The Newt seems to be sentient.  He is warning the GOP that the Republican brand has simply lost the trust of the American people and can expect massive losses unless something drastic is done.

What he suggests as a cure seems to be same-o/same-o.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) is calling on Republicans to seek "real change to avoid a real disaster" in the wake of another Democratic victory in a special election on Saturday.

In a letter to House Republicans posted on www.newt.org, Gingrich urges House leaders to call an "emergency meeting" of House Republicans to address what he describes as a "catastrophic collapse of trust in Republicans."

This is live on FOX and he just had a rousing introduction at the NAACP Dinner.  It appears that FOX will air Wright's entire speech.

Barack Obama has been tied to dangerous bomb throwing radical (?) William Ayers because Obama and Ayers were on the same charity board for several years.  Now, mind you, no one is questioning Barack's patriotism, or whether Barack is himself a dangerous (black) bomb throwing radical.  All folks are saying is they just need some "answers" because of Barack's "associations."

OK.  Fine by me.

Stephanopoulos apparently is feeling the heat and was interviewed by Michael Calderone over at Politico.  It seems that George just thinks this is part of the game and that last night's debate is "what people want to hear."

This kind of crap will continue, until we make it clear to the MSM that we want some substance, rather than shiny flag pins and gotcha moments.

I'm not sure if it's really "news" at all, but these are the talking points that ABC will be relying on to get through their own self-created storm.

Tonight we witnessed what, I believe, will become one of the classics of gotcha "debate."  Tonight's debate will be replayed, or referenced, much like the Nixon/Kennedy debates, with Nixon's sweaty lip.  Not because of its substance (precious little of that), but because, after 20 debates, and after spending thousands of hours of air time on Rev. Wright, etc., over the last several weeks, ABC chose to spend the first 45 minutes of the debate on gag reflex lizard brain issues, rather than try to educate the citizenry about the candidate's relative positions on health care, economics, the environment, etc.

So?

I think this plays out OK for Barack.  Here's how.

There's been a lot of discussion about McCain's "promise" of 100 years of war in Iraq.  

What did he mean by his comment?  Was he saying the Iraq war will go on for 100 years?  Or, did he simply mean that we are likely to have a "presence" in Iraq for 100 years (as he is now explaining), like we could well end up having in Korea, etc.

My own take on this?  I think we are making a mistake if we try to convince the American people that McCain wants 100 years of war.  But, there are bigger fish to fry here...

You've all got conservative friends, right?  Right?  Well, I live in Oklahoma, so I've got quite a few.  I am the token "Liberal Democrat" friend for most of them.

When the Jeremiah Wright controversy hit, I got quite a few people smugly asking me, "So, how are you going to vote now, huh?  McCain's looking pretty good now."

I've responded in various ways.  I've emailed links to Wright's full sermons and embarrassed a few of them into listening "in context."  I've had conversations about the prophetic voice (or lack thereof) in the Church, and what it means to be "patriotic."  But this is a region heavily influenced by Sean Hannity, et. al., so attention spans are not all that long.

So I developed my own quick response.  It has the virtue of being easy to memorize.  It also pushes the question back in their face:  why do you want four more years?  Check this out:
