Protect the CA vote--support Debra Bowen

Wed Oct 18, 2006 at 06:21:27 PM PDT

Fellow Kossacks,

This letter is an appeal for contributions to support California Secretary of State candidate Debra Bowen.  As we did before the primary, we are again collecting contributions to run Spanish-language radio ads.  Getting Debra elected is a huge priority in the Golden State as he has been at the forefront of protecting the vote.  Thanks for any support you can give, no matter how small.  If you can't give money consider volunteering.

CA SoS: Grassroots radio ads for Debra Bowen

Thu Jun 01, 2006 at 07:16:55 AM PDT

Debra Bowen, candidate for California Secretary of State, is in a tight battle for the Democratic nomination on Tuesday.

During her tenure in the State Senate, Debra Bowen has been working tirelessly for reliable voting systems and improving the public's access to the government.  She was overwhelmingly endorsed by the California Democratic Party and by groups and newspapers up and down the Golden State.

You can help Debra Bowen by donating to a grassroots-sponsored radio campaign!  Latinos for America has produced pro-bono Spanish-language radio ads for the Los Angeles market that will run in Spanish talk and religious radio on Monday and Tuesday of next week.  We need your help to get them on the air.

Valley Grassroots for Democracy has teamed up with Latinos for America to collect contributions for the ads. Please go to https:/secure.actblue.com... and make a contribution and end the contribution with $.06 so we know that the contribution is for the radio ads.  For example, give $25.06 or $50.06 or however much you can give.

Brown going home to his wife and dog

Fri Sep 09, 2005 at 12:14:37 PM PDT

Quote of the day from Michael Brown:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9266986/

"I'm going to go home and walk my dog and hug my wife and, maybe get a good Mexican meal and a stiff margarita and a full night's sleep. And then I'm going to go right back to FEMA and continue to do all I can to help these victims," Brown said. "This story's not about me. This story's about the worst disaster of the history of our country that stretched every government to its limit and now we have to help these victims."

Of course he still has a home, a dog, and a wife to return to.  And he has the money to go out for his fine Mexican meal and margarita.

Maybe if he had done his job right a bunch of people in Louisiana would be doing the same thing tonight...

Wingnuts attack gay right to "love"

Wed Feb 02, 2005 at 11:45:25 AM PDT

So now the winguts are after the artists who recorded a CD for the Human Rights Campaign.  Why?  Because the CD is named "Love Rocks" and Dobson has a problem with the word "love" in the title.

http://www.theconservativevoice.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=2416

But Focus on the Family's Melissa Fryrear, a former lesbian [!!!], said the CD's use of the word "love" is deceptive.

"'Love' is one of the Trojan horses for the acceptance of homosexuality," Fryrear, a gender issues analyst, said in an e-mail to Baptist Press. "Gay activists are trying to find an argument that carries emotional weight: 'love,' after all, sounds good to everyone.

"The problem, though, is their definition of 'love' is carefully camouflaged to mean more than Cupid ever meant it to mean. Their definition is meant to mean the acceptance and the celebration of homosexuality."

Ok, so they have attacked our right to marry.  Now is our right to love next?

And you can get to the CD from a link here: http://www.hrcactioncenter.org/actioncenter/our_love_rocks.html

(Los Angeles) Daily News endorses Kerry

Mon Oct 25, 2004 at 10:34:16 AM PDT

I never thought the day would come when the conservative Daily News, based in the San Fernando Valley, would endorse Kerry, but they have:

http://www.dailynews.com/Stories/0,1413,200~25405~2487608,00.html

To wage an effective war on terrorism, we must restore national unity and repair our damaged international alliances.

And the candidate best able to do that is Sen. John Kerry.[...]

A house divided against itself, Abraham Lincoln once famously warned, cannot stand. Under Bush, America has grown increasingly divided. And the alliance of nations that should be united against terror has likewise grown divided. New leadership is our best bet for bringing the country back together and forging the unity that we cannot win the war without.

Kerry offers us the chance for a new beginning, and throughout the past year's grueling campaign, he has demonstrated the toughness necessary to lead the country in a time of war.

John Kerry offers the change that America needs for the next four years. But more importantly, at a time when the nation and the world need it most, he offers hope.

Enough to blow up every plane 53 times over

Mon Oct 25, 2004 at 08:57:04 AM PDT

As of November, 2002, Boeing had produced 10,903 commercial jets from the 707 through the 777.  Airbus had produced 3,043 from the A300 through the A340.  That's a total of 13,946 planes.

If 740,000 pounds of explosives are missing and it takes about a pound to blow up a plane (as happened with Pan Am 103), that means the amount of missing explosives is enough to blow up every Boeing and Airbus jet ever manufacturered 53 times over!

Now try saying that this isn't a big deal.

(edit: I did my math wrong. it's 53 times over, not 55.)

Cheney admits he lied about meeting Edwards

Wed Oct 06, 2004 at 08:54:58 AM PDT

From the AP:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,134589,00.html

CLEVELAND -- Vice President Dick Cheney said Tuesday night that the debate with Democratic Sen. John Edwards marked the first time they had met. In fact, the two had met at least three times previously. [...]

Edwards didn't forget their prayer-breakfast meeting. The Democratic vice presidential candidate noted the discrepancy at a post-debate rally in a Cleveland park, calling it an example of Cheney "still not being straight with the American people."

"The vice president said that the first time I met Senator Edwards was tonight when we walked on the stage. I guess he forgot the time we sat next to each other for a couple hours about three years ago. I guess he forgot the time we met at the swearing in of another senator. So, my wife Elizabeth reminded him on the stage," Edwards said as the crowd roared.

According to Edwards' staff, Cheney replied, "Oh, yeah."

Dreier outed in LA Weekly

Thu Sep 23, 2004 at 05:33:37 AM PDT

The story in the LA Weekly outing David Dreier (R-CA) is out (the one Raw Story alluded to).  There's not a lot that we haven't already seen here and on blogactive.

The implications for Dreier are pretty much summed up in the last paragraph:

Dreier can probably survive outing in his district and be re-elected, and it won't hurt him much with Arnold and his cronies either. But Dreier's days as a key member of the ultra-homophobic Hastert-DeLay House GOP leadership may be numbered. The telegenic Dreier has often served as the GOP leadership's spokesman on the TV chat-show circuit. It will be interesting to see whether, the next time Dreier shows up on Crossfire or Chris Matthews' show, he's asked about the contradictions between his anti-gay voting record and his hitherto-secret life.

Kerry should debate a Bush stand-in

Wed Sep 08, 2004 at 07:21:48 AM PDT

I think Bush has found out about the World's Shortest Blog and is afraid someone will ask the question, so that's why he doesn't want to debate in the town hall format.

Kerry should take pointers from a debate for candidates in CA-49, the district currently represented by recall financier and indicted felon Darrell Issa.  Issa was invited to the debate but refused to attend.

After the debate, candidates [Democrat Mike] Byron and [Libertarian Lars] Grossmith posed with a "stand-in" for candidate Issa, a bright red, live hen. The hen did not offer any profound political opinions that could be interpreted by the attendees, preferring instead to attend to the privatized provision of oats that had been scattered on the tabletop for its personal consumption, generously provided by a private donor and therefore at no cost to the hen or to the taxpayers. However, the attendees were appreciative that the Republican candidate was at least represented in absentia in the "flesh" and with a fair amount of pizzazz, for a politician, and at no taxpayer expense, which is unusual for a Republican politician. The donation, of course, will be listed on the hen's second-quarter financial statement to the Federal Election Commission.

250,000 apply for 3,000 temp jobs

Wed Aug 18, 2004 at 07:27:25 AM PDT

Welcome to the Bush Economy!

According to an article in today's LA Times, up to 250,000 applications were mailed in for 3,000 temporary longshore jobs at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.  Of course the reason for this is because of the flood of cheap imports to supply places like Walmart.  On the TV news this morning someone was quoted as saying that this was the only place that was hiring other than Walmart.

From the article:

The 3,000 slots, which are being offered to help handle a record amount of cargo coming through the ports, will pay $20.66 to $28 an hour -- substantially higher than the average $8.38-an-hour entry-level wage in Los Angeles County. On Friday, the state reported that California's employers cut a net 17,300 jobs in July, illustrating how cautious many businesses remain when it comes to hiring.

"It's very rare in this economy, particularly for non-college-educated positions," to be so lucrative, said Michael Mische, a principal at WCL Consulting Co. of Long Beach and an adjunct professor of management at the USC Marshall School of Business. "These are highly desirable jobs, with the opportunity of becoming skilled in a vocation" that could lead to better things down the road.

231 care packages headed for the troops

Sat Jul 31, 2004 at 08:41:25 PM PDT

The other day I posted that Valley for Democracy and the Democratic Party of the San Fernanado Valley was having a care package event where we were making up and sending care packages to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We had about 100 people make 231 care packages.  We had donations of boxes and all kinds of stuff to put in the boxes, as well as donations of money for postage.  We had a postal truck come by twice to pick up all of the packages.  There was a lot of leftover stuff and we hope to have another event in the near future.  We may need some help with covering postage costs, but we won't know until the post office finishes metering the packages on Monday.  If you would like to help with postage costs send me an email at webmaster@valleyfordemocracy.com.

We had media coverage from KNX Newsradio and KNBC Channel 4.  State Sen. Richard Alarcon, who is running for mayor of LA, spoke and, when he started to help people put their boxes together, the TV camera was right there to catch it.  I figured that he would stop when the news crew left.  But he stuck around for another hour helping people out.  I was already leaning towards supporting him (he was an early Dean supporter and did a lot for our local Dean grassroots campaign) but that pretty much decided it for me.

Dean told me he likes Edwards

Wed Jul 07, 2004 at 05:50:29 AM PDT

Last night I volunteered at a DFA2 fundraiser in LA.  After schmoozing with the VIPs, Gov. Dean came downstairs to thank the volunteers.  I had had my picture taken with him before so I was taking pictures of him with the other volunteers.  Then he asked if I wanted my picture taken and I said OK.

While someone else was trying to figure out my camera I said "The next time you see John Kerry, tell him he made a great choice" and he said "I think he made a great choice, too."

Vandalism at the Ronald Reagan Medical Center

Fri Jul 02, 2004 at 10:57:22 AM PDT

I work at UCLA and the old medical center was damaged in the 1994 Northridge earthquake and a new hospital is being built.    It will be named the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.  There hasn't been a whole lot of publicity about the name because Reagan was neither a friend to the University of California as governor or to health care in general.  There is an article in the Daily Bruin that explains why it was named after Reagan (basically, friends gave the UC $150m)

http://www.dailybruin.ucla.edu/news/articles.asp?id=29642

Right after Reagan died, two of these signs were erected in front of the construction site, one on the Westwood Plaza side (in the middle of campus) and the other on Gayley Ave, which faces a public street.

I drove down Gayley this morning (not part of my normal driving route) and the sign had been turned around to show bare plywood.  I don't know why, I imagine it was either the bad press about the name or it had been vandalized.  There are frat houses across the street, after all.

But spraypainted on the plywood in huge letters was:
"Future home of the Bill Clinton Medical Center"

Ah, a vandal with a political bent :-)

Fahrenheit 911 theater listing

Sat Jun 12, 2004 at 02:23:17 PM PDT

The list of theaters that will be showing Fahrenheit 911 is now available at http://www.f911tix.com/.  It's scheduled to open on June 25, though that might change (see below).

So now that you know where it will be playing, you have a couple of weeks to get your group, Kerry literature, and voter registration forms together!

In related news, an article in today's LA Times that it will be rated R, but Moore is challenging the rating.  Leave it to Jack Valenti and our friends at the MPAA to try to limit viewership.  The story also said that execs at Lions Gate are trying to change the opening date to June 23.
