Is Nothing Sacred?

Wed Dec 24, 2008 at 09:32:44 AM PDT

I noted in a CNN story that the Radio Flyer "little red wagon" has been updated:

"Outfitted with 5-point safety harnesses, padded seats, cup holders, foot brakes and fold-out storage containers, the sleek, curved Cloud 9 has every family covered for a ride through the park. But that's just for starters.

There's a digital handle that tracks temperature, time, distance and speed -- just in case energetic parents want to track their split times around the playground. And there's a slot for an MP3 player, complete with speakers, for some cruising tunes."

Some friends and I corresponded on this and came up with this comparison [below the fold]:

A Word to the Wise

Thu Nov 20, 2008 at 11:13:16 AM PDT

I noticed an article at The Register about the Obama websites and the security problems they seem to have. I don't know if anyone from Obama's team reads The Register, but they surely read Kos, so I'm bringing the subject up here.

More details follow.

Yet Another Political Song

Tue Oct 14, 2008 at 01:43:03 PM PDT

That's two for the day, as it happens. I got to humming this on the walk to the subway last week, and put together a draft that day. Back at work today, I finished it (more or less -- no song is truly ever finished; some just escape).

Look below the fold for the lyrics. I don't have a video camera to post it online, alas, but the tune is, I think, related to both "Jesus Saves," and "Be Prepared" (the latter by Tom Lehrer. I think it's close to "Jesus Saves," but I haven't heard that scurrilous ditty for years, so my aural memory is fuzzy.

Anyway, here it is:

Sheriff Introdues Palin while in Uniform

Tue Oct 07, 2008 at 01:14:38 PM PDT

At a recent campaign rally in Florida, the local sheriff, Mike Scott of Lee County, introduced Sarah Palin while wearing his official police uniform. This is a decided no-no, and illegal under federal law (and, I hope, state law). That office receives federal money, I understand, and the word is that the FBI is already investigating.

According to comments on the article on Huffington Post, the sheriff has his own reelection campaign to deal with, and an opponent who is lacking for money.

John McCain's iPod

Tue May 13, 2008 at 01:39:04 PM PDT

A friend of mine asked, in passing, what would be on John McCain's iPod these days, so I thought I'd just ask the community here.

In Honor of Codpiece Day

Tue May 01, 2007 at 07:41:25 AM PDT

I don't know if I've posted this here before or not, but the anniversary of the great flight deck adventure and "Mission Acclompished*" calls me to resurrect this ditty.

Sing along in the key of G (for "Gee, I wish we were shut of this twerp!")

  • I still think that would make a good bumper-sticker. It highlights the incompetence in a (perhaps too-) subtle way.

Who says Gitmo tactics don't work?

Wed Mar 14, 2007 at 09:32:56 PM PDT

The newly-announced "confessions" of Kalid Sheik Mohammed show that imprisonment at Guantanimo works! I mean, whatever technique they used on him (waterboarding? isolation? sleep deprivation? all of the above?) has him singing like a bird, confessing to everything under the sun.

Two concessions today

Thu Nov 09, 2006 at 07:38:44 PM PDT

The two Republican concessions today, of all things, were (are you ready for it?)

A New Ditty -- "DINO Joe"

Fri Aug 11, 2006 at 07:20:24 AM PDT

I am, as most people here are, disgusted with Holy Joe (the rules are for other people) Lieberman. Whatever his other qualities, his appeasement and enabling attitude toward those who have crippled this country for political gain disqualify him from consideration for the US Senate.

It's that simple.

And I say the same thing, in rhyme, after the jump.

George Will, but I won't

Thu Mar 30, 2006 at 08:05:54 AM PDT

I noted in this morning's Washington Post this comment from George Will (emphasis added):

"Within a decade the New York and Washington metropolitan regions will join the Miami, Houston, Los Angeles and San Francisco regions in having majorities made up of minorities, partly because immigrants have higher birthrates than whites. Since 2000, births, not immigration, have been the largest source of growth of America's Latino population."

Latinos aren't white? As in, Caucasian? What are they? Red? Green? They certainly aren't African or Asian.

Gotta stop waking to NPR!

Wed Mar 22, 2006 at 08:25:42 AM PDT

I wake up to NPR every morning -- it's better than an alarm clock, and the weather and traffic reports are nice to have. I actually like the content, because the pieces are more thorough than you'd get on an all-news station (not to mention no commercials).

But every once in a while I hear something that just hits my "what the hell did they just say?" button, and this morning was another. They had a professor on who was talking about Feingold's censure measure and presidential rights vs. Constitutional authority.

Here's what he said at one point (paraphrased):

Maura Liasson Suddenly "Gets It?"

Thu Jan 26, 2006 at 07:11:30 PM PDT

Listening to "Morning Edition" this morning, I was amazed to hear Maura Liasson remark, after a Republican remark about Democrats not wanting terrorists to be wiretapped, "This is not true." I almost fell over to hear it, and just went to the NPR website to find it.

On NPR This Morning, Some Light on the Subject

Fri Dec 02, 2005 at 08:20:08 AM PDT

NPR seems to have regained a sense of balance, to judge by what they've been reporting of late. Here's an example.

From POGOblog, an oddity

Wed Oct 26, 2005 at 07:15:41 AM PDT

I was reading POGOblog (Project on Government Oversight -- pogoblog.typepad.com) and ran across this oddity.

Libby Leaked Plame's Name to Oklahoma Indie Rock Band

File this one under bizarre, but POGO pal LC was listening to the Starlight Mints, an Oklahoma band often compared to the Flaming Lips, and noticed that Track 5 of one of their CDs is titled, "Valerie Flames."

I wonder if any of the folks who wrote "Valerie Flame" may have heard this album, and subliminally substituted "Flame" for "Plame?"

Naahh... life may be strange, but that's ridiculous!

Ed
