Iraq: McCain’s attempt to co-opt Obama’s position

Sun Jul 06, 2008 at 09:02:10 AM PDT

Last week, I observed with incredulous disbelief as the mainstream American media asserted that Obama had flipped on Iraq and essentially created an opening to manoeuvre on his numerously stated position that upon being sworn in, he will stipulate to his Joint Chiefs of Staff that they have a new mission in Iraq – which is ending the war and bringing American forces home. Apparently, this confusion was created by the statement that Obama made in an interview in which he stated that he would continue to "refine" his position on Iraq as dictated by the facts on the ground when he eventually travels to Iraq sometime this month. It wasn’t long after he made this statement that the depraved hyenas pounced, like a herd of starving carnivores in an African Serengeti.

William Kristol’s Article: An Exercise in Idiocy

Sun Jun 22, 2008 at 08:57:12 AM PDT

If one wants to observe partisan creatures in their functional element, all one needs to do is watch Fox News and observe William Kristol attempt to stretch arguments beyond the point of common sense. And as usual, he has not disappointed in his latest article afflicted upon us via the Weekly Standard. Before even considering the arguments he makes, the fundamental truths are as follows: the decision to invade Iraq was a colossal blunder – it has strengthened Iran, inflamed anti-West sentiment in the Middle East and Muslim world like never before and is one of the empiric factors responsible for the present turmoil the global economy is going through. Secondly, the operational mechanism of any robust legal system is sufficient to deal any sort of delinquency, be it pedophilia or terrorism. I would expand on these points subsequently.

Why Clinton Lost

Sun Jun 08, 2008 at 08:40:05 AM PDT

When I joined this site, I was a soft Barack Obama supporter but as the campaign progressed, my support for Obama solidified as his appeal grew. As a foreign national who types from a semi-detached in a suburb in England, I obviously cannot comment about the on-the-ground mechanics of the Obama and Clinton organisations, but I would attempt to examine the message, the candidates and other corollaries as I have seen it from over 3,000 miles away. In doing so, I highlight what I think to be the three principal factors responsible for Hillary Clinton’s loss.

What’s all this hullaballoo about voting for McCain?

Sun Jun 01, 2008 at 11:43:01 AM PDT

This diary is going to be quite short. I am still baffled by the reaction of some Clinton people to the resolution reached yesterday with regard to the Florida and Michigan situation. The reality that was clear in the run up to the committee meeting was that the members of the committee would have been indescribably crazy to have made any decision that would or could be seen as unduly advantaging one candidate over the other. Indeed, any decision they were going to take could not materially impact the outcome of the nomination as it would be viewed as transparently unfair. So this was always going to be how it would be resolved. This was readily apparent. Hence my surprise at the hullaballoo coming from the Clintononian side of the aisle that McCain is their new man.

The Moral Bankruptcy of the Clintons

The "assassination" statement by Senator Clinton and her subsequent refusal to recognise the volatility of this statement reveals a deep moral chasm; more below the jump.

The Clintons: A Greek Tragedy

Thu Apr 24, 2008 at 04:46:51 AM PDT

There is an elemental shift occurring in American politics and the Clintons could have helped birth it. Instead they are seeking to stifle it for selfish reasons. It is unforgivable. It is a travesty. It goes against everything they have ever stood for. Of course, they do not care – the thirst for power dwarfs all other feelings, even sensible considerations. Years from now, when this story is told, it would be told like a classic Greek tragedy, a situation that need not have occurred.

For the Democratic Party, the tone the race is taking is a recipe for electoral calamity not just in November, but for future electoral prospects.

One can argue for or against the candidacy of Barack Obama substantively. But there are some things you cannot sensibly put forward as to why he shouldn’t be the Democratic nominee.
