WWMD

Sun Jul 06, 2008 at 05:23:04 PM PDT

American Christians in the 1990’s elevated the simple abbreviation WWJD to a sort of daily reminder of where their moral compass should be. "What Would Jesus Do?" said so much to them in those four words because the background of Jesus, the quotations by him of how to live a righteous life and help the less fortunate, etc. (Side note, the original phrase started in the 1890’s by Charles Sheldon and actually espoused a Socialist Christian advocacy.)

I think a more apt line of thinking these days is WWMD – What W Might Do? (and then do the opposite)

US Contractors train torture in Mexico

Sat Jul 05, 2008 at 05:39:18 PM PDT

An appalling discovery of US private contractors training the Mexican army in torture has received little attention in the United States despite the underlying issue about the influence of companies such as Blackwater Worldwide and Dynocorp establishing torture techniques abroad. The videos which surfaced in Mexico show an English speaking man directing actions against fellow officers.

In one video, Special Tactical Group officers squirt mineral water up the nose of another officer, a torture technique commonly utilized by Mexican police. The man's head is also shoved into a hole which supposedly contains rats and feces

In the other, the unidentified contractor drags an officer through a puddle of his own vomit as punishment for failure to complete a training exercise. The company involved in this tape is currently unknown.

Warning, the videos contain graphic images.

John Cornyn loses key 43,000-strong endorsement

Fri Jun 27, 2008 at 04:15:02 PM PDT

The Texas Medical Association, which represents 43,000 doctors and medical students in the state, has withdrawn support for John Cornyn after the Senator helped block legislation that would delay a 10.6-percent cut in physicians’ Medicare fees. The Medicare bill failed on a single vote.

Inhofe is on to "Hollywood special interests"

Tue Jun 24, 2008 at 04:46:57 PM PDT

Jim "I hate polar bears" Inhofe knows we'd love nothing more than to dethrone the Great Denier.

With a week left in June, Inhofe is sending out emails stating that he is about $20,000 away from his June fundraising goal. In the same email he warns about "Hollywood special interests" (read: Barbara Boxer's PAC for a Change) threatening to dump money into the race. Inhofe may deny the fundamentals of climate change but he isn't denying the pressure, financial or otherwise, that he will feel in this race.

By now I'm sure most everyone is familiar with PAC for a Change. In any case, let's help send Jimmy packing. If you haven't already, vote for Andrew Rice at PAC for a Change or contribute directly to Andrew Rice's campaign.

Go on, you know you are a "Hollywood special interest."

GOP: Obama like any other politician

Sat Jun 21, 2008 at 11:02:29 PM PDT

John McCain and the GOP are running scared. The first candidate on the Democratic ticket with a spine in a generation has so far refused to lie down and take it from the so-called "Republican attack machine."

On the contrary, Barack Obama has put himself on the offensive to frame the issues in his favor, from helping big city mayors and federal disaster prevention to national security, Obama's entrance into General Election campaign mode has Republicans crying foul on mean 'ol Obama.

God & W. Ordain Torture: The GWOT

Wed Jun 18, 2008 at 09:47:45 AM PDT

General William G. Boykin (ret.), implementer of US torture policies in Iraq under Donald Rumsfeld:

Here's the way I want to enter the gates of Heaven. I want to come skidding in there on all fours. I want to be slipping and sliding and I want to hit the gates of heaven with a bang. And when I stand up and I stand before Christ, I want there to be blood on my knees and my elbows. I want to be covered with mud. And I want to be standing there with a ragged breast plate of righteousness. And a spear in my hand. And I want to say, "Look at me, Jesus. I've been in the battle. I've been fighting for you." Ladies and gentlemen, put your armor on and get into battle. God bless you.

A Tortured Argument: Victory in Iraq

Tue Jun 17, 2008 at 07:25:02 AM PDT

I'd like to offer an intellectual excercise and possibly challenge some of your preconceived notions regarding Iraq. Now that it is clear the time is ready for us to start leaving, I want to take a look back to when things were much worse.

The Federal Reserve's secret illegal meeting with banks

Sun Jun 15, 2008 at 10:50:29 PM PDT

Inner City Press/Community on the Move filed an administrative complaint against the Federal Reserve Sunday demanding information about a closed-door meeting held earlier this month with the Clearing Corp. (made up of all the top investment banks) where new rules were made for the $60 TRILLION credit default swaps market.

The Administrative Procedures Act (5 U.S.C. Section 553) and related laws require that when the government engaged in rule-making, it must provide notice to the public, and allow and weigh public comments.

Republicans and reverse racism

Sat Jun 14, 2008 at 10:03:28 PM PDT

In attempt to throw jabs to see which one can stick and not become overtly racist in the process, an often-used line lately is that African Americans don't actually know Obama's policies or positions (a subtle assault on their intelligence) but are only voting for him because he is black (Aha! THEY are the racists!)

Stop, Obama Time

Fri Jun 13, 2008 at 08:00:00 PM PDT

In light of Tim Russert's untimely death and all the negativity towards Obama by the fearmongers I thought now was as good a time as ever to take a step back and smile.

These aren't exactly new videos but in any case I don't think they are as widely known as Obama Girl for instance, if you have already seen these sorry but if not I hope you enjoy.

John McCain and the attack on Liberty

Sat Jun 07, 2008 at 06:50:14 AM PDT

41 years ago a tragedy occurred. During Israeli's Six-Day War, the USS Liberty was attacked and 32 U.S. sailors were killed. Did Israel know it was a U.S. ship before they attacked? Did John McCain and his father among others help cover it up? The truth may shock you.

Mexican-American Petróleo and the GOP Machine

Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 10:50:10 PM PDT

There is a topic of great importance that raises many issues but is not widely discussed. In the next 2 years, the implications of national sovereignty, foreign policy, bilateral trade, gas prices and Big Oil’s investments of profit, U.S. domestic drilling and energy independence, even immigration and the environment will need to be addressed because of something called a transboundary reservioir.
