Clinton: "I'd love to talk to Rush" Limbaugh

Yesterday, on the Keith Larson show on WBT-Charlotte, Keith was joking around with Hillary Clinton about putting he through to Rush Limbaugh.  To which Clinton replied, "I'd love to talk to Rush".

Obama is god - the Houston rally

I was at the Toyota Center last night to see Obama speak.  It was the second Presidential election rally I've ever been to - the first being Bill Clinton at Tranquility Park in '92.  And I was struck by something that happened right before Obama came out...

Journalism at its finest.  I hit the CNN.com homepage and came across a link to this story about yesterday's races.  The link text was also the headline:  McCain leads handily, Dems deadlocked after contests.

Now, if you were just skimming the headlines, how would YOU think the contests turned out yesterday?

Blog Moratorium - Week 7

Has it really been almost 2 months?  I must say, after the first couple of weeks, it wasn't too difficult avoiding the political blogs.  After I deleted them from my Feed reader, it was just a matter of replacing them other non-politcal feeds... or (gasp!) non-Internet activity.

One of the things I've done is, instead of listening to NPR or AAR, I listen to audiobooks in my car.  I try to mix it up with a bit of fiction, some classics, and personal development stuff.

So how uninformed am I?

Back story here.

It's a strange situation.  I've become so accustomed to reading my blog feeds every morning, that I find myself with extra time that needs to be filled.  I haven't given up on ALL blogs, though -- just politcal ones.  And even then, Dave Winer usually has a post or two a day about something political... but if I just avoid those, I'll be okay.

I need a break from political blogs...

I've decided to try a little experiment:  I'm swearing off political blogs until January 1st, 2008.  However, I'm going to try and post quasi-regularly to dKos, and give updates as to what "regular" people are talking about.

From the Galveston County Daily News:
While admiring [Ron Paul's] idealism, we believe that Paul's district gets punished, even with a GOP majority, when federal dollars are divided.
[...]

Sklar's campaign has been about putting ideology aside and focusing on the financial needs of the district.

He points out that Galveston County has a tradition of representation by strong congressmen, such as Jack Brooks and Tom DeLay, who disagreed wildly on political philosophy but who were aggressive in pursuing federal dollars for the district.

This is a choice in approaches to government.

Our view is that Galveston County's interest would be best served by Sklar.

TX-14: Polls?

Polling is rarely an accurate reflection of how the actual vote will come out, but it does help with seeing trends.  These trends, in turn, are a great motivation to some of the most important people in the campaign: the volunteer.

I'm no Shane Sklar insider or anything, but I (and a few fellow Dems in my area) try to help out in any way that I can.  But since I'm not in constant contact with the Sklar campaign, outside of the email list and various functions, I tend to rely on local newspapers and websites to get information on how it's going.  Sadly, that information is almost zero...

Sending sexually explicit emails/IMs to minors is bad, but...

That anyone would utter anything even close to that is not only morally reprehensible, but just outright stupid.  Yet, that's what is has come to.  Many Republicans/conservative pundits have actually put themselves into the box of defending a child sex predator... and they seem to be convinced it's a winning move.

The 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and specifically Section 1, guarantees that those people born in the U.S. will be considered U.S. citizens.
Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.

No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

Sympathy for the Iranian young adults.

I was listening to BBC radio's Newshour this morning, and there was an amazing interview with three young Iranians.  I'm not sure why, but it moved me beyond belief.  There's all this talk about "attack Iran" or "don't attack Iran",  but I sometimes forget that this situation goes beyond America's credibility in the rest of the world -- these are REAL people, who sound an awful lot like me.

The audio is available in Real streaming format only... so I created a quick movie for YouTube here.  It has the 7 minutes of audio, with some pictures of Tehran fading in and out.  Please listen/watch.

Sometimes it feels like writing letters/making calls to my elected officials isn't enough to protest this horrible path it seems we're going down once again.  I wish I could grab everyone by the shoulders and shout "wake up!".

US Government incompetence in Lebanon evacuations

First, a personal note:  I have a good friend of Lebanese descent - her parents came to the US in the late 60's, and she was born here a few years later.  It was only late last year that she was able to visit Beirut, and meet family (including her grandmothers) who she had only known through phone calls and letters.  On her return, she was beaming with happiness, and immediately planned to go back during this summer.  Unfortunately, other issues have prevented that... but when I first read about the American tourists trapped in Lebanon, I thought, "That could've been her".

On Thursday, I believed the US government would do everything it could to get our citizens out of harms way, and quickly.  Well, it's 6 days later...

As near as I can tell, it all started (at least publicly) in May of 2003.  In a memo from the DLC, From and Reed decided the best course of action for the Democrats was to attack other Democrats.

What activists like [Gov. Howard] Dean call the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party is an aberration: the McGovern-Mondale wing, defined principally by weakness abroad and elitist, interest-group liberalism at home. That's the wing that lost 49 states in two elections, and transformed Democrats from a strong national party into a much weaker regional one.

You may have read the disgusting story about a group in the Netherlands that wants to create a political party aimed at legalizing pedophilia.  Now it looks like World Nut Daily has picked up the story, and right-wing blogs are weighing-in...

Mollohan's coverage on CNN.com

Reading over CNN.com story about Mollohan, I was struck by this paragraph:
While Mollohan's troubles threaten to become a major campaign problem for Democrats, Pelosi, of California, said in a statement that Mollohan decided on his own to step down and that she accepted his decision.
Oh really?  Mollahan's troubles were going to be a MAJOR problem?  For ALL Democrats?

I know it's a small issues, but after reading this quasi-love letter to Rove, it just makes me think, "what are they talking about?"  If ONE Democrat with problems is going to be a major issue for other Democrats, how will the numerous Republicans with legal problems affect all the other Repubs?

Tom DeLay not hurt by legal troubles - media reports.

The media in the Houston/Galveston area are reporting on a theme that "Tom Delay wasn't hurt by his legal troubles".  In fact the Houston Chronicle's front page link to their story about the primary says "U.S. House: Troubles don't hurt DeLay in 22nd"... and ABC13's story has a caption to a Delay picture saying "Tom DeLay won the primary by a wide margin...".
