Protesting in DC this weekend? Know your rights!

Mon Sep 19, 2005 at 10:56:29 PM PDT

[editor's note, by rioduran] This is about the DC law applying to DC Metro police action during protests in DC. If you read the post and the links, you will notice that this is not a Federal law nor am I trying to say that it is. DC Metro police are in charge of keeping the peace during protests in DC. As far as Fed conduct during protests on Fed property (which I believe mainly would be buildings or certain parts of monument grounds, etc., anybody know?) that is a different matter. But what most people don't realize is that anything that goes on in DC politically, including Inauguration, requires quite a bit of coordination and planning and cleanup from DC Metro authorities. The Feds like to hold their parties and stick the city of DC with the bill.

Katrina to Bush: "Who's the bitch now?!?!"

Fri Sep 02, 2005 at 07:44:41 PM PDT

I used to have a bumper sticker on my car that said "Plan to Improvise." I thought it was funny and it seemed to be the way I lived my life--no matter how much planning I did, something strange would happen and I'd have to improvise anyway. Well it looks like the Bush Administration and Congress have told the American people, not in so many words, that we're on our own. We should just plan to improvise, because they can't be bothered with planning for natural disaster relief. No, we need to pray to God to keep from sending hurricanes our way like Pat Robertson does. That seems to be the extent of this administration's disaster relief planning.

But Katrina more than made a statement. She made a mockery. Katrina to Bush: "Who's the bitch now?!?!"

Rescuing my son from Red State Hell, WWII vet's opinion of Iraq

Sat Aug 13, 2005 at 02:38:01 PM PDT

My son just spent a month with relatives in Alabama. He is a smart kid whom I've always taught to think for himself. He's fourteen now and makes me proud, especially when he doesn't shy away from political discussions with the Bush zombies.

For instance, he began to interview my grandfather, a WWII vet, former Navy Seabee. He didn't ask him questions about WWII, specifically. Instead, he asked this wise man what he thought about the current conflict in Iraq.

I was so close to Scotty I could've spit on him! (w/poll)

I saw White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan tonight in D.C., up close and almost personal. I was mere feet away from him. Too bad he was tucked safely inside his behemoth SUV, or I'd have asked him some tough questions....

It Can't Happen Here [book review]

Mon Jun 27, 2005 at 06:28:55 PM PDT

I finally finished reading It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis and I thought I'd diary the similarities between the book and current events.

I could've sworn half the time I was reading straight out of Rove's playbook. I'm sure he's read this book before and taken quite a few cues. Such as this one:

An honest propagandist for any Cause, that is, one who honestly studies and figures out the most effective way of putting over his Message, will learn fairly early that it is not fair to ordinary folks--it just confuses them--to try to make them swallow all the true facts that would be suitable to a higher class of people. And one seemingly small but almighty important point he learns, if he does much speechifying, is that you can win over folks to your point of view much better in the evening, when they are tired out from work and not so likely to resist you, than at any other time of day.

How's that for spooky?

I met a LIBERAL, ACTIVIST, Independent filmmaker!!!

Sun Jun 26, 2005 at 02:41:20 PM PDT

I was out for my Sunday errands today when I found myself driving to a clothing store I hadn't planned to visit. But something told me I needed to go in there, so I did.

I found some bargain prices on clothes, so that was all good. But the most interesting thing happened when I went to the checkout counter, and I didn't realize the potential impact until I was driving home.

I was wearing a Macromedia t-shirt, and the cashier asked me how I got it. I said I'd purchased it at last year's Macromedia MAX conference. We chatted for a bit about web design and computer programs and she said she was really into video production.

Then she said the coolest thing: she's currently working on a project for The Congressional Black Caucus and she could really use my help!!!

Exhuming McCarthy [UPDATE]

Wed Jun 22, 2005 at 11:24:15 AM PDT

If you don't think the death of PBS funding is an important issue,
this transcript from NewsHour may give you some perspective.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is a private nonprofit agency created and funded by Congress. This year it distributed $387 million in federal dollars to PBS, NPR, hundreds of public radio and TV stations around the nation, and some individual programs.

In recent months, Tomlinson's words and deeds have stirred up strong responses. Bill Moyers spoke in Washington.

BILL MOYERS: It's not a duel between Kenneth Tomlinson and Bill Moyers. It's a duel between government and journalism. If he is going to remain as chairman of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, he's got to keep his cotton-picking hands off the programming.

[UPDATE] Is this Rush's doing? (photo)

Sun Jun 19, 2005 at 03:09:09 PM PDT

I like to think I have an unusual perspective on the way repugs think, since I grew up in an ultra-conservative household and was once a YR. But that was when I was young and naive and my beliefs were whatever the people around me believed. I was taught not to question authority, but deep down inside, I knew it was my right and my job to question authority. So after my world was turned upside down and I finally saw the truth and saw the hearts of the so-called "Religious Right" I knew they were a bunch of liars and hypocrites who didn't give a flying fuck about anybody but themselves and how they appeared to the other people around them. It's all a big show.

Southern Baptists in `doldrums'

Sat Jun 18, 2005 at 11:19:04 AM PDT

This is my first diary...please be gentle!

Could it be true? Could the largest Protestant organization in the U.S. be realizing something is amiss?

This story on MSNBC, by Alex Johnson...

The Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's biggest Protestant denomination and the largest gathering of evangelical Christians in the world, is in the "doldrums" and faces a challenge to determine whether it is on the right path, its leader said Thursday.
