As people continue to talk about close the nomination race is, there's a though experiement worth performing. What if FDR and JFK were running against each other for the Democratic nomination? Construct an image of that primary campaign set in the present time, with charges and counter-charges, going on for months. Or, instead, Lincoln versus Washington (with necessary party & process adjustment), or even Bill Clinton versus JFK.
The clash of demographics, scandals, oratory styles, and perhaps a few ideas would probably continue for months without a decisive resolution. In each imaginary pairing, there are two undoubtedly accomplished presidents and politicians, and it seems quite likely that neither one could defeat his opponent decisively.
