Anthropogenic global warming: Fact or Fiction?

Fri Feb 23, 2007 at 06:07:18 PM PDT

This article was recently published in the Bowdoin College newspaper. Bowdoin is one of the most environmentally friendly campuses in the United States, yet the co-chairman of the Bowdoin College Republicans is still publishing gems like this:

The planet is warming. This is a fact...The second issue is the more controversial one: Humans are the cause of global warming, through our pollution of the environment. Since the second industrial revolution in the late 19th century, humans have been pumping gases into the atmosphere. In the past 30 years, the earth has become warmer. But correlation does not mean causation.

The Morality of Gay Marriage

Fri Feb 02, 2007 at 01:43:21 PM PDT

(Note: I wrote this as part of a Student Voice Column about a year after gay marriage was legalized in Massachusetts, where I'm from. I'm reposting it now to see what people think, specifically of the Torah-based arguments as well as the idea that civil unions weaken the sanctity of marriage. (I'm not proposing we get rid of civil unions, though; for now they're all we've got.)

On November 2nd, moral values were the most important issue by Bush voters; coincidentally, bans on gay marriage were passed by double-digit majorities in eleven states, nine of which went for Bush. To some, this implies that “blue states” are cesspits of morality, as if bordering on water causes depravity and sin. The religious right is calling to protect the “sanctity of marriage,” but in a country where half of all marriages end in divorce, couples can be married by an Elvis impersonator, and Star Jones’s wedding is sponsored by Wal-Mart and Budweiser, it seems reasonable to say that gay marriage is not really the biggest threat to morality. Those who think gay marriage is immoral have been misled by those who are disturbed by thought of homosexuality.

Looking for Advice on Dealing with "Wingnuts?"

Tue Jan 30, 2007 at 06:16:10 AM PDT

As a member of Students for Barack Obama, I have a Google News Alert that I get each day with what the MSM and blogosphere is saying about him. This morning, I saw Liberal Juan Williams Agrees With Schlussel on Obama Muslim Background. It sounded intriguing, so I decided to check it out and see what the newest development in the Obama madrassa smear was.

The blog post had a short quote from Fox commentator Juan Williams: "He comes from a father who was a Muslim. I mean, I think that given we're at war with Muslim extremists, that presents a problem."

I'm sure those of you who are familiar with this guy can tell me that he's not really liberal, even if he is employed by what some people like to call the National Proletariat Radio. But I'm not interested in that, because most of the article was about an article by Bill Sammon in the Washington Examiner, with Debbie's own lucid additions (with the "DS"):

Wishful Thinking: Obama/Edwards 2008

Mon Jan 01, 2007 at 11:34:22 PM PDT

2008 buzz is inevitable, but what I've found is the worst part is that it leads to speculation by people who wishfully ignore political reality.

These are the people who supported John Kerry from the very beginning. Yes, the rest of the Democratic voters reluctantly got behind him after it was clear he was going to win the nomination, but let's recap. John Kerry, a Massachusetts liberal with absolutely no charisma or ability to relate to the trials of the majority of the people in America. This is not a smeared perception of him because of the MSM; this is what the man is really like. And some Democrats thought that once the American people "understood" what he was "all about," he could start picking the drapes out for the Oval Office.

Two years later, this problem of wishful thinking has not gone away.
