Dem. Controlled House to Work Longer; Republicans Whine
Wed Dec 06, 2006 at 06:52:53 AM PDT
From the Washington Post today:
Rep. Steny H. Hoyer, flanked by fellow House leaders Rahm Emanuel and Nancy Pelosi, says Democrats are trying to repair the image of Congress.
Rep. Steny H. Hoyer, the Maryland Democrat who will become House majority leader and is writing the schedule for the next Congress, said members should expect longer hours than the brief week they have grown accustomed to.
"I have bad news for you," Hoyer told reporters. "Those trips you had planned in January, forget 'em. We will be working almost every day in January, starting with the 4th."
(snip)
For lawmakers, it is awful, compared with what they have come to expect. For much of this election year, the legislative week started late Tuesday and ended by Thursday afternoon -- and that was during the relatively few weeks the House wasn't in recess.
Next year, members of the House will be expected in the Capitol for votes each week by 6:30 p.m. Monday and will finish their business about 2 p.m. Friday, Hoyer said.
CNN Headlines Give Credit To Republicans!
Mon Nov 20, 2006 at 11:04:58 AM PDT
Browsing the news stories this morning I found the following headline on the front page of CNN.com.
The headline, "Dems ready to work with GOP on 'middle class squeeze." clearly makes it sound as if the GOP is the party that wants to work on the "Middle Class Squeeze". And the headline makes it sound as if the always congenial Democrats have agreed to work with the GOP on this issue.

N.C. Baptists: God chimes in?
Thu Nov 16, 2006 at 06:46:04 AM PDT
Yesterday I wrote a diary about how the larger North Carolina Baptist Churches were investigating and disassociating from any churches that they suspect are welcoming or accepting of homosexuals.
Today, I get up and see headlines about a tornado touching down in North Carolina...and I can't help but wonder what those baptists would say if our situations were reversed.
N.C. Baptists: Make no mistake, we HATE homosexuals.
Tue Nov 14, 2006 at 09:37:38 PM PDT
Just in case any of you GLBT brothers and sisters out there had an inkling to go out and join a North Carolina Baptist church any time soon, um, please read this diary first.
I admit it...I'm for torture
Thu Nov 02, 2006 at 06:54:48 AM PDT
There has been a lot of discussion lately on the United States government's efforts to get information out of the accused by "water boarding", and using other slightly-over-the-top methods to get the accused to admit their crimes. Previously, I was against it.
Pelosi defends Bush against Chavez

As if Bush needs any help from Democrats, I have just read that [Nancy Pelosi has defended Bush against Chavez .
How will you vote in the Dixie Chicks Referendum?
Tue May 23, 2006 at 02:34:52 PM PDT
Time Magazine, in this week's cover story declared the Dixie Chicks' album release a referendum:
Whether the Dixie Chicks recover their sales luster or not, the choice of single has turned their album release into a referendum. Taking the Long Way's existence is designed to thumb its nose at country's intolerance for ideological hell raising, and buying it or cursing it reveals something about you and your politics--or at least your ability to put a grudge above your listening pleasure. And however you vote, it's tough to deny that by gambling their careers, three Texas women have the biggest balls in American music.

No-So-Pretty Picture of a Troll
Wed Mar 01, 2006 at 03:21:01 PM PDT
I have repeatedly stood up against homophobia that I encounter here on KOS. I have stood up against the insensitive, unliberal, and ignorant use of prison-rape humor, which is really no better than 'rape' humor, something one wouldn't dare present in this forum.
Some people have taken great exception when I have made a stand, while others have expressed appreciation.
One tactic used from time to time to try to quiet me has been to troll-rate 'batches' of comments I make.
OMG! Give us your ports or you're fucked!
Thu Feb 23, 2006 at 07:11:30 PM PDT
This is going to be a short and sweet diary, and it might have been noted in one of the longer and more in depth diaries on the issue...if so, please tell me.
But I can't freaking believe what I read on the front page of CNN.com just now...and really, little they say can surprise me anymore.
Coretta Scott King: Gay Rights Hero
Tue Feb 07, 2006 at 12:18:35 PM PDT
What I remember most about
Coretta Scott King are several small news stories that I read over the years. Probably none of them made front page news outside of the gay rags I picked up weekly in the Oak Lawn neighborhood of Dallas.
Coretta Scott King, a hero of mine, stood up again and again and again and again for the rights of gays and lesbians.
From 1994:
I support this legislation because lesbian and gay people are a permanent part of the American workforce, who currently have no protection from the arbitrary abue of their rights on the job. For too long, our nation has tolerated the insidious form of discrimination against this group of Americans, who have worked as hard as any other group, paid their taxes like everyone else, and yet have been denied equal protection under the law.

CNN.com Frontpage: Powerful Anti-War Story
Tue Oct 25, 2005 at 04:38:57 PM PDT
I check the major news outlets on the web regularly. Rarely does a story make the front page lead that addresses the Iraq War death and destruction as does
this story with the following headline, currently up on
CNN.com:
Guardsman wrote his obit before going to war.
It is an unwelcome, sorrowful number: 2,000. That is the number of U.S. military deaths in Iraq. One of the faces behind that number is James Kinlow. During his 18 years in the Georgia National Guard, Kinlow settled into a peaceful, small-town life focused more on being a citizen than a soldier. Before he deployed to Iraq, he wrote his own obituary.
A flood story that brought home the pain...
Wed Aug 31, 2005 at 02:07:03 PM PDT
While browsing through stories in the MSM about the hurricane and flood I found a few that really touched me. I thought I would share one of them for those of you that haven't shed enough tears over this tradgedy yet today.
Evelyn Turner's partner died because he had lung cancer and they ran out of electricity and oxygen. As if that wasn't enough, she was determined not to leave his body, and she had a hard time getting help in taking her husband to the hospital morgue.

Bush Mentions Gay Party!!
Tue Apr 26, 2005 at 03:05:49 PM PDT
Disclaimer: Okay, I can't stand Drudge anymore than the rest of you...but I do check it occasionally to see what he's on about.
Today, at the top of his page, is a link to one of Drudge's "gossipy" bits that he wrote himself.
The story is about Bush making reference to an annual party that is held in Galveston (near Houston) and in Austin, Texas.
President Bush raised eyebrows on Tuesday when he asked locals in Galveston, Texas: "Do you still have Splash Day?"
"Splash Day" is the annual "adult oriented enormous beach party" celebration on the Gulf Coast.
BUSH: Do you still have Splash Day?
(LAUGHTER)
BUSH: You have to be a baby boomer to know what I'm talking about.
(LAUGHTER)
BUSH: I'm not saying whether I came or not on Splash Day. I'm just saying, Do you have Splash Day?
(LAUGHTER)
Rice on "Irony - World Tour 2005"
Tue Apr 19, 2005 at 09:04:05 AM PDT
This is just too weird for words.
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, starting a two-day trip to Moscow, said on Tuesday the Kremlin's tightening grip on power and Russia's pliant media were "very worrying."
"Trends have not been positive on the democratic side," Rice told reporters on board her plane en route to Moscow, where she was due to meet President Vladimir Putin and other top officials.
And if you were to make a few substitutions to the following, you might think you had read the following on KOS, written as a critique of our current administration:
"The centralization of state power in the presidency at the expense of countervailing institutions like the Duma (parliament lower house) or an independent judiciary is clearly very worrying. The absence of an independent media on the electronic side is clearly very worrying," she added.
"Life", you say? Where the FUCK have you been?
Thu Mar 24, 2005 at 11:35:30 AM PDT
Ugh. I saw the main page on CNN this morning, and the following picture was front and center:

What is it with this lady (and the media for that matter), that she can work up so many emotions for one brain-dead lady, while all of the other death and killing is going on in the world?
Why isn't she at the pentagon protesting all of the soldiers being killed? Why isn't she protesting all of the iraqis that have been and continue to be killed? Why hasn't she protested our government actively torturing and killing people they have "in custody"?
And the tape on her mouth...wouldn't that more appropriately represent the Bush administrations' attempts to silence its critics?
Why isn't she protesting each and every time the death penalty is carried out and funded by the tax dollars she pays?
Bushco: Patriots, Give Us Your Children!
Wed Mar 23, 2005 at 09:28:19 AM PDT
Oh. My. God.
These creeps just won't stop amazing me at the audacity with which they manipulate their followers.
Get this from MSNBC today:
The Army expects to miss its recruiting goals again this month and next, Army Secretary Francis Harvey said Wednesday, and it is developing a new sales pitch that appeals to the patriotism of parents who have been reluctant to steer their children toward the Army.
And this is a bit forboding:
"I'm clearly not going to give up," Harvey said. "At this stage we still have six months to go" before the recruiting year ends Sept. 30. "I've challenged our human resource people to get as innovative as they can. And even as we speak we've got a number of new ideas."
And, in case the first paragraph of the report wasn't clear, we have the following:
One of those is designed to persuade more parents to steer their children to the Army.
"We're going to appeal to patriotism," he said.
The most pathetic thing about it is that you know that the idiots who voted for him will fall for his marketing of death.
