Cowardly Scott McClellan Retracts Allegation about Bush
Wed Nov 21, 2007 at 12:58:32 PM PDT
Right now the recommended list features several diaries regarding an alleged excerpt of former White House spokesperson Scott McClellan's forthcoming book. From that excerpt, it appeared that McClellan was alleging Bush knew his staff had outed CIA agent Valerie Plame and had lied about it:
Amid a swelling controversy about the leak of Valerie Wilson's name, McClellan went to the White House podium in October 2003 and told reporters that Karl Rove, the president's top political adviser, and Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Cheney's chief of staff, had not been involved. . .
There was one problem. It was not true," McClellan writes in his new book, "What Happened," which is to be released in April. "I had unknowingly passed along false information. And five of the highest ranking officials in the administration were involved in my doing so: Rove, Libby, the vice president, the president's chief of staff and the president himself."
Explosive stuff, huh? Sure is.
Too bad McClellan is nothing more than a coward engaging in a cheap PR stunt. He has now disavowed that Bush knew about the outing.
IAEA: Iran has Diverted No Nuclear Material for Weapons
Sat Nov 17, 2007 at 01:44:28 PM PDT
Reading the Washington Post and New York Times stories about the International Atomic Energy Agency report (PDF) on the Iranian nuclear program, one could easily conclude that Iran has been surreptitiously moving forward with wholesale development of nuclear weapons.
The problem with both articles is that they bury what should be the lede: the IAEA report indicates that Iran has never diverted any nuclear material to a weapons program.
The Lawyers
Fri Nov 16, 2007 at 01:09:53 PM PDT
On Wednesday, November 14, American lawyers all over the country stood in solidarity with their Pakistani counterparts, marching to courthouses to protest Musharraf's suspension of Pakistan’s constitution, his placing the Pakistani Supreme Court under house arrest, and his jailing of lawyers, judges, and political opponents.

Chris Dodd's Grave Failure of Leadership on FISA
Wed Oct 24, 2007 at 08:33:17 AM PDT
Last week, on October 18, Markos urged Chris Dodd to "lead" the "fight against FISA capitulation." Markos noted, "Dodd can give himself a nice boost by doing everything possible to put a wrench into this disastrous capitulation."
That same day, Atrios urged his readers to call Dodd and demand a stop to any and all FISA bills that include telecom immunity:
If you think it's important for Dodd to place a hold on any crappy telecom immunity bill that the Senate comes up with, call Dodd campaign headquarters and request they do it.

Why we shouldn't b**ch if the Democrats confirm Mukasey
Sun Sep 16, 2007 at 04:16:17 PM PDT
So it seems pretty clear Bush is going to nominate former federal court Judge Michael Mukasey to be the next Attorney General. At least according to CBS and CNN. (And this diary right here.)
I was wondering what to think about the nomination. Should the democrats permit this to go forward, or would it be better to simply let the interim AG to remain?
Glenn Greenwald answered the question for me.
Obama to Bush: you have no authorization for war with Iran
Wed Sep 12, 2007 at 09:50:52 AM PDT
I know there are two good diaries summarizing excerpts of Obama's "Iraq War" speech, here and here, but I just noticed the Huffington Post has additional excerpts, this time about the administration's escalating rhetoric about an additional war with Iran.
