San Francisco Election results

Tue Jun 03, 2008 at 09:54:38 PM PDT

Well, I am happy that Prop 98 is not looking good...and Prop 99 is.

Prop 98 for those who do not know would eliminate rent control across California. For those of us who rent in San Francisco, this is a big deal!

Check other results (as of about 10:00 pm) after the fold....

Pakistan's election; Musharraf is not happy

Tue Feb 19, 2008 at 07:15:36 PM PDT

Very interesting developments going on in Pakistan....

From Bloomberg:

With 258 of 268 contested races decided, the Pakistan Peoples Party had 87 seats in the new legislature and Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League took 66. Another anti-Musharraf group, the Awami National Party, plus smaller groups and independents held enough seats to give Zardari and Sharif a prospect of a two-thirds-strong coalition -- enough to impeach Musharraf and to change the constitution to reduce the president's power.

Pakistan has had it's constitution changed by dictators time and time again. It will be interesting to see what they change this time. Will they strip the President of power that he has given himself? (we kind of need that here now that I think about it.)

And if they impeach Musharraf, who will take his place? This is going to be a bumpy ride....

Gays Living in Shadows of New Iraq

Tue Dec 18, 2007 at 07:25:09 AM PDT

"We thought that with the presence of Americans, life would become paradise, that Iraq would be Westernized," Mohammed said. "But unfortunately the way things were before was so much better than where we are now."

Today in the New York Times Cara Buckley reports on how things have gotten worse for another group of Iraqis since the US occupation. Gays and lesbians in Iraq are being killed and forced into hiding.

Despite the recent reported decrease in violence, life for many Iraqis is an increasing hell.

We can still win in Afghanistan

Sun Nov 25, 2007 at 05:29:09 PM PDT

What do I mean by ‘win’?

I am not using this in strictly a military sense, but I do believe we can do a much better job than is being done today on the military front of this conflict.

We also still have a chance (though it is fading) to win the hearts and minds of the Afghans, as there are still many Afghans who hope we will change strategy and help their nation become more self sufficient. I have never seen such optimism in the face of disaster in my life.

But unless some serious changes are made in the manner the US, NATO and the Afghan government itself are handling things, not only Afghans will live to regret these errors, the world will see another blowback that will leave us all less safe. Just as we saw happen when the world walked away from Afghanistan not long after the Soviets left in 1989.

Fred Phelp's church loses lawsuit

Wed Oct 31, 2007 at 01:48:42 PM PDT

A father of a Marine who's funeral was attacked by the nuts at the Westboro Church in Kansas won $2.9 million in compensatory damages.

I doubt this will be the first lawsuit this obscene church will lose.

Peace Rally San Francisco 10-27 Photo Blog

Sat Oct 27, 2007 at 05:55:46 PM PDT

I attended today's Peace Rally and march here in San Francisco today. I know many think this is a waste of time, but I don't agree. If nothing else it makes me feel I am speaking out, in public, and gives me the chance to be with other like-minded people all protesting to end the Iraq war.

If you continue, you will find many photos I took today in Dolores Park here in San Francisco, where the march ended. It is a beautiful park on the borders of the Castro and Mission districts here in the city. My neighborhood, and I love it and love this city, and the thousands of people, young and old, who came out to show their support of ending this war.

I hope you enjoy the photos, and that you will do something, even to just call your rep in congress and let them know you want our troops home NOW!

Bush appoints birth control foe to run Family Planning budget

Fri Oct 19, 2007 at 09:39:22 AM PDT

You cannot make this stuff up. Bush lives in a different universe than most of the country.

The Bush administration on Monday appointed Susan Orr, former associate commissioner for HHS' Administration for Children and Families, as the acting HHS deputy assistant secretary for the Office of Population Affairs, the Washington Post reports. Orr will administer $283 million in annual family planning grants that provide low-income families and others with contraceptive services, counseling and preventive screenings.

In 2001, Orr, then an official with the Family Research Council, applauded a proposal by President Bush to stop requiring all health insurance plans for federal employees to cover a variety of contraceptives. Orr in 2001 said, "We're quite pleased [with the proposal] because fertility is not a disease."

How Reagan helped Pakistan get nukes

Mon Oct 15, 2007 at 03:19:27 PM PDT

The UK Guardian has an interesting story about a CIA expert (Rich Barlow, an expert on Pakistan's nuclear program) who was the whistle blower exposing how the Reagan administration allowed Pakistan to get nuclear weapons. The next two Bush administrations continued their attacks on this man. As he continued to try to expose the truth.

Rich Barlow had the nerve to discuss how Reagan's administration   actively helped Pakistan gain nuclear weapons. This of course was against all US and International non-proliferation protocols at the time.

But it was politically expedient for them to look the other way, so Pakistan would continue to help us against the Soviets in Afghanistan during the war there during the 1980's.

When I talk to people about the Afghan/Soviet war and mention this Reagan era blowback, I get looks of disbelief. But here is some proof of this claim, and an example of what happens to those who try to expose it...

Women love God by serving husbands

Fri Oct 12, 2007 at 10:50:36 AM PDT

This is not what I believe, (of course being a lesbian has something to do with this view, but even if I were straight there is no way in hell I would go for this).  Evidently in todays Southern Baptist Community, a 1950's 'Father Knows Best' lifestyle is imperative for women to accept.

From the LA Times:

Fort Worth, Texas - Equal but different.

You hear that a lot on the lush green campus of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

God values men and women equally, any student here will tell you. It's just that he's given them different responsibilities in life: Men make decisions. Women make dinner.

Taliban Gone Wild

Sat Sep 22, 2007 at 04:08:21 PM PDT

I have this book, I picked it up at a funky shop here in the Mission district in San Francisco.
I have also been to Afghanistan.

Most of us associate the Taliban with men who's fundamentalism and hate for women is obscene. That is true in my opinion, but there is a lot about the Taliban that most people do not know.

This video tells a bit more of their story, I wanted to embed this as a video, but it did not work.

But this is something you have to see to believe:

Radio hosts exempt from campaign finance laws

Mon Apr 30, 2007 at 06:43:49 PM PDT

The Washington state Supreme Court ruled 9-0 that radio talk show hosts do not have to report advocacy for a political referendum (or I assume candidate) as an in-kind donation, overturning a lower court decision.

The court said:

"Under the PDC's regulation, the media exemption applies to coverage of a candidate or ballot measure that occurs during the 'content' period of a broadcast, as opposed to the commercial advertising period, when payment is normally required," Justice Barbara Madsen wrote for the court. "However, the mere fact that a broadcast has value to a campaign, or includes solicitation of funds, votes, or other support, does not convert 'commentary' into 'advertising' when it occurs during the content portion of a broadcast for which payment is not normally required."

I found out about while checking in to see what the Freepers were up to today, they seemed to think this was a huge conservative win, (I suppose because the radio guys were conservative) without considering that this applies to liberals too!

By the way, this is my first diary, so please be gentle...

I looked and do not think it was posted here yet. If I missed it, sorry!
