the themes of "Katrina Welfare Queens," I decided I needed to write this all out.

Scarborough Compares Howard Dean With Osama
Wed Jan 25, 2006 at 05:34:33 AM PDT
In Today's MSNBC,
Joe Scarborough follows on Cris Mathew's trend of smearing Democrats by association with Bin Laden. Bin Laden being the number one enemy of the US who has successfully hid from Preznit Bush for almost five years.
Repub Governor Saw A Tax Cut He Didn't Like
Thu Jan 19, 2006 at 06:41:51 AM PDT
Yesterday, our Repug Mississippi governor, former RNC chair, former GOP Lobbyist, former Washington lobbyist for tobacco companies, the one and only Gov. Haley Barbour, was presented with a tax cut and vetoed it!
I DON'T CARE ABOUT TERRORISTS!
Mon Dec 19, 2005 at 08:47:00 PM PDT
Okay folks, it's late at night, I'm up way past my bedtime, but feel a serious need to rant so I finally can sleep without first consuming mass quantities of rum.
My rant comes from listening/reading/hearing people for three days now debate whether our preznit broke the law wiretapping American citizens without even the fig leaf of non-protection the FISA provides.
My rant comes from everyone; I mean EVERYONE, somewhere in their talking points include the statement to the effect "Of Course I Care About Combating Terrorism."
Well Folks, at the risk of having all of wingnuttia flame me, I want to say right now, for the record, I DON'T FUCKING CARE ABOUT COMBATTING TERRORISM."
So please continue reading below the fold, if you dare.
Katrina News: Trent Lott Sues His Insurance Company
Fri Dec 16, 2005 at 08:37:58 AM PDT
As reported by several sources, including the local Knight-Ridder paper "
The Sun Herald," Sen Trent Lott has opened a lawsuit against State Farms Insurance Company for refusal to cover Hurricane Katrina damage.
Sen Lott's home was located in Pascagoula, Mississippi, on the beach front facing the Mississippi Sound, within sight of Northrop-Grumman's (Formerly Ingalls) Shipyard. It was essentially leveled by hurricane Katrina, as was every other house along the beachfront (as was every building several blocks inland).
The War on Christmas: Music Front w/Poll
Mon Dec 12, 2005 at 10:51:50 AM PDT
It's the time of year when the Blue-State Left Wing Conspiracy (BSLWC) sets aside all the other many battles being fought against the Red-State forces of decency and family values, and concentrate on the real battle: The war against Christmas.
It's truly a war out there, being defended by the likes of Bill O'Reilly and other champions of decent family values. But based on their ranting, I do believe BSLWC attackers are winning.
BREAKING: FEMA Discovers Hurricane Katrina! Global Warming For Real!
Sat Dec 10, 2005 at 01:52:00 PM PDT
Okey, a bit of snark in my headine... Seriously though, I wanted to bring this info to the attention of DKossians still following news about Hurricane Katrina. FEMA has just published on-line the first set of flood maps and a detailed analysis of Hurricane Katrina, and provides links to a NOAA webpage that shows correlation between the increasing strength of hurricanes and increases in land and ocean tempertures.
