Okay so I am doing my obligatory daily check-in on my facebook account today and among the pics of friends kids and the fabulous lives that all our friends are leading, i find a pro-gun post by a former co-worker that boldly claims: GUN HOMICIDE IS DOWN 49% IN THE LAST 12 YEARS.  ONLY 12% OF AMERICANS KNOW THAT.  TELL US AGAIN HOW UNBIASED OUR MEDIA IS.

I thought to myself, how could that possibly be, given the rash of mass killings we've had the last decade.  So I decided to do a little research on that claim.  It turns out somebody beat me to it.

New Gallup Poll...OMG dumb and dumber

by tvdude

Just the other day, I was thinking back to the things we read and studied in junior high school and high school in the sixties. I remember reading authors like Steinbeck, Hawthorne, and Faulkner in the eighth grade! I couldn't imagine that today!
I have been quite aware that the standard of education has been going steadily downhill for decades now.  We've all seen the studies throughout the years, college freshmen not able to fill out the states on a map  etc....I was wondering where this was all going to lead us as a nation.  A new Gallup poll released this week gives a disturbing snapshot of where we stand collectively as a nation....I warn you it is not pretty.  Proceed over the orange squiggly at your own risk....

Exxon, me and the IRS

by tvdude

We've all heard the stories by now of how corporations like Exxon avoid paying federal income taxes. As a matter of fact in 2009 Exxon managed to pay exactly...zero in federal tax.  There doesn't seem to be much push back from the IRS.  I guess when you have an army of high priced lawyers  the IRS can feel a bit intimidated.  But when it comes to yours truly, well that's a different story, they can get bold, and downright aggressive.  More after the orange deduction......

I had to laugh at all the righteous indignation from Obama and Biden and all the other govt. officials to the use of force against Ukrainian protestors. All the lecturing from U.S. officials to the Ukrainian president on how this is not the way you treat peaceful dissent!
It makes you wonder, where was all this indignation when our own peaceful protests of the Occupy movement were being crushed??  Where was the outrage when those women were being maced on the streets of New York?  Where was the lecturing when peaceful U.c. Davis students were being maced as they were sitting down?  Gosh, I never heard a peep  back then..

Oh, but you can't compare the U.S. reaction to protests to the Ukrainian reaction.  I mean they were using the military to shoot and kill people. You can't compare that to a little mace!   We would never use our military to crush dissent in this country.  Well....not so fast my friend, as Lee Corso woud say on College Game Day.  Follow me over the orange barricade......

On mortal thoughts and the Koch brothers

by tvdude

I have often thought if you didn't have a whole lot of time left on this planet, how important would money really be to you?  I mean, what would you want to do with the precious little time you would have left to enjoy life.  Personally, I would want to spend as much time as I could with my family.  After that, I would go to the ocean every day, and bogey board, and stick my toes in the sand.  I would want to be with nature as much as possible, drink in as much of it as I could.  All of this, of course, does not require any money or much of it anyway.  We all know what North Carolina St. basketball coach Jim Valvano did with his last few days: he laughed, cried, and thought.
http://www.youtube.com/...

Here's the thing, the Koch brothers are in their mid-seventies, how much time do they really have left here?  What are they doing with their last days?  They already have more money than they could possibly spend in 100 lifetimes, let alone what's left of this one, and yet they are still trying to hoard as much money as possible and make sure 99% of us don't make a living wage or properly educate our children.  I chalked all this up to just soul-less bastards who never gave a thought of their own mortality but while watching a short piece on the Koch brothers I received the shock of my life!  More after the orange gravestone....

To paraphrase Hank Williams Monday Night Football intro before he was canned ( for a hate-filled racist anti-Obama rant).   Yes, it is that time of year again for the celebration of that corporate gluttony called the Super Bowl.  Don't get me wrong, I love football, but the sport has long since taken a back seat to the real meaning of the Super Bowl.  It has really  become the time for corporate America to show off.  Follow me over the orange goal-line......

I spent 16 years in the tv news industry. I started off as a sports reporter, then switched to news anchor and reporter.  This spanned the years from the late 70's to the early 90's.  Apparently things were much more civil back then.  It would be pretty much unheard of for a politician to talk to a reporter the way  that nut bag congressman Mike Grimm did after the SOTU speech the other night. Follow me after the orange microphone to see what would  have happened had i been doing that interview.

It has been a long time since FDR uttered that famous phrase in his first inaugural address in 1932 but it couldn't have more relevance in 2014!  Fearseems to be the predominant emotion running through American society today and that my friends is no accident.   An opinion piece in the N.Y. Times entitled "50 States of Fear" by Peter Ludlow outlines how we got to this state and it isn't pretty.  Follow me over the scary looking orange thing..

I am wondering if anyone else has this same thought that I do.  Why do all the so-called liberal and progressive programs i.e.  The Rachel Maddow Show,  The Last Word, The Ed Schultz Show, All in with Chris Hayes and various others feel the compulsion to air clips of Rush Limbaugh almost on a daily basis.  Follow me after the John Boehner tinged squiggly.....

Next Stop Willoughby

by tvdude

is the name of one of my all-time favorite episodes of the iconic series, "The Twilight Zone"  Twilight Zone was not just a sci-fi series, many of the episodes provided biting commentary on the social issues of the day.

This particular episode, I think, is particularly relevant today. AS I am caught up in the daily stress of raising two kids in this economy that is increasingly harsh on the shrinking middle class, I, like the main character in this episode, long for a simpler life unencumbered by the trappings we've all become accustomed to i.e. car payments, insurance payments, low wages and the high cost of just about everything including health insurance.  I am wondering if I can get off this fast train to nowhere like the main character in this episode.  More after the commercial

Where is Will Rogers when you need him?

by tvdude

As the news keeps getting worse, i.e.  the worst income inequality ever, not renewing unemployment beneifts, cutting food stamps, hateful speech (Duck Dynasty), climate change deniers, the Republican party in full cult mode,  I long for someone like Will Rogers to put it all in perspective ( and give us much needed comic relief!!)

What would Will Rogers have said about todays mess??  You know what he already said it...more over the fold

Baah Humbug!

Ok so I am not really an old Uncle Scrooge at heart, but every year it keeps getting harder and harder to maintain that " peace on earth goodwill toward men thing" going..

More after the fold....
